iPhone Apps We Like: Pandora
Posted by Benny Goldman at 9:00 PM on July 18, 2008
Pandora for the iPhone is as easy to use as the website. Just type an artist you want to hear, it will build a radio station of similar songs and broadcast them in FMish-quality. The picks are usually accurate, but the science behind picking them is hilarious: The app explained that I have a soft spot for "boastin' lyrics" and "headnodic beats". Pandora works well over Wi-Fi, 3G, and even EDGE.
Our own Chris said he played it over EDGE while driving around Southern California and didn't lose signal once. Other pros include album art and allowing you to skip, bookmark and thumbs up/down tracks for better accuracy. While all of these features make Pandora a great app, just thinking about it makes my battery drain. [iPhone App Marathon]

Pandora is now blocked to non US IP addresses. I assume this is the same for the iphone app but even registering requires a US IP address.

I think the bigger news here is which one of you guys are listening to "Still Fly" - Big Timers and "Like a Pimp" - David Banner.

It worked well for me over EDGE, while riding my bicycle. Every once in a while, there was a brief pause between songs.

Unfortunately, it is appearing that although Pandora runs well over 3G, 3G does not run well over AT&T. At least that hasn't been my New York experience. Too many 3G-less spots (like my office).

It does work like a charm over Edge; it's nice to have streaming Internet radio like this in my car. That said, it's in mono (WTF?) for some strange reason - even over WiFi and 3G. :-(

I think it's a great app, but my Edge reception is crap. Even with full signal, it skips out every twenty seconds or so.
Maybe Fairfax just has lousy towers or sumptin.

@Chimera: You wear it while mowing your lawn? You're missing out on the blood-curdling scream action when you go over the bunny hutch with your Lawn Boy. It's really not to be missed - I give it two thumbs up!
@OMG! Ponies!: Your boss called and wants to know what piece of current billable litigation requires you to listen to your iPhone at the office. Repetitive Stress Injury from all the headnoddin'? Ok. That works.

Used it yesterday driving through LA - 3G streaming audio to the iPhone, played through the car stereo system at 80 mph - no problem.
Very neat App and a great service from Pandora.

pandora streams to the ipod in MONO. MONO. this bothers me greatly, as music is mixed in STEREO.
pandora for the iphone/ipod touch WOULD be a great app otherwise; i just can't see listening to monaural sound in earbuds...it's 2008!
disappointing...

3G's running great in Canada.
I know about a year or two ago Pandora regretfully informed international users that their service (due to copyright restrictions) cannot be provided outside of the US - same is true for iPhone, what a piss off. I really enjoyed their service.. I'd be willing to pay a one time registration fee to use it here in Canada.

Lupe Fiasco isn't bad.
And yeah, the lack of Pandora in Canada is too bad. But at least we have last.fm, which I have been enjoying thoroughly so far.
For those who have used both - which is honestly better, Pandora or Last.fm?

Pandora on my iPhone is quickly replacing Sirius in my car. I'm amazed how well it works.
Pandora freezes up though when using a wifi signal that comes and goes.

I loaded this on my iPod Touch and forgot about it until I was in the gym yesterday (gym has wifi). What a perfect solution for a workout! I have thousands of songs on my iPod, but I still get tired of hearing the same songs. Pandora started flawlessly and streamed my QuickMix while I lifted weights. I loved hearing new music, and even bookmarked a new artist I hadn't heard before.
I still wish uSirius would become a legit app - but this is a great consolation prize.

I love Pandora, but they haven't made a WinMo app yet. The Pandora application on the iPhone is a beaut, and I'd love to give it a spin on WinMo.
I don't know why it's take so long for Pandora to hit mobile. Hopefully, they're going to be releasing a WinMo application sometime soon as well. I listen to Pandora a lot, and internet radio has never been better.
Can't wait to check it out on my Windows Mobile phone.

I like Pandora, but it's definitely a strange case of one of those launch apps that doesn't always work well with the 'rushed' 2.0, final-spec firmware (not the one we all loaded up the day before). It periodically does weird things with the volume control and locks up the phone completely. I think the music selection at Last.fm is better, too. There are quite a few artists I like that have really diverse catalogs and Pandora only tracks one of the artist's albums so you get a very incomplete picture of 'like music'. It's cool, but a work in progress.
I just wish Apple would hurry up fixing the new firmware. Just like the 360 dashboard, it started out really zippy, but now it's relatively bogged down and bloated. Apple, please refine the software and make it run the way it used to.

Haha - been rocking Pandora mobile for a while now - didn't even notice it was mono - is that confirmed? Maybe this is the initial release to iron out bugs and a stereo version will follow.

Oh yeah, right on the money honey. I downloaded this one first thing when the app store went up and within 20 minutes I was really starting to geek out. I type in one of my favorite funk bands, and it starts playing a bunch of great new stuff I've never heard before--it sounds fairly good and it does NOT skip!! Wow! And all over the edge network!? Welcome to the future everyone! Pandora rocks the house. I will be listening to it about every day at work I think. Yeah, it does suck up some juice from the battery, especially with me turning the screen on to check the artist each time the track changes, but hey, it's not that bad. I can listen all day at work and not deplete the battery.
So you can stream audio over the edge.... and do it pretty effectively apparently. Now what would happen if you took this idea and combined with with the iTunes remote app? Stream your own music library from at home to ANYWHERE want?! It would be like a slingbox but for audio. Now THAT is the next shit!! I mean I doubt Apple would ever allow such an app to be made, because then who would ever buy a big iPod? There would be no point to having large storage capacity anymore, if you could stream your home library from anywhere. But maybe some clever 3rd party dev could do it.... I have not jailbroken my iphone before, but THAT would make me do it in a heartbeat. Anyone out there with the skills to make this app would be a hero to us all. =)

@virtualmatt:
from pandora (when i complained about mono streaming to the ipod):
We decided to stream to the iPhone in mono so that we could get a better bit rate over the stream. We feel that the current format is the best compromise between fidelity and the amount of data that can stream over the iPhone. In the future this may change, but I hope you can enjoy the format for now!

I deleted Pandora the instant I created a "channel" or "playlist" (or whatever they call them) by accident (typed in the wrong artists' name) and I couldn't delete it. WTF? There's no remove channel option? GHEY.

@falandil:
a lot of records in the sixties were released in mono AND stereo versions (i guess a lot of people had mono record players).
but EVERYTHING (practically) has been mixed in stereo since the '60's; why suffer thru a mono playback?
last.fm seems infinitely better imho

@fisherKing: Just last weekend, I was listening to a mono mix of an album from the sixties on my iPod. It really isn't that bad. Though I have yet to figure out why they decided to release the album in mono when it was originally in stereo.
(For the record, it was Pink Floyd's Piper At The Gate of Dawn.)
