Pandora For iPhone Updated With Stereo
Posted by Matt Hickey at 11:00 AM on July 26, 2008
The Pandora app for iPhone got an upgrade today and now streams music to your earbuds in stereo over Wi-Fi. A few other things are updated as well, including auto-complete and station resume if you pause. If you're a user, you can download the 1.1 update now. [Pandora Blog, via iPhoneBuzz]

Why did I wait in line for a "3G" phone when companies like Pandora are only going to give me the good stuff over WiFi?

Pandora is... amazing. I just updated, and the fidelity is so much greater!
This is currently my favorite application.

Thank you very much, I just updated.
I understand what Pandora is all about, but sometimes I wish if I typed in a song or a band, it would play that song or just them, not things similar.
But, on the other side, Pandora did show me a lot of other good bands, like Pepper.

I like Pandora but I do use Last.fm more so. Although Last.FM is really slow even on 3G

I love the "sexist lyrics" part of the description.
Sometimes their lyrics are sexist but all you lovely bitches and hos should know they're trying to correct this...

It streams in stereo and higher bitrate ONLY on wi-fi, not over 3G or Edge. Both of those methods of streaming don't change. Big improvement, though if you listen where you have a wi-fi connection.

@lifterus: The iPhone SDK limits you to using Wi-Fi to move large amounts of data. Like, oh say, the iTMS.
In this case, it's almost the same thing. The mono + lower bitrate means the data is small enough to move over 3G/EDGE.

@Y2KGTP:
Hell, someone should jailbreak Vista while they're at it.
The most interesting thing about this article is finding out that the Pandora app wasn't in stereo before. Meaning that all the pathetic slobbering over it here at Giz was over an app that played music in mono. That's just funny.
I guess that iPhone users get used to all of those limitations that their beloved device imposes upon them, so this probably doesn't seem at all strange to them.

@Anticitizen: Thankfully Orb is a jailbreak app, and I can't wait until the 2.0 version is out.

WiFi-only? Sorry, that kills it. I love Pandora, but if my web capable phone couldn't access it over its own data network and relied on a hotspot to use, then it's damn near worthless.

@Anticitizen: sure, stereo over EDGE is pushing it, but stereo over 3G, which starts at 384 kbps (with a good signal) and tops at 1.6 mbps (3.2 mbps on some devices) is not a problem...
I stream stereo Internet radio (128-192 kbps MP3) over 3G with my Nokia N95 all the time - even when driving down the freeway at 80 mph. So I don't see any reason why I can't do it with my ihone 3G!

Just to be clear, when they say mono they mean that the two audio channels are combined into one, streamed, and then split into two. You get all the same noise, you just don't get the guitar on one side, drums on the other thing. So the music doesn't really sound 3D. It's not as good as listening to music on the iPod itself, but it's not bad.
Pandora is absolutely a killer app for the iPhone/iPod Touch. Having it when I'm driving or walking around is great, but I've been using it mostly as a simple way to bring custom radio to my living room and bedroom stereo. So the improvement of audio quality when I'm at home is a big benefit.

I didn't want to update to 1.1, because I noticed it no longer has the option to do a "Quickmix" of your channels.
But stereo on wifi, hmm....

@drewls: Are you serious? Are you blaming the mono-only fault of the application to the limitations of the phone? It really sounds like you just wanted to bitch about the iPhone, but your bitching is REALLY about the first iteration of the app, not the phone itself.

@TriZz:
You might want to read my post more carefully. I didn't blame anything on the phone. I just find it amusing that people go apeshit over a phone and applications that have such shocking limitations.
I was merely stating that the mindset that had these lemmings drooling over the first iteration of the Pandora application is indicative of the nonsense that iPhone users in general seem to have to put up with.
The iPhone itself didn't even HAVE any legitimate applications until it's second generation.
Now, we move to a glimpse of a conversation between two iPhone fanboys in 2010:
"Hey, Jim, there's a new version of the iPhone out now! I hear this one actually can make phone calls!"
"Wow, really? That's amazing! This will revolutionize the cell phone market!"
"Yep, that's Apple, always innovating".
Then, we go to 2012:
"Jim! Jim! I heard the new iPhone is going to have a phone application that can actually use area codes! This is gonna rock!"
"Wow, that's great. My mom is getting pissed that I haven't called her since I got rid of my Razr."
"Yeah, my mom was bitching too. I even showed her the graphics on Super Monkey Ball 4. She still tried to deny that the iPhone was the best phone ever. Can you believe that?"
"She's just a hater like those mouth breathers that use things like the HTC Touch Pro. What a bunch of troglodytes."
"Yeah, Windows Mobile is for losers."
"Holy shit, who turned out the lights!"
"Must be a blackout."
"Well, not to worry, my friend! I have just purchased wifi flashlight 4.0 from the appstore, so we're saved!"
"You got the flashlight 4.0?"
"Yeah, why?"
"Gizmodo said that 3.0 was way better. They said that the black screen they added to make the interface better on 4.0 kind of made it less useful."
"Screw that! Look how good it looks in black. It's the sleekest flashlight ever."
"Actually, I can't see it in the dark."
"Oh. Well, you'll see it when the lights come on."
Some time later, as the blackout continues...
"Jim?"
"What?"
"Do you think that the new iPhone makes me look fat?"
"No way, dude. The newest iPhone is only an inch thicker than the old one. Why?"
"Well, I was thinking maybe it was why I still can't seem to find a girlfriend."
"Nah, it's just hard to find the right woman. Look at me, it took me years of looking to find the right girl."
"Yeah, I guess."
"What women really want is a guy who can be like one of them. It makes them more comfortable. That's what Liz told me anyway."
"Oh, that reminds me, is she gonna let you go out on Saturday?"
"Nah, I can't. I've got a full day planned. After I finish her pedicure, I have to paint the living room."
"Oh, what color did you finally decide on?"
"Salmon."
"Salmon? You mean pink?"
"We decided that was best."
"Pink's nice."
"Oh, thank Jobs! The lights are back on."
"We better get back to work, those blog posts aren't going to type themselves!"
