Our Favourite iPhone Apps
Posted by Jason Chen at 5:30 AM on July 26, 2008
After two weeks of using the iPhone 2.0 full-time, each of us here has developed a fondness for a handful of apps that we can't live without. Some of them show up in just about everyone's top five (Yelp, Facebook), and some of them we'll just attribute to the guy being a weirdo (MooCowMusic's Band). Here they are in an order that I deem most appropriate. Basically, the ones I like are up front.
• Remote: Control your iTunes or Apple TV over the network from anywhere inside your house. I've got a great setup for this that basically broadcasts music to every room of my home, which I will detail in a review next week.
• AIM: It's no iChat and it's not multi-service capable, but it is AIM and it does exactly what you think it does. We covered its shortcomings in the App Marathon, it's still quite a good product.
• Pageonce: The personal assistant that keeps all your online accounts synced to one place for easy reference.
• Twinkle: The Twitter app that we loved on Installer.app makes its way to the iPhone. Why do we like Twitter? Because we're Twitter Shitters.
• Facebook: It's like regular Facebook, but with less functionality! It's fast though, and you can see what that guy who randomly added you is up to.
• Fulpower Motionx-Poker: The realistic dice game gives you something to do when you really, really need to shake things.
• Yelp: Its current location-based search helped us find some good eats when we were down in LA for E3, and should be a good go-to tool if you're visiting a new city.
• Midomi: The free song recognition app can tell you what tune that is on the radio or blaring out of the speakers down at A&F. Beats having to call in to ask.
• Pandora: It's Pandora (the smart radio station) on the iPhone. Makes up for only having 16GB of your music at once.
• NYTimes: Read the NYTimes from the comfort of your iPhone, because Safari isn't quite good enough.
• EverNote: The note-taking app that makes it super easy to jot down or record random thoughts you want to remember later.
• Zenbe: A to-do list that you can sync to a webapp online or share with others. Great way to make collaborative shopping lists that both you and your wife can check off while in the supermarket. Divide and conquer makes grocery time twice as fast.
• MooCowMusic Band: You can fake play instruments.
• CityTransit: A guide to the NYC subway. Obviously, only useful for some of us.
• UrbanSpoon: Its like Yelp, but has a random slot-machine feature that can pick a restaurant for you to eat at. Pretty neat if you want to vary up your dining experience.
• BoxOffice: Look up show times for movies in theatres that are within X distance of your current location.

@OMG! Ponies!:
BoxOffice is great. I want them to add in movie trailers like "movies.app". Now i have them both installed. BoxOffice because its great and well organized, and "movies.app" just for the trailers.

I'm loving Cube Runner (free), Spinner (also free) and Trism at the moment.
Everything else is either:
Not worth it.
...meh
both.
Installer FTW!

BoxOffice is great but its linked to Fandango, meaning you can't buy tickets for half the theatres.
NYTimes is still crap.
PageOnce, however, once it's set up, is amazing. All it needs is the ability to bill pay off of it.

AIM constantly crashes on me. WHats up with that?
As does WHERE app. Either exits the app or reboots the system entirely.

All the apps are cool, but the best feature of the 2.0 upgrade for me by far was the addition of Microsoft Exchange support. The calendar is just awesome now that it is in synch with my work calendar. Love it.

So when the true push tech arrives, we won't have to be logged into certain apps to get updates right? i.e. - AIM, Twinkle, Facebook.

AIM SUCKS! It kicks me out the app 9 out of 10 times. It should really be pulled until the app is more stable.

Thieves=Death. They don't realize how their actions can really screw people. maybe not death but a tortuous beating nonetheless. They are scum of the earth. I too lost a computer bag with a digital camera a Treo 755p, a HP notebook, wireless headphones etc. tons of gadgets. My insurance covered it all but it was the info that replacing really sucked and thank "insert your religious preference here" that I had no vital passwords etc. Like losing the wallet, keep it all but gimme my Drivers License and cruital info that's a pain to replace, as well as my lie of course. Hear me thieves????? Give people the ID Cards etc. you losers!!!!!

@Yeebles: I agree with you...what a waste of 10 dollars...I miss ALL of my installer apps! Even the worthless ones were better than the stuff on the "app store." The only apps I have now are facebook and pandora. That's it. I'm not paying for the other worthless ones, and I don't have a 3G so the other good ones that require the "phone" are useless.

I love Trism, which is a tilt and drag color tile matching game. Very addicting. That's $4.95.
Also, once you get past the confusion of how to use, Instapaper is tailor made for iPod touch users since you can simply save web content locally on your touch and access it regardless of web connectivity. No frills but free and works.
Love Pandora, too.

The last.fm app is ooober. Pandora is great, but the last.fm app is better about playing well-known artists and unknown music that i actually like. Unfortunately, tuner is not so great, with weak support for internet radio stations that are not on the default tuner. Sorry, party107 & paris-one.

I am totally into remote app + airtunes right now. I just got an airport express to do it the other day, and now I want another. Now I just have to sort out the "unknown error -15000" whenever I try to do my computer and remote speakers at the same time. And if only there was a way to stream Pandora though this.

if only the guy I stole this iPhone from had bothered to get a 3G iphone, I wouldn't be in this predicament.
Just kidding.
What I had to go through to get mine:
-Sleep outside Apple store for 7 hours.
-Get rejected for being a loyal AT&T customer ("Rate plan not supported," even though I tried to change it.)
-Go to AT&T store. Claims no problem getting iPhone.
-Go back to Apple store. "Rate Plan not supported"
-Go back to AT&T store. "rate plan not supported for upgrade"
-Call AT&T executive support. Says take it up with apple.
-E-mail Steve Jobs.
-Get blown off by Steve Jobs. Says take it up with AT&T.
E-mail Steve Jobs again. ("I'm trying to GIVE YOU my business. if you were in my shoes, what would you do?")
-Get phone call from Office of President of AT&T. Says he received my e-mail, forwarded from Steve Jobs.
Get iPhone a few days later.

My current favorites are:
Starmap - the best of the astronomy apps.
Signal Scope - an audio and accelerometer tool (I am building a break out cable)
SignalSuite - for generating waves, noise, and sweeps.
Mobile News- and AP News agregator
SpeakEasy- for taking audio notes
I have gotten 3 bucks worth of laughs with Sound Machine.

I find Safari to be quite crashtastic, and I'm not liking the keyboard much... Remote is awesome, but had to be installed after borking itself. I haven't tried Pandora yet, as the desktop version didn't work in Canada. All in all, not nearly as stable as WinMob (on 3rd party devices, with 3rd party apps), as long as you know how to manage mem on WinMob. Ironic. Still I am loving it a lot, as it certainly is pretty. I'd love it more with multitasking, cut and paste, more stability and a somehow less crappy keyboard...

Zenbe Lists: You should do a separate review of Zenbe Lists. Show how you can share it between multiple devices. Edit it on the website. It's really amazing! Exactly what my wife and I wanted for our iPod Touches. We share the grocery list. Then we can both add items. Simply amazing. They took a bad rap for their original TOS. But they fixed it. That's why they need a separate review. Point out that the TOS is ok now. Because the top two reviews on iTunes are complaining about their original TOS. sbstrd
