Make Your Old iPhone Dock Accommodate Your iPhone 3G's Bulbous Arse
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 4:00 AM on July 22, 2008
There's no dock in the iPhone 3G's box. And the iPhone 3G doesn't fit in the original iPhone's dock. You could pay US$29 for a new one. Or you could just make the damn thing fit in the dock you already have. All you need is steady hands, a Dremel and a buffing cloth. Carve, buff, voila. Here are the happy, frugal results:
Of course, your original iPhone might not fit so harmoniously after this mod. [Hard Mac via Engadget]

I have to admit, I paid the $30 for the new dock. I would have hacked up my old one, but I was selling it in the complete accessory package with my old phone.

Tip:
Put a piece of tape over the connector before you start to save cleaning crap out of it afterward.

@badhatharry: Well, thank goodness it was your friend's dock!

@turbineseaplane:
The real joke is having a car stereo hookup worth $100+ that no longer charges the 3G.

I did it with a Dremel.
Works great!
Screw Apple and the extra $30. What a joke.

This is one thing that I really don't like that Apple does. You need to buy a new dock for everything.

I can't believe I buy Apple stuff. They get me every time s a new version comes out. I have to start all over again by buying all new accessories. It is starting to piss me off more and more. But them my wanton lust increases and well ..... I am really stupid.
Where did my brains go?

I went with the Agent 18 plastic case which also comes with a universal dock connector, pretty slick if you have the universal iPod dock laying around. However the case is a bit slippery, haven't dropped it yet (knock on wood), its my first iPhone so i'm still trying to figure out the best way to carry the thing in my pocket. I also have a Incipio fitted gel case from ATT, that's also not bad, much more grippy, but less drop protection.

Any knife will work as well, that stuff is not hard to cut away at. If the plugins are the same (obviously they are) then its a pretty obvious solution.
Good to hear confirmation that the plug itself has not changed at all.
Not that I will ever see an IPhone in the wild to purchase.
I don't really want to give ATT my money for something they can't even give me a delivery date on.
ATT Goon: We guarantee it within 21 days!!!
Me: Or what?
ATT Goon: What do you mean?
Me: What do I get if you don't get it in 21 days?
ATT Goon: Um... Nothing, I guess?
Me: Yeah, an unbacked guarantee that only costs me $300. Fabulous.

I tried to do this a couple of days ago to a friend's dock. It still charges, but no longer syncs.

@butaneko: I feel you. My iPhone 3G is my first iAnything, and I bought the cable for my sweet Alpine deck. Data is good, charging is bad. Thanks Apple, for breaking the backwards compatibility on the first device I have ever owned from Apple.

Why does almost every Iphone pic I have seen have AIM on the homepage even though most everyone pans it as being a POS app?

God bless Apple. They charge you for the dock and then they charge you separately for the cord to plug it in.
Is it me, or is Cupertino copying Microsoft's XBox 360 business plan?

I'm going to do this to my dock right away. I'm running out of sincere sounding answers every time my phone asks me, "Does this dock make me look fat?"

@butaneko: Does your deck allow useage with your 2.0 software? I bought my stereo right after I got the first iPhone and it wouldn't play music through it.

@Alluvian: My wife and I went into an AT&T store on Sat to order an iPhone on direct fullfillment. Only 2 days later (1 business day) she received an email from FedEx telling her it is on the way. Should be here tommorow. So if you want one without waiting in like for hours at the LAME Apple stores, you could have it in a few days (even though AT&T said it would take 10-21 days)

lol brilliant, that was what crossed my mind when i heard the socket was exactly the same but only the shape of the back kept it from sitting properly. a little plastic is nothing to a dremel, its just a matter of whether you care if you have a few scratches on your dock.
