Netherlands To Get World's Largest Indoor Golf Complex
Posted by Matt Hickey at 2:40 PM on July 9, 2008
I play golf, but I hate the outdoors, so I'm going to move to the Netherlands, because they're on track to open this rad, giant, indoor golf course that I can play year round. Non-golfers won't understand what that means, but those of us in Seattle have a fairly short period that we actually get to go out and play, thus it's a crowded affair, making it very expensive. This magic land will have 34 indoor driving range berths, measure over 15,000 square feet, and feature weather-protected sand traps and water hazards. I'm hoping George Jetson attends the opening, because his handicap sucks. [Tuvie, via TechFresh]

@Hardcore1: 150,000 isn't that huge, either.

why not just take the 35 minute flight to Spokane from Seattle, plenty of golf courses and you could probably play 3 rounds for the price of 1 in Seattle... I never have a hard time getting a tee time

@daversW: agreed, the roof doesn't look high enough in the concept pictures, it'll have to be rediciously high for any decent player to play there. And with no wind it'll take some of the stragerdy out from it.

Do they mean 150,000 square feet? Because 15,000 square feet is smaller than your average back yard.

I can't imagine how expensive this will be to build, and then maintain. What, with the air conditioning and all.

It's so big that it's not even a golf course anymore. It's a golf complex.
Cool though. I wonder if they still use the golf carts.

@Hardcore1: Also, yes, they meant 150,000sqft.

14,000 sq meters ~= 150,696 sq ft

Don't worry Dubai will out-size them. Dubai Super-Sizes everything! Dubai, what's your answer?

This is NOT an indoor golf course. It's ONLY a practice facility. Check the site.

Put one underwater and use real glass. I don't like golf.

@ittekimasu: Et Al I practice at Chelsea Piers and I have never (nor have I ever seen anyone) go over the top line of the netting. They even have a little net ceiling which I have tried to hit to no avail. So the height isn't really an issue.

@Elk: We have, just outside of Amsterdam, the largest golf course of Europe. And it is public so no funny trousers. Also the Dutch learned the game from the Romans, improved it and taught the Scottish. Then we decided to continue trading slaves but the Scottish kept practising until they were the experts on the game.

I dont golf, but I wish they had something like that around here. Its so sad to see the golfers out shooting between snow piles on the first half decent day in spring. I know their wives would like this as well to get them the hell out of the house.

A company called Myriad wants to build a "Mega Casino" in Tunica, MS that will have an indoor golf complex. I can't imagine why, we have nice weather in Mississippi, it get's hot, but we play year round.
Here's the story out of a local Memphis news station:

Sounds like something they'd be building in Dubai or Japan.
But the Dutch?
Tricky buggers.

On the bright side, you won't have to worry about wind. Just have to worry about hitting it too high, bouncing off a pillar or beam and coming back at you. This does seem a little ridiculous, like the indoor ski slope Dubai has

Hello!
If you open your door and see a rather large not-smiling Neanderthal wielding a gigantic white plastic knife, like the trusses in this structure, be assured your toast will be buttered.

They didnt tell you that you get to use plastic wiffle balls. That way 150,000 sq ft is big enough to have a par 72. =)

I didn't know golf was that popular here in the Netherlands :S
ah well, the weather is usually not good enough for golf, so maybe it'll work.
If they ever go bankrupt, we can use the building as a place for huge dance events (Sensation White/Black, etc...) or LAN-parties \o/
