iPhone Apps We Love: Pageonce Is Our Cheap Personal Assistant
Posted by Jason Chen at 10:20 AM on July 24, 2008
Lifehacker covered the web version of PageOnce already, but think of it is as a web portal that displays all your various utility, credit card and shopping accounts in one page for easy glance-ability. This is the exact same thing, except on your iPhone. We love it.
Enter in your logins to your Wells Fargos, your Netflixes, your Comcasts and your Diggs once and you'll be able to check them out on the go. Wondering whether that check cleared? Just tap your bank's name and it'll come up with your account info. Want to know when that movie is due from Blockbuster Online? When your next utility payment is due? Easy.
The only thing we'd potentially worry about is having all your logins and passwords held by one institution, reducing each company's security systems to a single point-of-fault held by Pageonce. On the one hand, the service is supposedly pretty safe and has stuff like 256-bit authentication, and on the other hand, we're too lazy to individually visit each web page when we want to look up stuff. This seems like a win-win. Except when you lose your phone, then it's a mad dash to delete your info from Pageonce. [Pageonce]

is there a reason for the numerous spelling errors in the app? 'forcast'? 'avarage'?
devs should at least spellcheck before they release an app

Really - I am starting to wonder about all this mobile stuff - bank accounts on phones - Pharmacy online - you name it. It doesn't seem like security has really been thought through on a lot of this stuff. I see people ahead securing stuff after the fact. Whoops!

@TheSonOfKrypton: You sound like Lucius from the Dark Knight when he was referring to all that cell phone triangulation crap.
I do like how this site and Mint.com doesnt ask you for your personal info i.e. name, address, phone number and etc. Even with all the login info given to the site a person is limited in what they can do. Its not like I gave the site my CC# info. What are they gonna do login to my PNC Bank site and themselves as a payee and send themselves a check through online bill pay? They could ask for an increase on Bank of America credit card account. A lot of high level crap you want to do on your accounts have to be done over the phone where the company's rep ask for much more info like your SSN. On the surface it seems like they have access to alot but when you dig deep its not.

I downloaded this app to my phone, opened it, and had exactly that go thru my mind. That is far too much power for one source to hold. I deleted this shit with a QUICKNESS.

@pdditty:
Somebody could log into your PayPal and send their own account money from your checking account or through your credit card.
They could also create Payees in your checking account and cut e checks. But this isn't ideal since you'd have their name and address.

Even if their security would be same grade as banks, it's completely besides the point. The fact is that you are handing out your bank and other authentication information to 3rd party you don't know anything about. Something about that just rubs me the wrong way...

I prefer the apps on Windows Mobile phones like eWallet [www.iliumsoft.com] . Very secure, local password and local storage. I wonder if Apple will ever open up the iPhone for apps like that.

@TheSonOfKrypton: You're being facetious, aren't you? If you think handing over your bank and credit card account passwords is not biggie, post them here and let's see what happens. C'mon, try it.
Maybe not a lot you can do on the credit card sites as I think through mine, but you could wreak some serious damage if you had my bank account logins and passwords; same for my broker accounts. Electronic transfers to illicit accounts set up to receive money. Bill-pay checks to fake names at shill's addressed to cash at those check cashing places, etc.
I'd just rather use something like 1Password and have to look up my passwords if I happen to forget them.

Great comments, however I assume that many reviewers didn't have a chance to check Pageonce security features before posting their review. Pageonce offers amongst other, the following - Self destruct. If someone took your phone or you cant find it, you can login to www.pageonce.com and disable Pageonce on your iPhone. - Pageonce does not enable you to login to financial institutions. This is a view only There are more security measures which are explained on the site. Please take time to review those as Pageonce invested enormous effort around security and privacy. Best regards, The Pageonce support team

My dad downloaded this little app and added his personal info for linked in and ebay, and by complete surprise his accounts got highjacked so my advice to you is to not download that app since it seems that there's somekind of security weakness somewhere. Be extremely aware, Tez

The iPhone works on PCs as well, and so does the internet too, it's pretty cool, you should check it out.

This software sounds like an absolutely terrible idea. It's bad enough that the iPhone doesn't have any disk encryption, but trusting one company with all of your login information is asking for a disaster.
Seriously, why do people even need stuff like this? How about you wait until you get home to check your cable bill.
And yes, I do have an iPhone.

@DeliaAcacallis: Thanks for joining the conversation and setting the record straight. You know very few actually read the links and check the apps before spouting off here (and I'm as guilty of it as anyone else). It's just the nature of the internet and our Cliffs Notes mentality through college. Why read the whole story when you can get someone else's summation of it? ;-)

No effing way. Uh uh, not gonna happen. I have a hard enough time with the concept of buying stuff online (at least my Visa has good insurance) but online banking, bill pay, etc is just ripe for getting hacked. As if it hasn't happened already to some people. ID theft is on the uprise, not the other way around. Call me paranoid, but I'm even shredding any mail that has my personal info on it. Putting all my accounts/passwords onto one internet site, while it may seem convenient for now, will seem a lot less so when you get that little white envelope in the mail and open it only to read: "Sorry sucker we've had our site hacked and now all your acct/pw info is in the hands of highly efficient criminals who have already effed up all your bank accts, etc etc etc haha hahha haha eff you buddy bye."
