Hover Boards, Holy Grails and TIE Fighters Fill Hollywood Prop Auction's Geek Memorabilia Motherlode
Posted by John Mahoney at 5:00 AM on July 19, 2008
For sci-fi and comic book movie fans, it doesn't get much better than right now. This week has brought both Dark Knight and the Watchmen trailer, and later this month, the Profiles in History auction house in Hollywood is opening up the prop vaults from just about every classic film over the last, oh, fifty years and isn't stopping until everything is gone, gone, gone! Marty's hover board? Check. Capt. Kirk's phaser from Search For Spock? Yep. The actual holy grail from The Last Crusade? Oh yeah! No shitty replicas here--all are the actual props used on screen, and they can be yours. But those are just the beginning.
There aren't a lot of bargains, as you might expect. Top-shelf merchandise like this is expected to fetch big collector prices. But the catalog is almost too good to be true--check out 34 highlights in the gallery below, and a few extra special favourites here:
Forget any exercise you could possible think of--it won't come close to the strength of using Bruce Lee's own actual forearm strengthener. Possibly some Dragon sweat still on it.
No, It doesn't hover but I couldn't give less of a damn. If I can't have the shoes, I want this. Too bad it's expected to fetch US$30-US$50k.
I love scotch. But I'm pretty certain I would love it even more if I was drinking it out of this ultra-dystopian Blade Runner tumbler. Plus this one's one of the few sub-US$1,000 items.
Just one of the countless things the originals have on Lucas's new films, the costumes in the original Star Wars were incredible. Especially the Imperial dudes--stylish in only the way a space fascist can be.
More highlights from this incredible trove, including C3PO's feet, Ahnold's sawed-off from T2, the rabbit mask from Donnie Darko and more:

Good god, jack's ax! I bet walking around with that would get the wife & kids off my back for five goddam minutes, I bet. With that and Deckard's Scotch glass, I'd be one happy movie geek.
And hell no, I'm not going to look at the full catalog--there's NO WAY I'd come out the other side with my credit rating in one piece.

I *must* have Frank the Bunny. I can't believe they called him "Frank the Rabbit". Blasphemy. If I get it, I don't even know if I will be able to open the box, that mask is so frackin' scary. Well worth 12k.

Baron Munchausen's hat is in there? That is awesome. Great movie, but dang, who but the Baron himself could carry off that look? And, what do you know - the turk is still at the gate...

The Immortals Mask (too bad there isn't the armor offered as well)
Plus every weapon from Conan.

@robot-shmobot: I'd get it, but only if I could make my wall looked distressed like he just broke through. Either that or mount it on a ram and make a brick wall on hinges so when guests come in, I can activate the floor shaker to imitate foot falls, then have him bust in.
@PnkPanther: I want Livingston.

How did everyone miss the Magneto + Rogue costume combo (1013)? Also, who is gonna buy the Daredevil costume? Also, Ben Affleck's head must be huge because the guy modeling the mask looks like a kid trying on his daddy's mask. Very sad to see the only ST:TNG girl costume was Troi's from ST:X, sheesh. Also 1063 complete hero costume from 300 is hot, I'm think role play! Also how did they not show the *original* Superman costume used in Superman 1+2 in this article? Also not the I'm religious or anything but how on earth were the original 10 commandments on the stones held by Charlton Heston not gone yet?

@Kaiser-Machead's Chips Ahoy!:
We are in a Nerdgasam post, and I was referring to fitting into the costume, since some people want to wear their props! Also, the fact they sell Magneto + Rogue as a pair is strange ergo twisted! At anyrate I think Giz was more upset about blatant sexual banter.
Also given that a recent comment thread (link below) was deemed acceptable I think the brave new giz rules have gone totally out the window. Even though I'm following them.

I rest my case.

@LindsayJoy's MBP is into S+M: You know, I agree that those rules seem to have gone out the door. And what's crazy is, it's the Giz staff that have taken it there. Not only that, the timing was ridiculous. I noticed a shift by the editors toward more sex-oriented posts almost immediately after that whole chastising of the commenters. Whatev, I'm happy about it.

Hmm, I'd love to have Jack's axe just for Ss&Gs. I'd be too interested in quoting what I found to be the most unintentionally funny bits of his dialogue and laughing in such a way it'd scare the local yokels, though. Amused they gave an explanation why the T-Rex's jaws look like he just had lunch. But why do Threepio's feet look so worn? I dunno which amuses me more about the Frank mask, though- the fact it's up or the person wanting it the most on here!

@Zlevee: Well to be honest, posting perverted content is a lot different from going into a random non sex related post and seeing a lot of horn dog commenters giving the few female commenters a lot of attention. I mean, come on, get a hotel room. Or seeing a sexed up photo on the top of a post with zero sexual context and for no reason.

These expected prices are low.
When Christie's had their Trek auction, the expected price for Picard's Ressikan flute was $800-1200. I bid $6,000 for it. It sold for, if I remember correctly, $40,000.

It's tough to get a lot of people to see the difference beteween talking about sex-tech with each other and just talking sex to each other. But in principle I agree with your view.
