PlayStation Video Store Open For Business
Posted by Mark Wilson at 3:06 PM on July 16, 2008
As promised in a press conference not 24 hours ago, Sony's PlayStation video store is up and running. And the best news? It doesn't even require a firmware update. Just click the new "video" button in the PS Store and make your way to cool studio pages like this one pictured from Lionsgate.
AU: Obviously this is US only.

A new release/feature from a company and the servers didn't crash? Impossible, is somebody actually on top of things? Memories of Firefox 3 and the Iphone 3g server troubles will forever make me cautious about new rollouts.

Anyone got word of if the non-rental movies are DRM ridden?
Do they work on a PC or non-Sony PMD.

Nope, no video button anywhere. Its a US account, but in Japan. Must be filtered via geolocation (ip address)

@kiwizz: No 'Video' button on the top left? You're using a US account?
@shake_n_bake: I don't think they're actual 1080p HD. The size would be too big and it would take away from their BD sales.
@chefsami: Yes, it's US only. I have had someone tell me they downloaded a video onto their European PS3 via a US account, but the video wouldn't play. Don't know if they figured out the solution/problem yet.

I am guessing these HD downloads do not have the same audio quality such as TrueHD and DTS-HD-MA that blu ray discs have?

I see that the 'top downloads' are unpopulated... not surprising since even 2.99 for 8 year old movies, and + $1 or $2 more for the 'HD' version is pretty high.
I would rather spend the cost of 2 hd movies and get unlimited blue ray / dvd movies from netflix in physical form. If only they offered a download service like the 360 ...
I LOVE video downloads, but I want to watch movies on a whim, or see it easily.. NOT get nickel & dimed.

This is a great update to the store. I love the way PS3 and xbox360 fight it out. It just means faster innvoation pushed out to consumers.
My question is: Are you able to rent HD movies that are not released on Blu-Ray? That would be great!
Did anyone see the catalog of movies yet? Is it large?

Really stop bitching about this..
Sure netflix is good.. if you want to pay a monthly fee.
Sometimes I just want to watch 1 or 2 movies.. that's it!
$3 isn't a bad price @ all.. its less then I'd pay @ blockbuster and again no monthly contract.
Also - the movies start playing within a 1 to 2 min of downloading - then continue to dl as you watch.
not to mention Sony is still providing access to all its servers for... here's the kicker... FREE..
compare that to having to pay for a 360 subscription..
Really.. quit your whining and just be happy w/ it.. if its not exactly what you want.. don't use it and hope they come out w/ someone changes (which of course they will)

Question for those who have downloaded something: stereo or 5.1?
I gave the store a cursory look over this morning and the HD movies were all pretty much around the 7.5 to 8 gig range, so my hopes for 5.1 are pretty slim. Honestly though, $6 for an HD rental with a stereo mix just isn't worth it.

I will complain, because we are being led to believe that this is the best it will get. I'm not sure what the PS3 / Xbox policy is yet, but I'm sure the unbox policy of a 24 hour timer to watch once you hit play, and a 5 to 30 day window in which to even watch is the norm.
Once the catalog gets bigger, and you are watching more then 2 or 3 movies a month since its so easy, then you'll feel the sting of the outrageous price.
Has anyone even seen the quality of the SD? Its pretty unwatchable via unbox on a HD set.

can giz do a side by side on downloading movies between xbox and ps3? It might even include other devices that do the same? Perhaps look at which is the better at all kinds of media, like music, demos, previews, and user content.
powerball
chefsami
Posted 2:25 AM 17/7/08
@powerball: that would be really cool compare the two in terms of a media device not a gaming device. Sony would have the a lead to start with the BD player.

@dj_sid: @PlayerX: yeah am in canada also and having the same issue, but I dont see why not though, movies are released at the same time both in canada and the US, I understand with tv shows because of distribution rights and all. Furthermore I thought we had a North American account not a specific Canadian account.

You can rent videos hd or sd but they only last 14 days if not played or 24 hours after you play them for the first time so if you rent tonight and play tonight you will not have the rental tomorrow night this same time.
Purchased releases can be played unlimited amount of times on the system they were purchased for (the PSN account logged in at the time). You cannot swap PSN accounts to play the movie.
You can transfer rented content directly to a PSP via download from a PC or PS3 but once it is on the PSP it cannot be played on the PS3 after the transfer is done.
Purchased content can be transfered to the PSP (up to 3 registered PSP's)
HD movies are in 1080p

Btw, I didn't have the video button either. In the US, but a quick restart brought it up. Flush the cache i guess.

@shake_n_bake: Movies can be rented in High Def (no explanation to resolution), but can only be purchased in SD, TV shows are strangely missing HD versions completely so far.

@lilaliendog: Have you rented a movie and checked the properties yet to be sure it's 1080P? as I stated in my post to Shake_n_Bake Sony pulled a bait and switch with the anime Xam'd, put the trailer in 1080P and the actual rental was 720P.

@shake_n_bake: you asked if it's 1080P well I just rented Xam'd the exclusive PSN anime that said it was HD, the trailer was 1080P, but the actual rental was 720P! Sony is playing games again.

I checked it out last night before going to bed and I have to say the selection is a mixed bag, or a 'meh' at best... I'll keep it in mind the next time I want to rent something from Blockbuster (yeah, I still use the ole local blockbuster), but other than that the prices seem a bit prohibitive considering the movie offerings the site has available for download and rental...

As much as I hate to say it, it looks like I might ditch my PS3 for an XBOX. Netflix wins it over for me. I don't want to have to pay for another rental when I already have a rental service. I never watch Blu-Ray anymore.

Nice to hear they've finally got things rolling smoothly.. in the US, at least.
I hate to sound bitter (Someone say dark chocolate?) but one would think that if anyone could get a Euro-American rollout working correctly, it'd be Sony, with its own studio to take a lead and release titles outside of the US on its own network.
But hey, you can't win 'em all, right?
