PS3 Gets Video Store and Rentals Tonight
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 5:33 AM on July 16, 2008
Unveiling the new Home, Sony revealed that video rentals and purchases are finally coming to the PS3. Video will be fully integrated into the PlayStation Store, which will have a new video section. And you can transfer them to your PSP via USB, and have them on multiple devices at once! Standard and high def, with rentals running US$3-US$6 and US$10-US$15 for purchases. It takes about an hour to download a two-hour movie. Most of the major studios are on board (Kotaku has a partial list in their liveblog), and it goes live tonight!

Heard it was coming to Oz and infact should already be here. It's competitors are up and running so it had better hurry up! Looking very forward to it though. I've tried the competition and love the ease and choice the service offers.

So my biggest complaint of every major implementation of something like this is that I want to be able to rent *everything.* I'm never going to *buy* DRM-filled movies or TV shows that's going to be tied to a proprietary box, be it a PS3, XBox or even an Apple TV.
This is my biggest beef with XBL Marketplace, where I need to buy each TV show episode. I understand that Netflix + XBox may mitigate that to a degree - it depends on what they make available - but it's still a sticking point nonetheless.
On the PS3, will EVERY item available for purchase also be available to merely rent?

@robinandtami: Yes, the XBox marketplace is free access where you can download SD or HD movies. But for the Netflix offering, I think you need Silver or Gold, right? ($5/month plus the Netflix account fee) And I'm pretty sure if you want to watch in a party with friends, each friend also needs a Netflix account. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Lame.. I never use amazon unbox on my tivo because the $3.99 rental price point is not worth it over netflix physically sending me a disk. $1.99 is when I start to pay attention.. and now that xbox has netflix streaming, AND final fantasy ... what is sony doing to keep me ?

Great! I've been looking forward to this. Xbox has had hundreds of SD and HD movie rentals for quite a while now. Its good to see PlayStation finally almost catching up.

@atomo: You don't have to pay a subscription fee to access the Marketplace.
Have they said what resolutions will be available? If 1080P is available, I will start using my PS3 for this service. If not, I'll keep using my 360 for this, like I have for over two years now. However, still hyped about Netflix streaming on the 360 that you can watch in a party with friends!

Seriously, there's some of you that think paying $5.99 for ONE HD movie is anything but absolute crap? And having to wait for who knows how long to get it? The 1 hour to get is for SD, NOT HD. So you're going to wait for 3 hours to get a movie for $6 you could have driven to the video store and got for $4 in 15 minutes (give or take)? Hell I've already got comcast on-demand that gives me the same raping.
I would much rather pay anyone but sony $15/month for unlimited. Hell $20 even. I watch more than 3 movies a month.

What I am curious about is what the quality of this so called "HD" content is going to be.... bit rates and such, and wether it's at least Dolby Digital quality or not.
I am not cancelling my blockbuster membership yet .. and probably not for the next half a decade :)

Do you actually have to wait until it's completely downloaded before you can watch it? If it can download in an hour, it seems like it would be sufficiently buffered for viewing in a couple minutes.

Apparently Sony and Apple both missed the memo that "rentals" are for a fight that ended years ago. It is a step in the right direction, but until it becomes an "all you can eat per month" deal, it seems like a concept that can only go as far as the Apple TV has gone. Microsoft certainly has the right idea teaming up with NetFlix to do streaming of movies, even if they need to address the quality and lack of new titles issue.

@atomo: Moronic subscription fee? With gold subscription and minimum subscription to get streaming Netflix you are looking at under $158. That is UNLIMITED STREAMING plus as many movies as you want physically delivered to your home one at a time.
With PSN if you averaged only one (100 min. or less) movie a week in SD for a year you'll be paying under $156. So you get 52 (limited) rentals a year from PSN for about the same price as unlimited rentals from XBL/Netflix.
Yep. MS continues to rape their customers.

Way to hedge your bets Sony, win the HD movie disc race, then offer the best streaming options too. Buck up MS, at least you have Halo 9 to look forward to, plus you get to pay to play online.

@wills916: You can start watching once the download has started just like everything you download via the PSN. I presume to upload to your psp however you may need to download it completely.
I cant put netflix flics on my psp, nor are they delivered within 1 hour when I send out my most recently watched err "screened" movier err "film".

This sounds literally no different from what MS has been offering since I don't know when. Now MS is offering Netflix IN ADDITION to the existing rental service. Tell me how Sony has trumped MS here. The prices aren't even better.

You're right, it is no different. You just have more options, and have had the ability to do what sony is offering for over a year now. There's over 400 movies avaiable to rent on the xbox right now, with I'm guessing AT LEAST half of them are in HD, I wouldn't be suprised if about 3/4 of them are available in HD. I would like to purchase them though...if I can purchase HD movies on a PS3 I may actually considering buying it, even if for the movie purchase possibilities, and maybe resistence 2...

You tools, you don't have to have netflix on the 360 to watch movies, that's just a new option for netflix subscribers if they so choose to use it. The 360 has been streaming HD movies for a while now, its nothing new. Sony is just way behind the curve. I am excited about the ability to puchase movies though (not a PieceShit3 owner). I'm tired of renting. And HD movies on the 360 buffer and are ready to watch in just minutes (sometimes).

You tools, you don't have to have netflix to download and watch movies in SD or HD on the Xbox. The 360 has been doing movies downloads in HD (with buffering) for a very long time. Netflix support is just so you have the OPTION to use that service through your xbox, but it is by far not the first or only option. The biggest thing I'm excited about (not a PiceShit3 owner) is the movie PURCHASES, I would like to own the movie and keep it on my hard drive as opposed to only renting it. Any one have any clarification on the purchasing options, HD Movie purchases?

@powerball:
Fanboy much? How are Sony's streaming optiond better than Microsoft? You could have at least outlined why.
Sorry, as of the Fall Dashboard Update, Microsoft will have more streaming options than Sony. Simple fact. I applaud Sony for jumping on the streaming bandwagon, but let's be real here.
*** THE REAL ISSUE ***
However, now that so many more people will be streaming, how long before the Internet Service Providers start screwing people and capping downloads per month. You know it's coming. I only hope Sony and MS have the balls to team up and fight the big ISPs on this.

I don't have a PS3 or 360 (yet), but if I had to make a choice right now, based on the info presented at E3 it would be 360 all the way. I've been using the Roku box for streaming Netflix content and it's been worth every penny. Sure the selection is o.k. at best, but it's unlimited and free (I already had a Netflix account, so I'm paying no more to use the service).
To me the prices of the movie download on xbox and PS3 are way too high. I could see me using it once in a while if nothing good was on, other than that it's just too expensive.

I wonder if the XBOX360 uses Columbia Pictures stuff, since Sony owns Columbia. There's no doubt that Sony will use Columbia for the PS3 video rentals, though. But hey, since nobody actually owns a PS3, the downloads will be pretty fast!

@sbrown23: Capping downloads, hell I'm in the middle of Time Warner cable's capped download test market. My 2.1 Mbs DSL connection will stream HULU SD content just fine to my iMac but HD content from HULU is unwatchable due to buffering. PS3 streamed SD content is a unwatchable due buffering, tried this evening and to cap it off (pun intended) AT&T is rumbling about capping downloads as well. Sucks to be me right now. I need cable's speed at DSL pricing with no caps!
