LED Bath Tiles: Either a Very Good Or Very Bad Idea
Posted by Matt Hickey at 10:03 AM on July 8, 2008
The idea of LED illuminated tiles is a good one in theory, but I'm afraid it'll end up like fibre optic lighting and Bluetooth headsets in that people with no taste will take it over, ruining it for the rest of us. The waterproof tiles snap together Lego style and have a repeating connectivity scheme, much like model train tracks, except these light up and illuminate your kitchen or bathroom. And the layouts aren't static, they can be changed at a whim. I'm hoping that some people exercise restraint if these ever come to market. [Dvice]

I never really thought of fiber-optic lighting as tasteless. I've always thought it was very cool, and I considered myself as possessing fairly excellent taste. Hmmm.

cool idea for the kitchen.
i wonder what colors they will come in, and if they will be completely waterproof

Is it just me or does this look like surveillance light strips in I Robot?

We need animated led bath tiles, oh, and make them touch sensitive too, then I will play pong against people (read: girls) in the shower!

I could see this being cool if it were an accent tile under the cupboards in the kitchen for better lighting on the countertops. But I have to agree with Matt that like rope lighting or glass bricks people with no taste could ruin it for the rest of us.

Now I can have algae and mildew growing on my tiles at the same time.

I love the idea of having more electronics by the biggest bodies of water in my house

If they can develop that safely, that would make shaving my legs ungodly easier. Sign me up once you've done some testing...

I'll consider it until its sold in Walmart. I'd use these instead of a base board in the bathroom. Chair rail could be a good option too but base board application seems more functional cuz I can't imagine that these are very bright... nor would I want them to be.

Do LED lights work with dimmer switches?

I fail to understand how 'people with no taste' can 'ruin' things for you. Either it looks good or it doesn't. Of course, I don't seem to be a hipster, so maybe the elevation of other people's perception over my own judgment is just something I don't get.
@keh: Generally not. They do get a bit dimmer as voltage drops, but ISTR that the operating range on an LED is much narrower than on an incandescent bulb.

@keh: Depends. Some LED lights are made to work with off the shelf dimmers, but some require special switches.
I love this idea, but question the ability to change them 'at a whim', as that introduces all sorts of waterproofing issues.
