iPhone 2.0 Tips: Safari Now Plays Embedded YouTube Clips
Posted by Matt Hickey at 11:00 AM on July 16, 2008
Much like the way Safari has handled Quicktime videos on former versions of the firmware, the new 2.0 release now allows you to watch embedded YouTube content with your iPhone or iPod Touch, albeit via the YouTube app. Navigate to a page with embedded YouTube content and press play, then watch as Safari hands off the video duties to the YouTube player which then plays the video in H.264. Really, that's better than watching it embedded, and makes the handheld Web browsing world that much closer to its desktop rival.

Nice, now all we need is actual flash and then that would make the iphone really awesome.

@sofong: Yes, the point was that you can watch it as embedded file now.

@Leonard Nimrod: It shows them embedded, but it still launches the separate Youtube app to watch them.
@Heffae: I just tried it on 2.0 and it bounced me back to the web page afterward.

I don't know when that was added but my 1.1.4 does this. Though when it's done playing the video I believe it exits to the youtube app and not back to the webpage.

... that are hosted on YouTube.
All the Revver, Vimeo, and Gizmodo-cached videos will still give you enough blue bricks to build a Lego Smurf army.

Do people really give a crap about watching You Tube videos on their iPhone? I'm still pissed that I can't remove that stupid icon from my home screen. Edge took so long that I got bored after the first 4 minutes of waiting for a clip to download...

Anyone know if the upgrade to 2.0 will delete your SMS threaded messages? I have a few threads that I need to refer to and I'm hesitant to upgrade if it'll delete my threads...

@anti-hello-kitty: Be sure to sync to get a current backup before the upgrade.
My phone's gone through every software update including 2.0, been jailbroken, restored, updated, regressed and jailbroken again at least five times, and I've got SMS threads going back over a year.

This is not new. The older firmware versions did this too. It is great. I do wish we could stream Flash and WMVs, then this mobile browser would almost be limitless.
