Radiohead's Camera-Free, Laser-Made Music Video Hits the Web, Lets You Manipulate it in Real Time
Posted by Adam Frucci at 3:53 AM on July 15, 2008
The Radiohead video for "House of Cards" that used no cameras or lights, only fancy lasers, just hit the web, and it's just as crazy and trippy as the screenshots suggested. Above, check out the video, while after the jump you'll find another video that details just how it was made. Did I mention that because this video is pure data instead of images you can manipulate it in real time using a visualiser? Because you can.
Also be sure to check out the awesome visualiser, which lets you manipulate the data to adjust the image and rotate around the objects in real-time. The most fun time waster you'll find all week, guaranteed. [Radiohead]

Used to love Radiohead. But their music has become completely boring. Neat concept for a video though.

@Fantomas1010: Three little things you might want to be aware of.
1) Double-posting is bad form unless absolutely necessary (or absolutely hilarious or absolutely an accident.)
2) "First" will get you banned in these parts. (It may be too late for you.)
3) If you are going to say First at least a) spell it out, b) do it with some conviction!, c) actually be first.

I'm a huge fan of Radiohead, but there's a certain coldness to this video, almost as if it was pulled off by a bunch of computer technicians...
Extremely cool idea though.

Looks great, back to what music videos were in the 90's short experimental films set to music and lyrical themes.

I'm not in the mood for that kind of music right now, but that was a very neat video. The real time manipulation is pretty cool too.

I like how radiohead is like "Hey. We're gonna do this. We don't care what you think" and then they do it. And then they'll just do something else three years down the road that will be absolutely and completely different, but still will cease to care what I, you, or anyone else has to say about it.
Pretty much the Macaulay Culkin of the music biz, minus the bad parents.

My respect for Radiohead and NIN has shot through the roof recently, with all the experimentation they've been doing with their releases, and not just musically.
Kudos, guys.

It's kinda messy, and the song isn't that very good.
The 'Making Of' was more interesting for me. Perhaps real humans are better...

@ninjagin:
It's a technology called LIDAR. Nothing new, we use it in civil engineering for such basic tasks as creating a 3D road profile by attaching the LIDAR to the front of a van and driving down the street with it.
But to make a video using it is just cool, and as a long-time radiohead fan, I'm not at all surprised that they would do this.

It suits In Rainbows quite a bit.
a) It's experimental and even if it has been done before, they will get all the cred.
b) They will never do it again.
It's pretty sweet even though it seems all the worst songs on In Rainbows are becoming singles.

This song isn't really that bad, but the video reminds me of The Lawnmower Man, if it were a made for TV special.
I wish that I could get into Radiohead, but overall I just can't. I don't know what it is, i've tried many times.

@anti-hello-kitty: Oh my god dude. Are you serious? You don't even have to like them to know that they've been artistic pioneers for a LONG time. Poetic lyrics, visual art, a history of branching into new styles just to keep themselves fresh...
Don't hate what you don't know. Obviously you don't know Radiohead.

Here's an interesting seemingly home-made Radiohead video I found that seems to use audio to drive some 3D characters. A bit repetitive, but somehow hypnotic at the same time:
+ Watch video
I think the song in this video is also from "In Rainbows."

The video was very cool -- with the sound turned all the way down!
Dr. David Thorpe said it perfectly...
"Radiohead is the sort of dopily dissonant, synth-mashing, warbling, British crap that passes for cutting edge these days. Their Internet fans are legion, their pretentious and egotistically dull albums continue to sell, and the people who malign the good name of critics by calling themselves as much incessantly drool over Radiohead like they've got platinum bars shooting out of their jocks."

"used no cameras or lights"? Except for the laser (which is a light) and LIDAR sensor, essentially a one-pixel camera. Instead of bathing the whole scene in light and capturing all the pixels at once, it captures the image one pixel at a time, scanning the light across the scene. As a bonus, you get depth information as well, hence the ability to manipulate the image in 3D.
