@peteH: @livinzlife: It's only slightly thicker than the first generation at its center (one-hundredth of an inch, I believe), but the redesigned, more tapered form-factor should make it feel much better in your hand.

Yeah, I have to say that the initial impressions-- that the thing seemed thinner, even though it's technically bigger, must've been proffered by a bunch of crack addicts. This thing looks like a fucking whale next to the original model.

You're just like my first-gen iPhone, just with a giant fat ass. Poor iPhone 3G. I want you so bad, but you're so much uglier than my first-gen model! What to do?

@iSliceAndiDiceandiNeverGoDull: I think that if you used a fine enough grit, you could actually give it a nice texture. Maybe not "matte", but at least "brushed". I've seen people do this to the back of iPods. Sand blasting would work well, if you had access to the equipment.

There are two things I hate about the 3G. The back is curved and completely made from plastic. I understand that it's better for reception but it just looks cheap. For that matter I'd rather have the old iPhone. Fortunately these things don't bother me enough to not buy the iPhone 3G :)

These are disappointing. The original model looks better to me, besides being thinner and more aesthetic, the old screen appears more "edge to edge", though I think this is probably just illusion. 3G will make it all worth it, it's just too bad we couldn't have everything.
