New Star Wars: The Clone Wars Toys On Sale Midnight Tonight
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 12:00 PM on July 27, 2008
Star Wars purists like myself are probably going to ignore everything The Clone Wars with an intensity normally reserved for busting best buddies out of their carbonite prisons, but in case you're a geek that willingly and joyfully slurps up even the blackest dredges of George Lucas' mega franchise, Toys R' Us is getting ready to empty your wallets. At midnight tonight, hundreds of the toy purveyors' stores will be opened to give fans a first shot at owning their own piece of Clone Wars memorabilia. Okay, I will admit--some of it looks pretty cool.
Amongst the plethora of shiny toy options is several Titanium Series die-cast models, a couple of 3.75 inch action figures, and three pretty spectacular Star Wars LEGO sets. Toys R' Us is also holding a Galactic Star Wars Sweepstakes, where four winners will each receive one life-size character--Ahsoka, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker or Captain Rex—from The Clone Wars. What's with all three of the action figures having single droid legs next to them?

@DeadWriter:
Most likely the action figures come with a piece of a droid, and after buying the necessary figures, you can assemble a droid action figure.
I seem to remember seeing some figures with a c 3po piece in some of them for the same purpose.

@Neverkilled: Robot Jones, mechanical tyranical:
Indeed. You get a different droid part with each action figure (I just got back from buying my extra-big Millennium Falcon that was posted here about a month ago). The only thing is, it's _NOT_ part of the Clone Wars lineup. It's something they're doing with The Legacy Collection (replaces the 30th Anniversary Collection), which has more standard-looking characters. Each 8-figure wave comes with enough parts to build two distinct astromechs, and each 6-figure wave comes with the parts to build a new protocol droid, but the only evidence I've seen of any "6-figure" wave is actually a series of 2-packs where you get one regular character, one astromech/protocol droid, and one of six pieces for another protocol droid.
Anyways, it sounds like the "build-a-C-3PO" is actually C-3PX, a protocol droid who looks almost exactly like C-3PO (except he has an X mark on either his head or his torso)...and is a bounty hunter.

@DeadWriter: "What's with all three of the action figures having single droid legs next to them?"
Legs? LEGS??? Crap, you're right, they're droid legs.
I had noticed the "odd accessory" in the very first action figure photo, but didn't really look at the remaining pics. So, slightly out of context, the "odd accessory" just registered in my mind--and no I am (sadly) not kidding--as a vacuum cleaner. I mean, it looks pretty much just like my Hoover, anyway.
Then, seeing it as a vacuum cleaner, of course, meant I assumed the first figure was some kind of hideous maid. And, stay with me on this, from there it was kinda easy to see what looks like a dirty glass in the one hand and a gardening tool in the other. Sigh.
So, yeah, I admit, a really, really, REALLY stupid interpretation, but cut me some slack! The way Lucas' stories have gone so far downhill over the years, anything was possible, even a flabby dominatrix housecleaner. Droid leg indeed.
Still, it would be obnoxiously hypocritical of me to be slamming other folks (as I have been today) and let myself off the "you're an idiot" hook. Therefore, I hereby nominate myself as the ultimate DORK OF THE DAY.

@Purple Dave:
yes, it was 3PX, i dont think it had the distinct plating of 3po, which seemed to be the only real difference (at a glance at least).

do they have the "Anakin w/iPhone" set coming out too?
it'll be interesting to see how the flick and TV series compare to the Genndy Tartakovsky versions...
nifty stories.

Are those renders in the top image how the movie is going to look? That makes me sad... I mean, I understand they're going for the cartoony, we're all slightly off shaped thing, but seriously, those renders look like they came out of a PS2 game.

No. Fail.
Please quit with all the prequel crap. Nobody born before 1984 gives a crap about this stuff. It's not Star Wars. It's not the brief stint of luck that Lucas had in the '70s.
It's suck. Period.

Not a very successful embargo. I was walking in Old Town in Kissimmee on Friday and I noticed a small mom & pop toy store there already had all the Clone Wars toys on sale. Just thrown in there next to their Transformer and WWF toys.
