Icare Motorcycle Actually Doesn't Give a $@&* About Anything
Posted by Mark Wilson at 12:25 AM on July 18, 2008
While most of us are adolescently psyched to see the Batman bike in the Dark Knight, we're aware of the crude reality that even trained stuntmen couldn't ride the thing without falling off. But it's OK, because we've found a suitable superhero replacement. Inspired by the lightcycles from TRON, France-based Enzyme Design has created the Icare concept. Two wheels powered by a 6-cylinder 1.8L Honda engine, it's the stuff of pure future fantasy.

The good news is that Enzyme's last concept actually went into production (the Atomo V1000), so the Icare has a shot of making it to the marketplace. Of course, that doesn't mean you can actually afford it. But two words of advice: second mortgage. [UGO and Enzyme Design via Core77]

@junyo: @graphx:
Lies I tell you! Lies! Pure anti-cape propaganda!
Look at Batman. Look at Superman. They've been rockin their capes for years! You just have to make sure you're fully trained for cape use, in all possible scenarios. Scenarios such as flying beside a plane, lifting a train off the tracks, or waiting in line with rabid Apple fanbois for an iPhone 3G....like the Woz.
Woz wears a cape right?

The nose obviously takes it's design cues from a machine age steam train:

which is kinda cool, but honestly, I'm more concerned with the ass burn I'd get from the twin mufflers situated right behind the seat...

I hope it comes with asbestos boots, those pipes look ready to burn some ankles.
Motorcycles have done well with the form-follows-function school of design. Big plastic pieces went out with the 80s. Those wheels look absurd.

They need to stop making bikes that you ride in this position it's just not very practical, we need a more reclined seat, similar to the Akira bike.

Powerplant appears to be the rather long-in-the-tooth Goldwing 1800 engine. Honda's been using this same design since '99. Granted, it's a good motor, but why do "designers" always tend to push size over substance?
Dammit, I don't need 400 pounds of motor between my legs.
It'll just end up crushing my legs beyond surgical repair when that dumbass "doesn't see me" and attempts to drive her SUV directly over me in traffic.

@twilight-arc: Actually you might be surprised how un-aerodynamic even the average sports bike is. They get there amazing speed and acceleration from the fact those engines can put out insane amounts of power. Which leads me too... a six-cylinder engine?? That's pure tiny-penis therapy right there.
Looks hot though.

@treetop1000: it works, it's reliable, it's powerful.
the engine is a sensible choice, from a design perspective. Besides, 99 isn't long in the tooth, the 500cc plant in the kawi ninja 500 is much older, the 250cc plant in the honda rebel is older still.

That looks sexy. I would be even happier if the last concept they had wasnt so outrageously different. They probably know that if they made this that there would be a great deal of motorcycle enthusiasts going crazy over this thing and making it a exclusive model with a exclusive amount in circulation would make them a pretty penny.

bikes, by and large, are as aero as a 4x8 piece of plywood. erik buell's first design, was conceived using the classic teardrop shape, not for the style, but to make up for the lack of grunt in the old ironhead sportster motors that he had acquired from harley.

Hello_Newman
Posted 1:37 PM 18/7/08
Oh it's not slow, the Goldwing engine makes 124ft lb. of torque and having been an 04 Goldwing owner, this will move easily with that engine. With a K&N air filter it really moves above 3,000rpm, probably a 10 percent power increase from what I could tell after installing one. I'm sure this weighs less than a full dress Goldwing, and those do low 12 second quarter miles (have seen stock Goldwings do 12.29's), so you can only guess what this thing can do.

Yeah, but the last prototype seemed a little too typical a bike! Makes me wonder how well you could steer it. As for capes, can't tell if this thing's worthy of the Edna Seal of Approval. Can't see where the body ends and the wheel begins!

I want the handle bars, all lights, foot pedals, and pegs to be completely hidden when parked.
Just walk up to it, and everything reveals itself.
