MythTV's MyMote iPhone Remote App
Posted by Jason Chen at 6:40 AM on July 24, 2008
The idea of controlling your DVR via your iPhone is nothing new, but this MythTV iPhone remote allows Linux DVR users to get in on the fun of using their phones as visual remotes. It's got a real-time program guide so you can easily set recordings, plus the standard channel and volume buttons to flip around channels with. The only thing we have to complain about is that the UI is fairly ugly and not refined at all, but it's bearable. Unfortunately all of us here use either TiVo or Media Center or the cheap set-top-box provided from our Cable company, so we can't test it out. Let us know how it works for you. [eHomeUpgrade]

@aseriesoftubes: " Hey, I resemble that remark (proud MythTV user here)."
I'm sorry, what? You 'resemble' that remark? What does that even mean?
Please tell me you meant to replace the word 'resemble' with the word 'resent'.

@homerjay: Hey, I resemble that remark (proud MythTV user here). You keep talking like that and Bob (the other Linux DVR user) and I are gonna find you and lay down the hurt. :)
This is yet another reason I need an iPhone.

It must have looked horrible on a Treo.

"Linux DVR users"
You mean all two of them?

I rarely watch TV...the few hours I get at home are mostly dedicated to my 360 or Wii...
That said, when I DO watch TV, it's always an issue of trying to remember where I last left the remote, then making sure I have the right one, then going through and deleting countless repeats of One Tree Hi...err, Robot Chicken...? CSI? Or some other show that actual "men" watch...I can't keep track of all of your latest in trends these days...*grumbles something about the youth of today*...

This seems like a great idea, right up until you use it.
I had an app like this for my Treo several years ago. Problems:
1) There is no universal remote. Period. Something will be missing. Many come close. None are complete.
2) You miss the physical touch of buttons.
3) You can't channel surf while talking on your phone.
4) You think you have a hard time handing over a remote to your wife/girlfriend now? Wait until it has all your junk stored in it.
The guide looks nice, but I don't know if that's a big win over the on-screen version. Besides, I'm "of that certain age" where switching from up-close viewing and over-there viewing means lifting my glasses.

there have been dozens of times while i was out of my house, and heard about a tv show that i would love to DVR. if someone could pull this off for normal run of the mill DVRs...im pretty sure my life would be complete.

@TheSonOfKrypton:
no it's a facetious way of saying that while he holds resentment for that remark, he is also represented by that remark.

I don't see it in the App Store. Am I missing it somehow? I tried searching!

I'm a MythTV user, but I don't have an iPhone. I'm thinking about getting a 1st gen one and hacking it so I don't have to switch from T-Mobile, but I'm also in the process of switching my main machine to an XP Media Center, and using my 360 as an extender. One less device in the living room, and cheaper to do that building a new HD MythTV box.

+1 the MythTV user tally here. I'm looking forward to getting home to my system tonight and trying this out.
@hardisonthefloor: I'm guessing this won't allow you to do remote scheduling, but MythTV already has that covered. I expose mythweb via a proxy on my network and have full remote control plus the ability to watch recorded programs via a flash player.

The goal behind these kinds of devices is to reduce the size of the remote and reduce the number of remotes required.
It's a DIY universal wifi remote.
The real cool hack is channel surfing on the phone to find the channel you want and then having it switch to the main screen. It'd be less annoying to the other folks in the room.
I'm still scratching my head over the assumption "MythTV" means "linux" here. It runs on Mac too. I'm more likely to buy a Mac user running MythTV owning an iPhone than a linux user owning an iPhone. The former has the ability to run iTunes and the latter requires a second box or dual boot and some patience. The linux user probably has an N8*0 or a Neo Freerunner.

@shawn_dude:
Home-built Ubuntu back-end in the back room with dual tuners and HD over firewire, home-built Ubuntu front end in a stero-component-looking HTPC case in the living room, two Apple laptops, and an iPhone.
I'm an equal opportunity gadget geek. :)
... my wife uses a crappy Nokia because it's all she wants.

I'm stubborn. I won't use an iPhone until I can either a) run iTunes in Linux (Ubuntu) or the phone no longer requires iTunes.
The other adult is a Mac addict. Iphone and all. Current HTPC is an Intel Core Duo Mini running OSX and EyeTV. I'm threatening to wipe the OS and load Ubuntu/MythTV. Though in fairness, the worst issues relate to HDCP from the cable box.
Phone = SE W810i. Sweet phone. Plugs into Ubuntu with no trouble. Nice flashlight too. Let's me tether my N810 to Edge if I want to.

@homerjay:
Well lets see, every Tivo out there runs Linux. In fact almost every successful DVR out there is built on Linux.
MythTV has a much larger following than you might think. As for power, well i have a 2Ghz PC running FOUR count them 4 tuners (2 are HD 2 are SD).
