iPhone App Contest Reminder
Posted by Jason Chen at 7:20 AM on July 10, 2008
Speaking of really cool iPhone apps, here's one of the submissions we've gotten for our iPhone App Contest. It's called Instinctiv Shuffle, and it "learns from your skipping patterns and plays what you want to hear." We haven't tested it out for ourselves in any extent, but current users of it (it's a jailbreak application) seem to really like it. During random shuffle, users skip on average every 2 songs, but in Instinctiv Shuffle, they only skip every 14 songs. Think your app is cooler? Send it on in to our contest. [Instinctiv]

This is exactly why I stopped using an MP3 player loaded with thousands of songs, I hated looking for the ones I liked and I'm too lazy to create playlists. If this really works it will be great.

@duckballs: You forgot about capitalizing the second letter.

Stupid App trying to be cool by taking out the lower case "e". Dosn't it know the cool thing to do was to add a lower case letter to the front.

I've wanted my iPod to learn what mood I'm in since I first had it.
Can someone port this to the iPod video? I gues you'll also have to figure out how to cram a more flexible processor in there as well.
Thanks in advance.

Does it really integrate with the existing iPod app?

That sounds amazing, but as another user asked, is it more of a plugin for the existing iPod app? And will this be released into the official app store?

An application like this was made years ago; oddly enough by Facebook creator Mark Zukerberg. Instead of add on functionality it was actually a full blown MP3 Player program called Synapse AI. The feature in the software was called "The Brain", like this app it was able to save metrics of your personal listen style and create custom playlists for you. The software also had some really cool mapping functionality where you could graphically connect the songs you wanted to listen to with connector lines. The original website doesn't exist anymore but I found a link to a download page on Softpedia.

Unfortunately, this won't work in the official App Store as it is now - official Apps can't do ANYTHING with the music playlist. The most an App can do is set itself up to not stop music that's already playing.

I have been using it on my touch, yes it just runs with the standard player app. You launch it in the background and then just use the standard ipod music player. So far I can say it appears to work as advertised and is damn slick.
Also for those of you who are concerned there is a simple slider in the app to deactivate it if you want to shuffle in the standard way.
Love it.

I have been waiting for something like this for years. Hopefully it is done right. My concept for this kind of "smart shuffle" has always included a sort of bump up or down - similar to Pandora's thumbs up/down - so that you can really push a song out of the playlist, or bring something back that you've skipped a lot in the past.

@itchytooth: Yup, our shuffle is completely integrated with the iPhone/iPod Touch. It replaces the random shuffle feature on your iPod. Just turn it on, and then start listening.
Thanks Gizmodo for the post!
