iPhone 3G Reviews Are In
Posted by Jason Chen at 11:13 AM on July 9, 2008
The first iPhone 3G reviews have just hit. Walt Mossberg of the WSJ has been testing it "for a couple of weeks" and sees that surfing on the faster 3G is between three and five times the speed of the original iPhone. However, Moss found that browsing on the 3G network drained his battery much faster than browsing on the original. Externally, he says the speaker was "much louder" (YES!) for both music and speakerphone, but otherwise pretty much the same as the original. One bug/feature he ran into was that you can only sync your calendar and contacts with either Exchange or your personal accounts, not both.
In Mossberg's own battery tests, he got 4 hours and 27 minutes (short of 5 hours) of talk time, which is three hours less than his test on the original iPhone. Using 3G, he got 5 hours and 49 minutes, which is slightly better than Apple's own claim. He couldn't test any apps on his iPhone 3G, but did on his old iPhone—they worked pretty much as advertised. He concludes with pretty much what we've all known: it's slightly more expensive on AT&T due to the higher price plan, but satisfies people who really need that 3G speed. What's weird is that Mossberg didn't test the GPS functionality at all, so we're left wondering how that is. [All Things D]

@thechansen: No dude, I read that wrong earlier, as you are doing now as well. The new iPhone has improved talk time over the 1st gen iPhone on EDGE. 10 hours of talk time as opposed to 8 hours on the 1st gen iPhone. The sucky talk time comes with 3G on.

@tmntjmc: you must have missed the not:apple link posted right on the homepage. Thank you for the insightful comment.
I find it weird that the 2G radio gets less talk time than the 1st gen iPhone. You would think that it would be, well, the same. I see no reason why EDGE voice on the 3g iPhone wouldn't last that long but I'll wait to see what is going on first hand. I obviously haven't touched a 3g iPhone yet but wouldn't exchange have an effect on that, since the data connection is always somewhat active? I have no experince with exchange so correct me if I'm wrong.

@TheSonOfKrypton: I agree that saying "using 3G" to mean browsing the internet over the 3G network is a bit confusing. Actually, Walt doesn't indicate what he was doing on the internet, so he could have been streaming Orb media or reading a novel - not very clear either.

@ChristianD: You, sir, fail at life. Walt didn't say the bug was a feature. No. Gizmodo phrased it that way. Is he even capable of giving Apple anything other than an excellent grade. Just asking, but has he ever even criticised any decision they've ever made. Since when is a bug a feature. There are a lot of reviewers that I respect for their best efforts at being impartial, unfortunately, he isn't one of them.

Video Capture and Voice Command (allows voice dialing and voice navigation through apps/menus) will be available through the app store by third party developers. I'm currently using both on an unlocked iPhone through installer.app. Neither application are free but are offered as a trial/demo. I'd still like to see an easy to use app that enables Bluetooth DUN and for Apple to provide a software update to enable Bluetooth AD2P (Stereo Bluetooth). As well for Apple to update App Store to show the actual file size of the applications prior to downloading. After all not every carrier is as generous as AT&T or O2 to provide their customers with unlimited data ;)

Ed Baig doesn't know too much, he wants Flash, Java and WMV support for the NEXT GENERATION of iphone? Can someone please tell him that those are softwares and can be installed in this generation of the iphone. As a matter a fact, Adobe already have the Flash running on the iphone 2.0 update, all they need now is a special agreement from Apple since the agreement doesn't allow anyone to make plugins or something like that. But yes they made a Flash Version for the iphone already. I'm sure they are already talking to Apple to allow it. They better

Sorry Ed Baig, I don't think we'll ever see an Apple product with expandable memory. To me, it's not a big deal, but it would also be nice.
I guess if you don't have the 3G in your area, it kinda defeats the purpose of having an iPhone revolving around the fact that it is 3G capable.

Walt also said:
"Third-party software: If things go as Apple hopes, third-party software could be the biggest attraction to the new iPhone 3G, and to upgraded older iPhones. By some estimates, there will be hundreds of these programs, some free and some paid, almost immediately."
Hopefully uSirius will be available without jailbreaking the iPhone and or iTouch.

@Hyperplasia: The USA Today review elaborates that you can sync personal and Exchange contacts and calendars to one iPhone IF you have MobileMe. From the sidebar: "to use Exchange and keep a separate personal calendar or contact list on the iPhone, you will need to use Apple's new $100-a-year MobileMe service."
That really does sort of suck. If it's possible, let everyone do it. Also, where's the push Gmail? Get to it, guys!

Sounds interesting but the service plans in mexico were finally revealed and what we got of monthly bandwidth is 150 MB for around 80 bucks a month wich makes it almost imposibble for using it's real 3G capabilities. But you can always go for unlimited data wich cost $50 more.
Oh and btw if you go for the $80 plan the 16 Gb iPhone costs $200 and the 8GB is $85.

I have two questions I haven't seen anyone cover yet.
1. Has the pathetic vibrate mode been improved? I mean does the 3G actually vibrate now or does it still simulate motion?
2. I read that the speaker works better (aka clearer and louder for calls) but does that translate into louder ringing? Not that I like to be bothered by a ringing phone, but that does play a part in me knowing when to answer it.

