I can now click the "Check for Update" button on my iPod's "home" page and it says that a new update is available. But the button just says click to learn more or something. That page is unavailable. :'(

That's as far as I've gotten.

Hum, the link is defiantly up but look previous statements are true, the link to "buy" simply opens itunes then says the store is currently down and to wait. Guess like yesterdays bumps we must wait a little bit more, hopefully not the craziness like yesterday where it seemed the .mac service was down entirely during the transition...annoying for me cause I had photos in my gallery for my clients that I only got on line that night, arg!

UPDATE: I just chatted with an Apple "Expert" on the Apple website about this situation. He said that this is (obviously) from all of the high traffic of new activations, iPhone upgrades, and touch upgrades. He said to keep trying the link and I might be able to get squeezed in!

I do feel a kind of burn about the pricing. A penalty for being an early supporter, now, TWICE, and the second time is worse. Shouldn't people who bought the prior software update get a break since that stuff is included?

I don't regret paying for it though. That software update effectively replaced my powerbook, so, that was a lot cheaper than a new computer. Laugh if you will, but it is true. The nature of my work requires a desktop, but for a majority of the population, a laptop is their only computer. I only used my laptop for email and light web browsing. The touch replaced it.

Makes sense since it isn't showing up in the Apple Store for purchase but some people are seeing it as a new version when they check for an update. 1.1.4 didn't show up as a new version unless you had paid for it first.

The last 48 hours have been really disturbing. For a company as visible as Apple to have this many problems with a deployment, its a little surprising. I've got a TV seasons downloading on itunes right now I started it about 40 minutes ago and the first episode hasn't even finished downloading (allow simultaeous is off), so once you actually get the 2.0 download started it will probably take you 40 or so minutes to download the 200 meg file.

I spent 45 minutes on the phone with Apple support before finally reaching a Tier 2 support person who was able to chat directly with the iTunes people. As expected, she confirmed that it's the high volume of people trying to download the udpate that's causing the problem. They're currently working on putting a direct link to purchase the firmware directly in the iTunes store, but until then, the official word is "keep trying" or "try again later".

Pressed on the "update" button randomly in iTunes and suddenly got the message that Iphone 2.0 software update was available (after previous attempts told me there was no update). Downloaded the update at 9:39AM eastern time, took about six minutes to download.

Backup and restoration took a while. At 10:05am, it looked like success...was being told that the iPhone just needed to restart...it restarted....and nothing. Get a -9838 error saying the iTunes store is not available. So now I have a non-functioning iPhone...but it's been upgraded. ha ha...being an early adopter sucks.

Just downloaded the firmware via torrent on demonoid and uploaded it to my ipod. Unfortunately it did erase my installer app and 3rd party apps previously downloaded. I'm just replacing them now with apps from the appstore.

In the end my suggestion is to go with this route... it didn't cost me 10 bucks and I have it before apple will actually work properly to let you get it.

Contact apple support and they'll send you a download link once everything is working properly. If it's in your purchase history there's really nothing to be mad about. A quick email will do.

@Jingles8302: Once downloaded, plugin your iPod and open up iTunes. Shift-Click Update or Restore (depending on which one you want to do) and then navigate to the file you downloaded and click it.

Officially, I can connect to the servers, and my iPod Touch recognizes that I have a 2.0 update waiting. When I click "Learn More," it sends me back to the iPod Summary page. I think it's almost ready.

Correction... it WAS doing that... now it's saying 1.1.4 is the current version AGAIN.

Maybe if Apple was running Microsoft servers they wouldn't be having these problems. ;)

8:28 NY... it's improved on my system... now iTunes is consistently saying that there's a version 2.0 update available - but when I tell it to go to the store to buy it the software doesn't do anything.

I think the worst part of it is you see all the posts, reviews and such of these nifty awesome apps... and how much fun people are having with this stuff... but you can't even get the friggin update to work. I think I might go see a movie to occupy a couple hours... maybe that will help. I think it has gotten to the point of waiting for water to boil.

I've been waiting since about 8:30 this morning to get this damn upgrade over with. I've been teased by loading screens, update messages, and all kinds of dropped connections. Apple, you knew this was going to happen on iPhone launch day. Why not build in a contingency plan?

did anybody that downloaded the direct link that was posted above have any computer crashes?
my system got jacked up. so it was either that or the GF downloading stuff off MP3 ROCKET. any opinions? what i was getting was windows explorer has stopped working......then it was trying to restart and it just kept doin those both over and over and OVER AGAIN!! now it has finally stopped doin that but my windows gray bar like you usually see on the bottom of the screen with the windows icon has dissappeared. but i still have my vista side bar but i cannot access any programs or anything i got luck and hit the internet before it went missing. ANY HELP or advice is GEEATLY appreciated. Jingles!

Kept on trying to update, I even saved a itunes gift card since june to use it on the update. Hopefully, tomorrow i can finally play super monkey ball on my ipod touch 8 gb.

Downloaded 2.0 via the direct link (thx rahilmehta) and installed. The only problem now is that whenever I open YouTube, it tells me to connect to the Internet with itunes first. This might have something to do with my iPod never actually registering with iTunes to to server congestion. If anyone has a solution, please post it.

I found a way to download the 2.0 firmware update! All you do is put you itouch into DFU mode and restore. A way of putting it in that way is download Ziphone. A way is to go to [download.ziphone.org] and download the Mac or PC version. The plug then itouch in click the Ziphone.GUI then click 'Show All Advanced Preferences' Then Click 'DFU Mode'. Restore it and it should put the 2.0 software update on with fast downloading.
