Philippe Kahn Successful in Transpac Sailing Record Attempt

Sunday morning, Philippe Kahn of camera phone fame and Richard Clarke successfully finished their double handed record attempt of the Transpac Cup. The sleep deprived two man team survived squall after squall, cuts and bruises, waves the size of small buildings, exploding rigging, and fishing nets wrapped around their keels to arrive from SF to Honolulu in 7 days, 20 hours and 50 minutes. They not only beat the old double handed record by about a full day, but they were the fastest boat to cross the finish line, beating many longer, better crewed boats. [Pegasus, previously]

That's funny! I work for a CMOS image sensor company and one of our designers took part in Transpac last year. He didn't win though!

Reviewing some of my own pictures, I guess it does... It's just odd to see things from that angle and with little point of reference, I guess.

OK, that picture is REALLY disorienting. The bridge is obviously the Golden Gate, but that sure as heck doesn't look like the Headlands...

I bet when they crossed the finish line all thoughts of sleep deprivation and injuries vanished. Live the dream.

Gizmo--Thanks for posting about Kahn's transpac. Kahn has several boats and teams (Team Pegasus) participating in races all over the world, and its great to see endurance racing getting a shout out on the tech sites. Keep your eyes peeled for the Volvo Ocean Race, which starts in October. They have a dedicated media person with their own carbon fiber multimedia throne to upload video via sat phone. Its really pretty awesome
