Peak's Plasmablade is Sci-Fi-like Surgical Tool of the Future
Posted by Kit Eaton at 11:20 PM on July 25, 2008
Cutting open a person for surgery using a plain old scalpel seems pretty barbarian compared to this new cutting tool from Peak. Instead of a sharp metal edge, or even an electrosurgical cutter, the Plasmablade uses pulses of plasma generated around its tip to locally cut and cauterise flesh such as skin, fat and muscle. It has the advantages of not damaging nearby tissue since its generated heat remains short term and local, and there's less... uh... smoke to worry about than with electrosurgical tools. If you can stomach the idea, there's a pretty graphic demo video of the blade in action. Just don't be eating while you watch.
The FDA's just okayed it for marketing in the US, so it may be coming to an OR near you soon. [Peak Surgical via Medgadget]

@prix: Heck yes! Actually you would be surprised how "Star Trek-ish" wound healing has become in your lifetime. My dad is a surgeon and currently runs a wound clinic where they sometimes subject patients to the hyperbaric chamber for healing wounds. It's just a chamber filled with 85% or better oxygen and pressurized to 2-3 atmospheres.
@ackthbbft: I'll second that!

Does this remind anyone of a late night infomercial? Someone shows you how the product works. Then they show one or two "inferior" products at work, usually which slip, stick, or cause damage, wielded slowly and clumsily by someone incompetent to the voice over of "What a mess!". Example
+ Watch video
This infomercial was from 1984. Then they show you their product, wielded by a pro, who moves with quick, deliberate moves. I like the product, but I wonder about a company who hires a firm whose credits include QRB, the Juice Tiger, and anything involving Billy Mays.

This reminds me of the Night Gallery episode titled "The Little Black Bag" [www.imdb.com]
In the episode a washed out doctor finds a black bag from the future that contains a scalpel that automatically cuts repairs and seals the incision.
Science fiction inspires reality.

Surgeons using 'bovi' knives tend to inhale 'bovi smoke' which is basically the result of electrocuting the tissue with much of it turning into major carcinogen containing smoke. And then the patient turns around and sues the doctor who risks their health/life to help the patient. Great world we live in these days.
eff-nuts.

"Ex vivo" human skin IS cadaver skin. "Ex vivo" means "out of the living." So yes, they were demonstrating this on cadaveric flesh.
The "in vivo porcine model" means a living (anesthetized) pig.
