iPhone Apps We Like: Aurora Feint The Beginning
Posted by Benny Goldman at 1:00 PM on July 18, 2008
Aurora Feint is the first strategy/MMO game that I've played on any system for more than five minutes, and I'm addicted. The main focus is a Bejeweled-like game of matching tiles, and you earn points and power to increase your abilities. You rotate the phone to get all the tiles to line up, which makes it super challenging.
The points are used on blueprints and magicbooks, just timed versions of the mining game. They are supposed to enhance your power, but so far I haven't noticed any difference. Still, the game is fun and I'm hooked.
As the name implies, this is just the beginning of a complete iPhone MMO, and I'm looking forward to what games and interactive features will be added next. [App Marathon]

I can't figure out what is so great about this game. And where is this MMO? All I've been able to do is slide around some tiles and watch them blow up. How is this addictive? And going to the "store" doesn't seem to change anything.

It's the Doom end of level map! ...from the Olden Days. I guess instead of bullet sounds it'd have arrow whooshes or sword clangs.

I played it launch day and it seemed bland to me, why is it called an MMO?

@poppy: then you sir are a lamer if you think shaking a cow on your phone is better. its a damn PHONE!!! what do you expect WoW? ya its basically a puzzle game. and as we have both said updates come tomorrow that will allow you to use the items that you have crafted from completing the puzzles. if you want a "real" MMO get on your fucking computer.

@michaelwiggins: So MMO just means I can see how good other people are at sliding tiles around and blowing them up? This is a one trick pony. Match the symbols, they blow up. Building a blueprint does nothing. Nothing changes. You just match up fucking tiles. Where is the fun in this? That cow tossing game is more interesting than this.

I didn't notice a difference from upping levels at first, but I'm like 4/8 on every skill and I'm feel like the distribution of spawning tiles is more efficient, as in, I have to move less to get them close to each other, and altogether a given mineral seems to spawn closer to others of its type. Maybe I'm hallucinating, which in light of...things... wouldn't be unlikely...but still.
As for the MMO naysayers, "Massively Multiplayer Online"; Well it's 2/3 right, in a sense that you have a group of friends that you can interact with...to the extent of seeing their skills. I suggest you all go to the AuroraFeint site/forum and start an account (while you can get your name of choice :P), because there is lots of info there about future updates (one is in the works), as well as a thread for requests/suggestions for add-ons. Like the App description says, this is just the "Beginning" to a big MMO, so I expect they will make PvP challenges via wifi, and more- or rather any- communication with friends.

This game is really pretty excellent. I checked it out on launch day, and I was realised surprised by the quality. Especially given the price point. Sure, it's not World of Warcraft-- or even Puzzle Quest, necessarily-- but it's got top-notch music, clean visuals, and a surprisingly deep puzzle mechanic. I'm definitely a fan.

I don't think what we see now is the MMO part. A lot of you are complaining and asking how it's an MMO when you pretty much answered your own questions already. This seems to be the stage where the developers are allowing the users to harness their abilities and strengthen their characters so that when the MMO game comes out, your characters don't end up as weaklings and losers.
If you're on the main map, try tapping the small arrow on the top left and you'll have an idea of what'll be in store in the future. There are parties, weapons, etc. OF COURSE you can't use weapons on the mining game, DOH. Common sense, anyone?

Why not post one message with all the "iPhone Apps we like" rather than a post a day with the newest piece of software you'll be removing from your iPhone after the novelty has worn off?

Does anyone else have trouble viewing the item descriptions? The text is off-set so far to the right that you can't read it.

So I'm addicted to this game as well and hit up the app makers forum... apparently all of the stuff that you build isnt working correctly. You should be able to apply the items you create to your character so that it will affect the way the game plays. If you notice there are screens where it looks like you can apply up to three different items to your character
They said they are just waiting on apple to approve the game update. So we should have it by sometime next week hopefully.
It will also fix text running off the screen.

It's best to think of this game, in its current state, as Puzzle Quest Beta. As Graphx said, this game SHOULD be getting an update soon, which will fix a lot of the current bugs.
Fun Puzzle/RPG game. Though I really wish the devs would have held off on releasing apps that weren't polished up yet.
But hell, it's free...so nothing to really complain about.

@majortom1029: I mean there is a bug that stops you from using your item and skills. beg apple to release the fix.

The problem is that there is a big tyhat has a fix but apple is very slow pushing out the updates.
You are supposed to be able to use items and stuff but the bug stops that.
Their is a fix but you have to beg for the very slow apple to push it out.

I think the only thing it has going for it currently is it looks good and it's free. Its got nothing on Puzzle Quest in terms of gameplay, its just a puzzle game with a character leveling system - thats all. No world map, no story, no activatable 'skills', no opponents, no real tactics. Its not a strategy game, and I think it barely qualifies as a 'roleplaying' game at this point as well. To top it off its super repetitive, and pretty easy until you get high enough the board is scrolling at an insane rate.
Don't get me wrong, I wish them the best, and I think the game looks beautiful - but I don't think its gameplay has what it takes to last the test of time. Certain personalities will get hooked on it due strictly to the character leveling mechanic (must.. get.. another.. level..), but most people I know that played it (who also played the hell out of Puzzle Quest) stopped after a week.
But, being free, you can't go wrong downloaded it and trying it for yourself.

if you like this game you should check out the original on the snes, tetris attack. which came out about 10 years ago.
other incarnations, N64 super puzzle league with a pokemon theme, and most recently on the ds, planet puzzle league.
i was pleasantly surprised with this version of the game, but it's kinda easy with all the flipping, it makes matching too easy. i'd love to see items smaller so it could take advantage of a taller screen to have bigger chain combos.

Joe23521 read what i posted the creator said there was a bug preventing you from using it. he fixed it but is waiting for apple to push the update out. There are articles all over the place that state apples review practice to push these out is very slow and tedious.

I can't figure out the uses and benefits of the skills I gain from solving blueprints. Nothings seems any different as far as game play goes.
Also, I wish there would be a "Bejeweled" mode of game play, where you don't need to rotate the screen to move the pieces.
That said, this is still the best free game in the App Store hands down. In fact, it's too good to be free. Graphics, music, and sound f/x are amazing.

@Bael: As far as I know, there was never any mention of "roleplaying". If you read the game description on iTunes, it says MMO and not MMORPG.. So I wonder what makes Gizmodo say that it's a roleplaying game... I guess coz you have some sort of character with weapons, armor, and skills.. but umm.. all you do is mine stuff. so yeah.
though i really think there's more to it than just this bejeweled game.. there might be some kind of sequel that hopefully has something more than just mining. otherwise, this would get kinda boring.
