MechRC Robot Does Evolution of Robotic Dance Vid, Original Put to Shame
Posted by Kit Eaton at 9:09 PM on July 14, 2008
Incredible: what more's there to say? Incredible. Based on Judson Laipply's "Evolution of Dance Video," but way better. We get to see a robot doing Vanilla Ice's dance moves better than he did. A robot doing the "walk like an Egyptian" dance. The upcoming MechRC robot has been under development for three years and has 17 independently-controlled servos, and built-in audio. And if this video is anything to go by, when it goes on sale in the fall it should make quite a dent in the miniature robot world. [MechRC via RoboSavvy. —Thanks Limor]

I would have been truly impressed if it actually DID the YMCA.

@Git Em SteveDave is a poor substitute for LindsayJoy: Well, the original vid didn't have all of the iconic YMCA moves either. I laughed when it got to 'Bye Bye Bye.' That was great.

Even if a robot is doing them - they are still VANILLA ICE'S dance moves. And that's just sad. You show me a robot moving across the floor like MC Hammer - then I'll be impressed.

@Hectorvex: Did you actually watch the vid? Hmmm... I'm sure there's a bit of "Can't touch this" in there. Oh yes, there is.

You guys are just jealous because he is a better dancer than you. Probably does better with the ladies too. (I loved it.)

@Kit Eaton: I'm not sure I want to know what you are implying with that last bit... but I will concede that perhaps MC Hammer was a robot, though based on his finances he certainly wasn't anything more than maybe the 10 million Peso Man.

@Hectorvex: You sure Hammer wasn't actually a 'bot himself? Those trousers could conceal a lot of mechanics :)

@Kit Eaton: No robot can reproduce the magical way Hammer moved across the floor like his feet were comprised of 1000's of caterpillars. Hell, no human can either.

Wouldn't every dance he does be the robot?
...or the robo-boogie?

This was mildly entertaining, not like the "inspirational comedian" whose routine this is based off or. I think "inspirational comedy" is a code word for schmuck who is too afraid of upsetting people to be funny or entertaining...

I can't help but think that at some point many years in the future, this video will be pulled from the archives of our history and presented as a part of a documentary on robot evolution . . . and then all of the robot audience will laugh.

I don't know that it puts the original to shame, but it was pretty F'n cool. That cartwheel @ 2:20 was amazing!

I'd be afraid to buy one of those. Not with all its knowledge! I couldn't keep it in a cage, it'd break loose! The only protection I would have is my Blendtec blender, but Will it blend?

i'm impressed, don't get me wrong, but it's legs didn't do nothing with the Elvis/Hammertime movement that would have been amazing enough to say 'better than the original'
Very impressive though either way. Just tired of the hype machine of 'better than the original' when it's just a cool idea.

@atomx: Got to agree with the atom man. This was awesome and all but only in relation to the original. No way in hell this puts the original to shame?
