MobileMe Setup in iPhone OS 2.0 Video
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 1:45 AM on July 9, 2008
We already knew that MobileMe e-mail services are now fully active and accessible through any desktop mail client. This morning I tried to set up MobileMe in my iPhone with OS 2.0 and I discovered that the calendar, bookmarks, and contacts all synchronized fine, even while push synching--the ability of MobileMe to make changes to your iPhone over the air as they happen--is not active yet.
As you can see, MobileMe's setup is quite straightforward. Like with .mac accounts in the original iPhone, the preference panel only requires you to add your user name and password. After the information is verified, the iPhone takes you to a screen where you can turn on and off the synchronisation of calendar, mail, bookmarks, and address book. In its current beta state, the synchronisation process completely obliterated my current data, replacing it with Addy's.
Unfortunately, as you can see in the video, she didn't have any data in her .mac account except for mail messages (she has never synchronized her current Sony Ericsson or MacBook with the .mac servers, so everything was empty after the first synch.) I don't know if completely replacing the existing iPhone contents is the desired behaviour or a bug in the iPhone OS 2.0 beta, so we would have to wait for the release of the new operating system this Friday to see how it it really works. There are two possibilities: either the synchronisation would mix the existing data and the incoming data in the iPhone, or it would assume that you would like to fully replace your iPhone contents with a fresh copy from MobileMe.
After the first synchronisation over the air, however, the push synchronisation didn't work. We would have to wait for tomorrow--which apparently could be the date for MobileMe activation--to see how it goes. Stay tuned for our ongoing iPhone 2.0 and MobileMe testing.

Quick question.
If I change over to .me from .mac, will emails sent to my .mac automatically be sent over to .me? If so do I get the option to address my email as .me and .mac?
Thanks.

I assume this will not work to retrieve hotmail accounts?

@Mr.SithNinja: Very nice!
I'm still waiting for official Entourage support. I really like the idea of syncing everything but I need it to sync with Entourage.

Can we get a video for Exchange syncing? AT&T says that you have to be a business customer for that to work but from the video it looks like you can select the option right from the screen.

A password of "password" isn't very secure.

@pdditty: sounds like a load of garbage too me... since v2.0 should be on 1G iPhone, and iTouch as well, it seems it should just work if there is any type of data connection (edge, 3g, or wifi).

When I sync my MS Outlook contact list with my iphone, it will not categorize my contacts into the groups that I have made in Outlook (eg., business, personal, buyers, sellers, etc...). Itunes justs takes all of the contacts, and puts them in alphabetical order, without any contact grouping on my iphone. Also, certain contacts that are filed as, for example, plumber, are no longer filed that way, but by the plumber's name on my iphone. Will mobile me solve any of these problems? Will the 2.0 update solve this? Will there be any apps from the app store that will solve this? Anyone know any answers to this?

@jeepingeek: BlackBerries can't talk to Exchange directly, they have to connect via BlackBerry Internet Service or BlackBerry Enterprise Server (both which require service book configuration on the device). Iphone talks directly with exchange server via https activesync protocol.

@hypnotik_jello: @pdditty: I'm not sure how AT&T will handle it, but that is exactly how Verizon treats it's Blackberries. If you want Exchange support you have to have the $45/mo plan for data, where if you are using other email types (POP3 and the like) you only pay $29 for data.

@Joseph: Any password typed in a video posted on a blog isn't very secure, last I checked.

@dannnn: I second this question.
@Canoehead: You have to pay Microsoft to get POP access (or IMAP?) access to your hotmail account.
@Stacky Botrus: That does and will continue to blow for as long as they continue to keep not fixing it.

@Mayor McRib: They will mirror each other, basically the .me account is an alias to the .mac account, or the other way around....

@zed0: you can usually get a $30 break on the price at the Apple Store with .Mac. Always can with a new comp purchase; in fact they try to push it on you with that as a selling point. Maybe you can haggle the price down with a new iPhone purchase...

with mobileme if I get the family account for my wife and i, will we be able to sync each other's info so that our calendars can be synced together?
Or would it work if I just bought a single license and entered it on both iphones?
