GPS Gaming Technology Lets You Race Against F1 Pros In Realtime
Posted by Adrian Covert at 11:20 AM on July 24, 2008
iOpener's GPS technology is made so you can take real-time data from an F1 race and use it to race against those same drivers in a video game. By placing combination of Differential GPS and an Inertial Management Unit on a car, it can track its location accurate to 30cm and get the data to gamers in under 5 seconds. iOpener doesn't plan to develop games themselves, but want to make the technology open to developers, and believe the idea could span across other genres, such as biking or snowboarding. Cool because you get to "get into the action" and they could record races to retry
not so cool because the 'real' cars don't react to your moves

Oh wow! This is really awesome! I wonder if other technologies could span from this...
imagine watching a live concert, but playing rock band along with it and your playing the same songs as them...

Now this is truly a "next gen" gaming idea. People originally thought "next gen" meant higher res textures and better graphics. However, I am starting to believe "next gen" gaming is the development of a highly interactive community. Take MMOs for example, not all of the WoW subscribers are there for the storyline. Some greatly enjoy the ability to do amazing things with their friends in an customizable world. Some people think that technology is just going to alienate each other from the society but I think people are starting to realize how technology is actually bringing people together.
It would incredibly cool if a few friends and you were able to race in an F1 game while the typical AI opponents are actually REAL racers. It would allow fans of the sport to do more then watch, which is very passive. Why not make it interactive for everyone involved. People can already buy radios that listen to the pit crews just for the feeling of being closer to the action.
Music games are starting to do this now. Not all of us have the patience or dedication to learn a real instrument. However, with music games there is a now a way to simulate playing your favorite songs with friends rather then just listen which is very passive. Imagine one day being able to play your favorite music game while the band is live on stage performing a concert and your getting a live feed playing with them.
I expect to see lots of technology like this starting to pop up in the near future. Social gaming is future.

I'd love to see them convince F1 teams to put this in their cars. "So you are a third-party company that wants to track specific performance data from our cars? No thanks."

The power Glove? You know, I just realized something I will be searching eBay for I have such fond memories of Fred Savage in "The Wizard".

That's actually pretty cool! Kinda sucks it'll only apply to Indy races for now, though. I'd like to see this in the next Forza, or to a lesser extent, GT.

It actually sounds like a really cool idea but it's not going to be cool at all.

@Charles: They wouldn't be tracking anything that wasn't already available through other means, though. The only thing they'll get from a GPS unit is speed readings along with their location on the race track. It's not like they're going to spill all the technical specs of the car by tracking its position. While they obviously won't be able to react to you, I think it'll be cool to be able to see if I can beat the drivers' ghosts while the race is still running. Kinda like ghost time trial cars in current games, only in real time, against professional drivers.

Us verses real F1 drivers. Sounds like a potentially demoralising game. Either we lose every race because it's realistic or we win some and have to accept the game AI is assisting us, removing the realism... it's just not feasible that a "normal human" could win a race requiring the split second reactions needed to drive a car at up to 300km/h around a torturous race track, in a single lane, for over 300km for 90 minutes... without making a mistake. Perhaps if you can turn "crash damage" off...

@Quicksilver4648: This is not very interactive, all you get is fixed driver position data, they actual drivers won't acknowledge your presence in any way, most likely they'll just crash into you all the time. Or they could be ghost cars.
@AllYourBaseAreBelongToUs: The difficulty could be adjusted by giving gamers better brakes, faster acceleration, better grip or something like that, something they probably couldn't be able to tell but enough to make them even. Or just a car that doesn't blow up halfway through the race. ;)
The fact that gamers twiddle their thumbs and watch pretty colors when the actual driver closes in series of 90 degree turns at 300km/h should even things little. The pressure and fear you would encounter on a real race track doesn't apply for games so you can be calm and calculative, something even the most successful drivers struggle to be under the actual conditions. Of course you need to practice and learn the circuit if you hope to keep up, but that's what competitive gaming is about.

This is the coolest thing I have ever seen. I wake at 4am for F1 races. So, in the future, I'll be able to have my PS3 in the PIP box and the race on the main display. Then I can race Kubica around the track as HE's racing around the track. This is so cool.

This will only happen if Bernie can make a million off it. Also no formula team would allow this in their cars, the security risk is too great. it would be cool though

I thought this would be a cool idea for a long time. Sure're you'd lose, but it would give you an entirely new way to watch the race.