The way I read it, and corrcet me if I am wrong, is that you can sync echange and your personal email at the same time, you just cannot sync your contacts and calander from exchange and your personal account at the same time. If that's the case, It makes sense to me, the two accounts would conflict on which contacts and calendar to use, and would constantly be overwriting each other. Am I missing something?

I could get past the things the iPhone lacks, because none of them matter that much to me. I never use the video recording on my Mogul, I don't really ever do MMS since I have e-mail on the phone, I don't need more than 2MP camera, because its a damn phone, and copy and paste sucks to be missing, but im sure someone will fix it.
What I can't get past is that I would have to go from my $35 a month 500 minute, unlimited data, unlimited text, unlimited everything, and phone insurance, plan to a minimum $85 plan just to use the phone and have text messages and all that.
I will be hoping that they release a 32GB one by the end of the year, and AT&T comes out with better plans.
Or even better, Google releases the Android on some nice spec phones, and its as good as or better than the iPhone OS, and they have it on Sprint, and also, end of the year would be just great.

I am really not happy with the direction cell phones may be turning. Buying applications for simple things that SHOULD be included seem like just another way to F over the customer once again and put in some $$$$ to the pockets of the companies. Even if it is another $5 application for copy and paste....seriously. WTF. It should have been there in the first place. Just a lousy stunt to pull on customers in my opinion.

@NfMoto: Why would that make sense? It makes no sense. It's so easy to implement. Having multiple calendars, (business, personal) is a big deal. Some people like to classify their appointments that way. Not to mention it's nice having <insert favorite sports team>'s schedule. Having business and personal contacts, and/or caller groups is something almost every single one of my phones has had.
Oh yeah, that's right. Someone in Cupertino thinks they know what's best for everyone. Although, it likely has more to do with getting that someone's hands deeper into your back pocket. And, that statement explains every detail that has been "left out": AD2P, Cut&Paste, user serviceable battery, expansion card slots, yadda, yadda yadda.
The situation is magnified with the iPod Touch.
The only thing the iPhone does exceptionally well is display web pages. Mobile Safari IS the iPhone's killer app. I don't even find it feature complete, but it's far and away the most useful feature. The iPhone also does a lot of things well. But, for each of those things, there is another that it is woefully substandard, or even lacking.
It's nice to see a set of comments that isn't blinded by the hype.
I might get one. But, only because, I'm in the market for a new phone, and I'm already an AT&T customer.

It is clear Apple is the most excited about the iPhone's App Store, "why you say so?" I hear you ask! Well they see dollar signs written all over it :)
If you look closely, both Apple and Google are looking forward to making their platforms the new Linux. It is all about community and universalism. But Apple is in it with a tight grip! Google's plan is more vague at this point.
Walt Mossberg hit it on right the nail, when he spoke of "hidden costs" Apple and ATT have implemented a trickier profit model, where their gains come from higher priced data plans and the App Store.

@Modano: Can't say I'm surprised that they're requiring mobileme for personal data sync if you use exchange. So if I want to use the new free feature, I have to pay to continue to use the old free feature. Typical.
I happen to have .mac/mobileme, so this limitation won't affect me, but I can't think of any reason for imposing this limitation (besides the obvious one). There is no technical reason that synching with two clouds is any more difficult or complex than synching with one cloud and periodic synching with another computer.
The one thing my old palm always did right was two way sync of calendars and contacts between multiple computers with no data loss or duplication. That was in 1998, ten years ago. In fact, I continued to use my palm for this function long after I stopped using it otherwise because apple never got isync right, and still hasn't.

@PHILZY21: But that's just smart buying/research. Different technologies will be of different worth in different areas at different times.
For example, I live in Manhattan and DirectTV could create a system with 400 HD channels, HD DVR, and on-demand HD movies while doubling as a next generation Roomba and it wouldn't do me a lick of good.
The question is whether this is something that will eventually bring you a benefit, either directly through the product or indirectly through a competitor or another generation. In this case the answer is likely yes.

No word on whether we can just swap out sim cards from our current 3g phones?

The back is plastic! I love the substantial feel of the aluminium in my hand. LOL. This is a very big minus for me. Anyone else?

Would love to know how many shares of AAPL each reviewer owns. I can't remember when Mossberg did not recommend an Apple product, no matter how inferior it was to superior products.

Well, I am an iPhone owner and still a little unsure. I would love a shiny new phone, don't get me wrong, and frankly the price for the upgrade is not to horrible or frightening... however, at the risk of sounding like a broken record:
COPY/PASTE
MMS
VID RECORD
I could even live without flash and stereo bluetooth for a bit (with the new Jack I can do away with all these god-awful adaptors that always suck)... it's like brand new headphones!

@92BuickLeSabre
You are correct, however I currently have a 16gb iPhone and want to upgrade yet I cant justify spending another $300 after I just spend $500 in February without the instant gratification of 3g. I guess I am just impaitent and want it now.

Hi-
If the 2.0 firmware doesn't tell you how long a call was, I'm going to go fucking nuts!!!!!
