PlayStation 3 Firmware 2.4 in Photographs
Posted by Mark Wilson at 12:45 AM on July 1, 2008
We've already seen two videos of Sony's latest 2.4 firmware for the PS3 (that hits July 2nd, incidentally), but sometimes the story is easily told in good old fashioned photography. So here are some direct feed shots of the new firmware, including plenty of material on the new achievements trophies. There's nothing jaw-dropping going on here, but the integration looks simple and clean. And that's certainly worth something. [GameLife and PS3Fanboy via Kotaku]

@SilenceisGolden: I'd hardly say the 360's online gaming is untouchable as the PS3 has really improved in that (I didnt say it was better, I just said that the 360's is the end all be all of online gaming). And online gaming is really all the 360 has going for it. We all know the issues it had with overheating/RRoD whilst the PS3 is rock solid reliable. Not to mention the PS3's Blu-ray capability is "untouchable". And now with achievements and in game XMB, the PS3 is easily ahead of the Xbox 360.
Cue PS3 vs. 360 fight.......now

Consoles in my home by average playtime
PC > 360 > Wii > DS > PS3
just saying, Sony should work on other things beyond their "cool" interface - they seem like they may be on the right track to getting things right, but it sure is taking them a loooooong time.

@SigmundTheSeaMonster: You are right. PS3 (Piece of Shit 3) does have a better interface. It also has web browsing, etc.. Xbox online game play is untouchable, but THATS IT. Thats what really gets me.. I have all the systems out right now. I play Xbox the most, but in my mind think why oh why.

yeah.. i love my 360.. but the sony bar is much better... of course, there is no room for advertising like on the 360..
the gamerscore should still give you something.. like after 10k points.. you should get a free game download.. i dont care about the achievements now that i know they do nothing for you

(not to irk 360-fanboys) but I must say, Sony's navigation and interface leave the 360 in its dust. It's just snappier, friendlier and logical in layout. (yeah, the piss-line load is rather slow...)
So now future PS3 games will have the "achievement" equivalent. Great! Now I can be an achievement-whore on BOTH systems.

I like the mass adoption of multi-consoles among Gizmodo/Kotaku readership. It allows a much better conversation beyond unchecked fanboy-ism.
I agree that this looks great and kills the 360 interface. I would like to see Microsoft give Sony some genuine competition back in terms of usability. 360 definitely has the best online experience, but the UI is a fucking toy. Sony is now making it harder for MSFT to justify charging. I would love to see MSFT counter with an even larger value proposition to keep everyone who pays $50 a year happy, especially if they can choose to play the same game on the PS3 for free...

I really like my PS3..... as a blu-ray player. My 360 is just better for everything else.
Streaming media... my 360. My PS3 constantly gets DNA errors when I stream. I don't know why. Then; sometimes my PS3 will just randomly try to assign itself an IP number that is already being used by another device on my network and throw the whole network into shambles. I'll probably have to assign IP's to every device on my network just because one device that doesn't want to play nice.
Gaming.... my 360. I love multiplayer. I love XBL. I love the 360 controller. My Wii comes in a distant second. I only play with it when company comes over that wants to Wii bowl. I've played the first level of Resistance and two demos on my PS3. The Haze demo was baaaad.
Media Center Extender/DVR..... duh, my 360. The PS3 can't do it.
Renting movies online. Once again my 360. I can rent from the Marketplace or use "Watch it now" from Netflix.
OTOH, yesterday I bought a new audio receiver that handles hd audio formats that the PS3 supports and my 360 does not. It sounded great. A noticable difference in the amount of sound filling the room. But then again, I guess that falls under the heading of "nice blu-ray player."

Were there any demonstrations of the in-game XMB being used in a game? Was that the fourth picture in the gallery? I didn't get to watch the video demo.

@ab3: You have your points, and they are very good ones. I own a PS3, and let me tell you graphics are great, UI is good, it is all great.. BUT...I play games ONLINE more than anything. PS3 is getting better, but thats all i can say. Xbox 360 has many things that i can cuss about but not the online play.
Side note: even though SONY has lost billions on the PS3 trying to regain market share, i am proud of what they have sold me. I am glad I didn't have to send this in. (damn the red rings)

I agree with robotleawesome, they need to do more than an interface, like 'if power interrupts during an upgrade you have a brick', no revert back???? How about a Family Timer like the 360?
In my house
Wii > 360 > DS > PS3
PS3 would be higher if I included BluRay playing, and if this is one of the best BluRay players, than that technology needs help.

@robinandtami: And this is why we're friends.
For gaming and connectivity, the 360 is SOOOO much better. Metal Gear Solid 4 is a great game. XBox Live is a killer app.
