How To: Me.com Mail Fully Working, Set It Up Now
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 9:55 PM on July 7, 2008
Both sending and receiving of me.com mails is working now. Following a tip by reader Gizmodo reader Tom, we have tested this with our own Mac.com accounts. It works perfectly, both for sending and receiving. Setting it up is very easy:

1. Go to your mail program.
2. Create new account.
3. For the user name, use your current .mac account (in my case: jesusdiaz)
4. For the incoming server select IMAP and enter mail.me.com
5. Use your current .mac password.
6. For the SMTP (outgoing) server enter smtp.me.com
7. Use your current .mac password.
Done.

Quick question - if I setup a new account (mail.me.com) will I receive a duplicate eMail on my .mac account? I want to continue using my .mac address. Is there any added benefit to using me.com?

@littleSavage: It's the same account. Any email sent to ABC@me.com can be received at ABC@mac.com. I just tested with mine and it works.

quick question: why did you set it up as an IMAP account? I thought these were PUSH accounts now, do they still only use IMAP? Or is that just the only way to set it up with Apple Mail currently?

Is there any advantage to this right now if you're not using an iPhone? My email client is already checking my .mac account.

@richard8a: Oh. I thought it was possible. Don't Blackberry servers push outside mail accounts? I guess I imagined that MobileMe could just sit there checking your Gmail constantly and pushing mail when it found any. Oh well, another reason for me to not want MobileMe.

@reykjavik: wow. hilarious. don't quit your day job, if you actually have one.
@ideaman2020: same way. set up your email client with the same settings, assuming you have a .mac/me account and weren't just trying to be a jackhole.

Works fine on my iPhone, email pushed rather quickly... :)

@itchytooth: That makes no sense. MobileMe messages will get Pushed. Gmail does not currently get pushed. But, if you forward your Gmail to MobileMe, by the time it reaches MobileMe it will get Pushed. But by that time, you probably will have received it as usual, anyway.

How do I get this to work on my Windows XP computer?

@itchytooth: I didn't mean to sound brash about it, but yes, you are now correct. Think of it as a bottle-neck effect. MobileMe has push for whatever comes to it. But, if your mail from Gmail only gets to MobileMe as fast as it would get to Gmail, you're still limited by that Gmail speed. Granted, Gmail is still pretty quick on getting new messages, but it's not technically "push" quick.
