Is This the Next PSP?
Posted by Mark Wilson at 11:15 PM on July 22, 2008
It's tough to make out much from these shots, but according to their source, they are of the next PSP (the PSP model 3000). The specs include a built-in microphone as well as an updated button set that replaces the "Home" button with a PlayStation button (to more closely resemble the PS3).
Other than those tidbits, we have little more information on the alleged update other than that it could include "mobile phone support." And from the looks of this back casing, it doesn't seem that the next PSP will be much, if any, thinner than its predecessor. [PSP China BBS via Kotaku]

Get rid of that stupid UMD and use NAND. 32Gb will do. Then allow for all games/movies to be downloaded.

No technical upgrades? Faster processor, more memory, hard drive? Meh, what a pointless re-release.

@lilaliendog: You're missing the point. People are suggesting that ALL games be downloadable. Think how much smaller the PSP would be if there was no UMD drive.

sweet, I am not hugely excited about phone support...I mean if gamers wanted a handheld that played games and made phone calls the N-Gage would have been more popular. you have to worry about carrier supprt and tech (Sim card or no?) and it would simply SUCK to have to switch carriers to accomodate a new toy...see: the reason I don't have an iPhone = AT&T

They should put a 32GB hard drive into the psp and take out the UMD slot and sell psn points so people could download their movies, games, etc. as well as putting a SDHC slot or Memory Stick Duo slot HC {-if there is a souch thing-) so people could get an extra 16GB into their psp.

Um you can already download games ... and movies ... like right now like games have been available for over a year and movies about a week now.

Aristeia: Exactly, we need two analog sticks flash , and cellphone would be great.
Also I think the built in mic isnt necessary but a nice touch. I would like to just have an AM/FM and TV tuner accessory too.

I could give a crap about thinner, I wanna see *dual analog* nubs.
As for UMD... i dunno, if they go with internal flash drive and ability to download games/movies, that'd be tight. But I doubt it.

Will it have Wi-Max? That would be cool. Screw 3G I got Wi-Max.

I know this might be hard to believe but not everyone has the internet or wireless access so doing away with a physical medium is not gonna happen. An internal hard drive or flash memory is a great idea, but not the replacement for UMD.

to me the unit itself is a decent size (although I do have monster hands). I can really see the advantages of having all downloadable content, but on the other side of the coin, there's something I'd really miss about having physical copies of my games (you know with cases and booklets). Then if they suck or I'm tired of them I can always trade them in or sell them. Also dual analog nubs! They're really shooting themselves in the foot by not adding that extra nub.

I think you guys are forgetting the problems that would come with adding a second analog stick. For one, the games made with the dual-analog controls would be unplayable on previous PSP's. Second, it would require a total internal redesign, as the power supply is where a second analog nub would go. Third, it just wouldn't be comfortable, as it would put your thumgs in an awkward position.
It's not happening til the PSP 2.

I would be happy if they would just learn to put the power button away from where you can actually power it off all the time by mistake.
They had a chance to do that with the 2000 but duh??

The size of the 2000 is fine with me. Any thiner and it might be too uncomfortable to hold for long periods. And i don't want a smaller screen. I doubt they will get rid of UMDs as they are probably much cheaper to produce than memory stick games. Plus, how will you play your existing UMD collection?
I would say, add blue tooth to the PSP and internal storage (16 GB or more would be nice). And no, I don't want it to turn into a cell phone. I don't like to commingle my phone and my media/entertainment device unless you can promise at least 12-15 hours of battery life when in use.

UMD? Whats a UMD? I use the 4.01 M33 firmware, and back up all of my UMD's to my memory stick. Makes life much easier.

Oh, wow is that it? A PS button which is basically the Home button, but with a logo (as if there weren't enough logos to remind you that you were using a Sony PSP) and a microphone? I'm sticking with my 1st Generation PSP.

sony should definitely drop the umd format and use memory sticks only. a gig mem stick only cost about $20 to $30 which is less than a game cost, and most games are less than a gig any way

Cell phone support? That sounds lame. People who by a PSP want a portable media/game device. What the hell would I do with another cell phone? Why force me to pay extra for a funtion I wont use?
OR
Make a cell version and a non cell version. That makes more sense.
