Plexidor is Automatic Star Trek-Like Door for Your Pets (and Only Yours)
Posted by Kit Eaton at 6:31 PM on July 28, 2008
Now, if this door makes the classic Pphssshshm Star Trek door noise when it opens and shuts, the manufacturers are onto a winner. It sounds like a neat solution for dogs and cats that like to roam: you pop a weatherproof RFID tag in their collar, and when they approach the Plexidor pet door it automatically slides up to let your pets in or out. Its safety mechanism means it won't guillotine your pet if they dawdle, and it shuts automatically so you only get your animals in your home. It's made of the same stuff as football helmets, so it should withstand some tough weather, and it's available now for between US$130 and US$800, depending on features and size. [Electronic House]

I know people that used the doggie door to get back into the house after they go locked out. I think there was alcohol involved.
I wonder how quickly it opens up... my dogs tend to go through the doggie door at full speed...

I wonder if I could fit through the large sized one... that would make so many things much easier.

Screw RFID, I want it to open and close when I make the door noise, like in Airplane:2.

My cats have lost so many collars (and rabies/ID tags). Could we just inject the RFID chip under their skin, like vets do with ID chips for cats and dogs?

!!!Warning: An ill-timed power surge may lead to decapitation. To avoid this please choose the $800 model!!!

What an awesome idea. They say that the best way to keep your dog from getting stung to death (by killer bees for my brethren in the southern US) is to install a doggie door. That one looks like it would be quite effective in sealing out bees.

@skiterr:
yuo mine go thru the door at full speed as well, if it did work as advertised, it would save some coins on the heating bills in the winter.

This is cool, but look at the size of the thing!!! There is no way I would want to look at that monstrosity on my door. It looks like they even had to relocate the peephole to the side of the pet-door.

There is another doggie-door that works on the same principle, with one big exception-
the other design simply swings from a hinge on top and has a latch mechanism activated by a collar tag.
I think it's meant for smaller dogs, but seems more user friendly as the dog can run at it full-speed without having to wait for it to open, it just unlatches.

my friend tried to use one of these things as a creative solution to a cat problem. he had one huge cat and one small cat, and the large one would always steal the food of the smaller one. so he thought he'd be clever and install one of these doors on a kitty carrier and put the smaller cat's food inside. the big cat wouldn't have the rfid tag, so it couldn't get to the food right? not quite. the big cat hid nearby and when the small cat came close enough to trigger the door, it would sprint up, bodycheck the small one out of the way and go inside to eat the food. i love how technology always does what we say, and not what we mean :)
