Pioneer Going Blu-ray For Set-Top Recorders
Posted by Matt Hickey at 12:00 PM on July 9, 2008

Blu-ray set-top players are expected to be hot sellers this upcoming holiday season, but you might want to hold off until early next year when Pioneer and Sharp team up to bring Blu-ray recorders to living rooms in America. The partnership is hardly surprising—Sharp is part owner of Pioneer—and the recorders will launch in Japan this year and be shipped overseas next, with Europe and America likely being the first markets to get them. No word if they'll use those awesome new ultra-high-capacity disks we mentioned earlier, but not likely for this consumer-focused line. [Reuters]

It'll catch on in about eight years or so, right around the time a new format will surface.

Pioneer lost my support sometime ago after purchasing one of their dvd recorders. Now I'll admit that I'm not a DVD guru (I mainly use my comp, and the software of my choice), but there was one big issue, not being able to fast forward or skip the god damn FBI warnings, and the other warnings. In fact there were even a few DVD's that made me play through the f*cking previews. Now it may very well be possible that all dvd players do this, and it might be possible that there is some kind of federal mandate that they must do this. If this is the case, then it's not Pioneers fault, but until someone enlightens me to the in's and out's of this system, I don't like Pioneer.

@jkr2: It's all DVD players... even for us that live out of the FBIs jurisdiction. (NZ)
I wonder what these cost? Probably better to stick to HDD recorders for now.

I had a DVD recorder from pioneer. Worked okay, but was really limited in terms of functionality, menus, user interface. Died after around two years.
Can anyone answer the question as to why DVD recorders didn't simply replace DVD players? VCR recorders were around for ages and after the initial unveiling no one had a VCR which didn't record. No one I know has a DVD recorder. And the format has been around long enough for them to be A) cheap B) feature rich C) work perfectly. Mine was far from being any of those. Especially C.
Is the MPAA behind this? Is there a secret alliance between all DVD player manufacturers to keep them from gaining traction? Was there a second gunman? I must know!

It's just a different time. When VCRs came out, it was the coolest thing to rent movies and record stuff to watch later.
Now, we have DVRs and Hulu if you miss your favorite shows. DVD started out its consumer life as a playback only format at the video store, and no one thought any different.
I dunno... I've never thought I needed a DVD recorder.

That looks like an old DV-333, which was probably one of the best DVD players out in many years. I'd probably STILL be using it if mine wasn't dropped and broken. The PQ and build rivals pretty much all of the crap thats manufactured now.

So will someone let me know when the prices become even remotely reasonable?
$40 a DVD isn't reasonable, neither is $30, and I'm sure not going to pay over $400 for a player.

Hey guys, just wondering ..
I didn't catch up with BR technology for a longggggggggggg time.
I remember when the only "reasonnably cheap" BR player was the ps3. I'm buying a new desktop in a couple of months, and ... Is there any good alternative to a ps3 now? (knowing I have little to no interest in ps3 gaming)
Thanks!
