PlayStation 3 Firmware 2.41 Coming 'Midweek'
Posted by Mark Wilson at 10:48 PM on July 7, 2008
Sony's firmware 2.40 for the PS3 was pulled from servers after bricking several systems. Now at least one customer support service is reporting that firmware 2.41 will be released later this week. While Sony has yet to send out an official press release on the topic, it's looking like those who didn't download their in-game XMB fix fast enough will indeed get it soon. As for the bricking problem, it can be solved with solutions anywhere from a simple reboot to yanking the hard drive and formatting it on a PC. Oh, and crying to Sony like a baby probably helps, too. It's 2008, and Tech companies STILL can't figure out the art of rolling out updates... Why is Steam so good at it, while billion dollar corps fail? It's not the technology.

SONY should include a utility to automatically back up your current PS3 FW and gamesaves just prior to DLing a new FW so you can restore quickly and easily if the update C&B's.

seems like a healthy little dose of drama to compete with Microbland IMO

now if only the super stardust HD update would stop rebooting my ps3... we could have a win-win situation.

I'm glad mine wasn't affected.
Good ol' Sony.

I'm glad I managed to get the update while it was still available
I wonder if the bricking of a couple of systems is the only reason it was pulled out, everyone I talked to didn't seem to have a problem installing it; it seemed to me as a pretty scarcely spread problem..

@MacBandit: Yeah, they have to come up with a better solution.

@Sora57:
Nice thought but they need to do more than that. There current backup solution only backs up PS3 saves not PS2 saves and music and videos. It does not backup game downloads which sucks big time. I recently got my PS3 replaced under a BestBuy replacement plan (PS3 60GB died). I backed up before it the 60GB died totally. Even after a restore it took me 2 days to download and install the nearly 20gbs of games I had on the drive before hand. This doesn't include disc installs that I haven't completed yet.

I'll be waiting at least a week for any negative reports before applying it.

So I got the 2.40 update, which seems to be working ok, but what is the deal with the trophies? (ok now Jerry Seinfeld is a fanboy"What's the Deal with that!?")
I mean how do you get a trophy? Whats the biggest one and where do I get it?

@MacBandit: That's odd. When I replaced my HDD on my 60GB PS3 for a bigger one, and did a restore from my backup it restored everything, including PSStore games and PS2/PS1 saves.

Can someone confirm if 2.40 update fixed the mp4 streaming issue? I can't believe that Sony pulled the 2.4 update because a few PS3s got bricked while it won't even acknowledge the fact that there are so many of us out there that lost the ability to stream mp4s from the stupid 2.2 update.

@VideoVampire: Trophies = XBL Acheivments.
Haven't used my PS3 since I ran the 2.4 update just before they pulled it. I got a "?" where the trophy icon should be, so I figured that I should just wait for the patch beofre playing anything or trying to use the in game XMB. If it hits this week I would say that's a pretty decent turn around time.
@Kojima
We need an Emblem to Trophy converter patch for MGS4.

Im sure that the first one wasnt that swift either because of it being the first firmware update and the first time being released so im guessing that sony will in end with the next update will make it run smoother.

If MGS4 is getting Trophies, then we will have to be forced to start over again. Ya know, there are tons Big Boss save files out there. :D

@bmw5: You can't believe that Sony pulled a firmware that was KILLING RANDOM SYSTEMS?? The reason why is simple:
$400 to $600 bricks = We need to fix this now.
Broken mp4 streaming = BOO FREAKING HOO!! Change the file format and STFU.
Considering the fact that the firmware updates are FREE UPGRADES, I think that a little more lattitude and a lot more grattitude should be in order here.

@pandasonic: same here. when I upgraded my 20GB HDD to 250GB, the backup utility saved everything...games saves (PS3 and PS2) videos, downloaded games, smut photos, smut videos...it's was all there man...what is MAcBandit talking about?
@Mr.SithNinja: the question mark is because you have no trophies. If you select it, it shows you which trophies you do have. Since Super StarDust is the only game that offers them at the moment, you may want to wait or go at it. Can't get 100% completion without the latest SSDHD upgrade though since the last trophy is for splitscreen co-op. I updated the night the firmware was made available and had no problems since.

A@MacBandit: Are you sure? because i did a backup right before installing 2.40 (I haven't restored).
I have 4 games for my PS3, many demos and the free DLC for GHIII. The backup came 16GB big and the biggest save i have is for Portal, wich is about 500 megs... I would supose that it wouldn't be that big if it was only the gamesaves.

yea, i've upgraded my ps3's hdd a few times now and have done several backups; all of my data is there after i did my complete backup / restore on the new harddrive.
a backup is the only way to be able to backup your gamesaves that are 'copy protected'. you can't backup your rockband saves to an sd card or usb hdd; you have to do a full backup (just like a few other games, so annoying!!)
ideally i'd like to see sony add a feature where one can upload his/her own top 5 games saves to a sony server and in turn have the saves available whenever you login to another ps3. that would be sweet!! but i doubt to see this until firmware 2.9x, hehe.. :P
