PLX Kiwi Saves You Gas By Teaching You Not To Drive NASCAR Style
Posted by Jason Chen at 3:39 AM on July 3, 2008
PLX Kiwi, as seen above, is a plug-in device that analyses how you drive and teaches you how to do it in the most gas-efficient way possible. Although you could easily accomplish the same thing by yourself after reading some tips online--Kiwi says you get about 20-33% improvement in your fuel efficiency--it's easier to have something always there reminding you to not gas so hard or drive so fast or brake so much. There's also "challenges" that teach you how to do this, which could be a fun distraction when you're driving along a long stretch of highway. On the other hand, the Kiwi has a MSRP of US$299, which takes a bit of savings to earn back. [PLXDevices]

I learned how to not drive NASCAR style by making a right-hand turn once.

Wow, I can spend $300 to have some new device tell me how to hypermile when I can use the BAREST MINIMUM OF INTELLIGENCE and do that for free with my f-ing brain.
Don't get me wrong, computers are nice and all, but I also don't need a computer to help me figure out what direction is up.

Good to have some modern design competition for the 1980 style Scangauge II that sorta does the same thing.

BUT does kiwi teach you how to avoid friekin accidents when your focusing on the screen to see if you passed the challenges or if you stare at it to see if you can perfect your acceleration skills...directly into the car in front of you.
sounds cool and all, but why can't we use cell phones again? =P

So you guys are saying that driving in a circle for hours is not the most efficient way to drive a car?;) There is a style of driving called Hypermiling that allows people to get some cray millage but involves costing with the engine off etc.

Mom Keeps You Healthy by Making you Eat your Vegetables.
"Mom is a 'not that plugged in' device that analyzes how you eat and teaches you how to do it in the healthiest way possible. Although you could easily accomplish the same thing by yourself after reading some tips online-Mom says you'll be strong like Popeye and smart like Einstein!-it's easier to have someone always there reminding you to not eat so much candy or gorge on pizza or stuff your face with cheesy-poofs. There's also "butter" that helps you do this, which could be a fun distraction when you're working your way through that plate of broccoli. On the other hand, Mom will totally stop giving a shit when you destroy her trust by stealing that $299 she had saved up for something special and go spend it on cheap blow, which will take a bit of savings to earn back."

My new(to me) car has real time feedback gauge on MPG usage. It was driving me insane I think, so now I just tune it out and get bad gas mileage.

@nutbastard: It's a steak house that predominates the podunk towns of Texas.
I forgot this isn't the Regional Wide Web -- it's WORLD Wide.

@nutbastard: My Honda gets terrible gas mileage -- but that's probably because I've been towing a K-Bobs bull statue for the past three years when I decided to steal it during a drive through Lubbock.

My hybrid gives me a lot of this kind of info in real time as well. It actually does help your mindset while driving. I tend to coast to stops more than I used to. (Oh how I miss slamming on the breaks at the last second.)

cruise control? set at the speed limit? on the freeway?
like you need a machine to teach you that.

@godwhacker:
and cruise control will net you WORSE mileage if you are in a hilly area, since it will accelerate hard on the uphills.

$300 is pricey, but given that this is also an LCD-equipped ODBII scan tool with a real-time MPG readout, it's not bad at all.
I've occasionally wished my car had a real-time MPG readout, instead of just the trip meter, and I could use a scan tool. I might be the market for this.

Great! Now we can pretend we are playing a video game while driving. If we crash we can just cancel and start over. LOL
Seriously, I really don't see the good in having drivers watch the screen while driving so they can see if they have beat the challenge. Good for gas saving but you will be spending all that and more to your insurance company. Seems like a great idea but there must be a better interface so that drivers can keep their eyes and mind on the road.

I think it is a great device, the average driver doesn't know enough about the way their vehicle works to monitor their own driving in a super efficient manner. When people have a device right there that they can analyze during and at the end of each trip it will help them improve there driving. All in all I think this company has come up with something that can help the consumer save money and benefit the environment. There are hundreds of products out there that help people do things they could do on their own i.e. nicorrette, weight loss pills, etc... When the information is available to you it becomes harder to ignore. With gases prices the way they are people are looking for something like this to help them save.

I've looked on the website and I think that it is a great idea. The average person does not realize how much their driving style affects their MPG and the environment. Also, the check engine feature is really convenient-I have taken my car in countless times and wasted time & money when all the only thing wrong with my car was not screwing the gas cap on tight enough! While most people do understand simple gas wasters like hard acceleration having this information available in front of you holds you acocuntable for your driving and makes it easier to make simple changes when you see that you can save money! We cannot control the gas prices we can only control the way we drive. Go Kiwi!
