Panasonic Shows Off Surface-Like Digital Wall
Posted by Matt Hickey at 11:00 AM on July 18, 2008
Microsoft's getting some competition for its Surface device. Panasonic is showing off a very Surface-like product it's calling Digital Wall, and it's exactly what it sounds like. While at this point it doesn't appear to offer all the the features of Surface it could also come in much cheaper that the Microsoft version, and for many people that's the key. Hit the jump for a short video of the Digital Wall in action. [Digital World Tokyo]

Nice for power point presentations, I guess.

compete? nah. Provide a hardware platform for the Microsoft Surface software, sure.

This looks awesome. Unfortunately it probably won't ever become commonplace because by the time other people are ready to accept such an item it will be obsolete. I wish I had one in my house. Is it a multi-touch interface? In the videos I've watched it looks like she only uses one hand.

Each day we get closer to Minority Report! (tech wise, not the whole creepy looking into the future thing)

I thought they showed this a while ago. Oh well, if this causes them trouble, maybe Microsoft will take another look at Plex.

That looks more like TouchWall than surface.

@Mr.DuckSauce: The only technology that should be used with a PowerPoint (or Keynote) presentation is a .38 Smith & Wesson with two bullets. One for the presenter and one for the self. It's the only way to end the misery.

@OMG! Ponies!: Roger that! Powerpoint use should limited be to trained and licensed users (must pass 100 question test with 100% accuracy) and then only if there's absolutely no other way to disseminate the information (carrier pigeon included). Do NOT create a power point slide, then READ IT TO ME in the presentation. Save me the boredom of listening to your droning voice reading to me something I can already read, and just EMAIL it to me - saves you and me a LOT of wasted time.
ahem. *straightens shirt, takes breath*

I'd have watched the whole video, but the Midori ad was too in-your-face and annoying for me to bother continuing through. I'm going to go have a Midori sour now.

I seem to recall a demo of something that looked very similar to this. It was more about showing off multi-touch controls (much like how the iphone multitouch functions), and was demoed on something like google earth. cool stuff.

It's still in its infancy. When I was at the Panasonic Center in Odaiba, one of the ladies there gave us a carefully scripted presentation. Still very conceptual for now...
They also had this table that was supposed to help conduct meetings. Something like the Surface, but much deeper conceptually. Like you could place a piece of paper on it and then start writing with your finger on the table, etc.

Yea, so I was in Japan over 2 years ago at the Panasonic store, and they had that same display. It¹s nothing new. They also had this table thing that you could flick photos around and view them within the table.

Wall vs. table? I'm thinking wall is cooler, but if I'm all curled up on the couch with snack treats, table sounds more appealing. Unless wall has a remote...and besides, if the table is the computer, where do I put my snack treats?
