Krell Papa Dock Combo Costs Four Grand, Makes Your 96kbps Tracks Sing
Posted by John Mahoney at 3:45 AM on July 10, 2008
Audiophile megabrand Krell's Papa Dock (companion to the US$1500 Kid Dock, which snaps into its new daddy) boosts the Kid's output to 150 watts, sports a gigantic power supply along with isolated stereo channels, and will set you back another US$2500 on top. I would say our jury's still out on spending US$4000 on serious audiophile gear to amplify a consumer-level source input, but this thing looks like it could take a bullet for you, if that's your thing. And naming your product after a brutal Haitian dictator is always a great way to stir up some interest. [Krell]

Hey listen to my 128Kbps mp3 in this $4000 amp.
No, way!...
Although, I believe that if you have lossless apple files (m4a) the sound would be awesome, you also need some B&W 800 series to go with that.
I suggest getting a B&W zeppelin instead for $600 it's worth the money, trust me.

"Cold" take a bullet for me!?!? yeah, an ipod as a source will only be good if you're running rockbox or using ALAC, but i'd rather use FLAC or wav, and ipod touch/phone won't support that, so this would be useless with stock software :[. for 4000$, i'm gonna be running an RWA mod on my source :P

little off topic, but i've been searching for a cheap portable boombox that will hook up to my ipod. Even if all it has is a aux in connection (headphone jack), but to no avail i've found nothing worth spending money on.
Just want somthing to listen to when playin ball or at the beach.
WTF
please any ideas would be helpfull, it doesn't need great quality just loud enough to hear.

This just shows that having a lot of money doesn't necessarily mean people have any common sense.

I don't care what you pump it through, 96kbps is crap. Good way to trash a pair of expensive speakers.

Krell usually makes some pretty legit equipment, even though I don't usually care for their sound. That said, this product is for people with more dollars than sense.

This is gonna be slightly off-topic, but Giz I gotta say this not:apple thing isn't working out. If you were to check it out right now you'd see that it has two posts I'd consider apple-y (this one and that iphone one) and is missing the four newest posts. Not whining, just thought you should know.

Now, I love my iPod, but let's get real here. Even if you're listening to an apple lossless encoded file, the signal to noise ratio of the iPod output (not the headphone output, the dock output, mind you) measures at around -84dB which is the effective resolution of an ideal 14-bit audio device. In other words, complete garbage. All the Krell in the world isn't going to make this sound better.
Notice you won't find this spec anywhere on apple's site. I had to measure it myself with an Audio Precision.

Your current computer + Devilsound DAC [www.devilsound.com] + Audioengine A5 [audioengineusa.com] = 90% of the performance of these clunkers with $3400 (plus whatever you would have spent on speakers) left over for hookers and blow.
If you really, really need a bit-perfect iPod transport, the Wadia iTransport [www.musicdirect.com] will do the Kid Dock's job for all of $400.

I just send my iTunes over the Express via optical out into my THX receiver. Sounds fine. The iPod is better off in my truck, and with all the tire noise. Long live the CD changer. Farewell!

Krells sound like shit and cost a fortune. A Krell sounds like a decent amp with the treble turned all the way up. Do yourself a favor, buy the Wadia and anything but a Krell. BAT, Mark Levinson, ARC, doesn't matter. They all spank Krell.
