Google Maps Adds Walking Directions, Bad Neighbourhood Caution
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 7:00 AM on July 23, 2008
If you drive a car in certain cities, you're dumb. There, I said it. But that's how Google Maps assumed everybody locomoted to their destination, until now. Yep! Google Maps finally has an option for step-by-step walking directions. Accounting for the speed difference between your kicks and four-wheeled gas-guzzlers, it estimates covering a mile will take about 19 minutes. And it says to use caution in dicey areas (I guess you'll be routed around them as it's updated?). Hopefully this gets added to the iPhone's maps in the next update, dodging cars on the BQE is exhausting. [Google Maps via Search Engine Roundtable via Lifehacker]

It's been quite fascinating to see the interest in Google's new Walking Directions. In Australia, whereis.com, has been providing Australian’s with walking directions for years. Just select 'Travel by Foot' when you’re getting a directions search. It’s a really useful tool that uses walking and bike trails to calculate the route.

Pretty cool. I hope they implement this worldwide for when I travel. This might just help convince me to get an IPhone.

@atuck: Hopstop is totally the way to do it. They even factor in train delays and construction now. Plus they had street view way before google, but it looks like google's mapped out all of queens and bk now too. Now I can just look at the berg, so that I can pretend to be hip without ever having to go!

Mass transit and walking in more tolerable weather FTW. Nuts to you short-distance urban motorists. Your fume-pumping shenanigans earns ye a stubborn pedestrian that thwarts your sneaky red light corner crawling.

Cars in Manhattan are in a completely different universe from pedestrians. Sometimes.. those universes collide with the "bike messenger" universe. And you get a hammer through your hood. Saw it happen. Coolest thing ever.

@92BuickLeSabre: I think it's more of a warning that, being their software is still in the beta stage, it could mistakenly route you into a construction area, or area without sidewalks, or off a cliff, or into a pit of fire. Or snakes. Y'know?

okay. What I really want on the iPhone add is the addition of the city transport. Google
Maps partnered with CTA in Chicago to get transit directions on GMaps and I'm sure Google has done it with other cities too.
It just irks me they can't add that to GMaps on the iPhone.

@92FakeThomasJefferson: If you drive a car in NYC, you're dumb or have a TLC license or you live with the majority of New Yorkers in The Bronx, Queens, the outer half of Brooklyn, or Staten Island.
Forgot half of my point...yo!

Don't sleep on the cabbies yo!
And does it only say use caution in "dicey" areas, or is there a general warning about being cautious in unfamiliar areas? Cause I've got issues if Google is going to go around defining "bad" neighborhoods for me, but using caution in unfamiliar areas generally is just good sense.

You forgot to mention potentially being run over by the i-Drive Trolley. If all that doesn't catch up with you, there's death from dehydration.

I pulled into Compton once cause I was running out of gas. I don't know if it was my blond hair and glowing white skin but I had a gun flashed at me in moments. It didn't use to be so bad, i mean my father lived there back in the 60's (Military Family) but it ain't so nice anymore. Anyhow, yeah, putting warnings on regular google maps would be nice too, for us airheads.

@MadColombian: I live in Ann Arbor and Google Maps has a 'Public Transit' link right in between 'By Car' and 'Walking.' We're a pretty small town but they still have it linked into the bus system here, although it might just be because Google has an office in Ann Arbor.

does it still follow the same streets as cars do? or does it include side streets just for walking as well.. for example in sweden we have streets that only bikers/walkers can go on that reduce your distance. or maybe it doesn't work internationally?

I'll be more excited when it gives me routes that include the labyrinth of paths in the woods around my neighborhood instead of just following roads. All it's really doing is giving a different time estimate.

Wow. That's awesome. Not ready to switch from Live Maps yet, but walking direction sounds great. Not so sure about the bad neighborhood caution thing.
Hopefully, this'll get the Live Maps team to release their own public transit and walking directions feature.

MapQuest has had this function for a while now. I used it a couple of weeks ago to walk to my Aunts house.(I was too cheap to pay the $1 bus fare and it was a great day out)

Dodging cars on the BQE is a bitch! They're trying to dodge you as much as you're trying to dodge them and cut you off.
@92BuickLeSabre: If you have a TLC license, the cabi's don't care, they'll hit you anyway, or sideswipe you. Especially if they're coming off or going on the Triboro or 59th st bridge. They think they own the road!
Also, if you're a New Yorker and don't know your way around your own area or don't have the cojones to ask someone on the street where to go, then this would be a good option.

@mariathephan:
In SF there are stairways in hilly areas that pedestrians can use - not intended for motor vehicles, though I'm sure that doesn't stop some people from trying.
Come to think of it I'm not sure it the stairways show up on Google maps. The last time I tried to use GM to find one in a hilly area - lol! - AT&T --> zero bars as in NO SERVICE. I guess those folks in that expensive area have to do without.

I can't wait till they add traffic-like functions:
"Estimated time to destination: Twenty Five Minutes. Checking route for muggings....."
"Warning: Smack dealer infested corner in..Two Blocks. Touch the alert symbol to divert around"

What the heck do they consider a "bad area"? I just mapped a walk through some parts of town I KNOW better than to go to, and no warning. My home town is mostly very safe, but there are some spots where the gangs out gun the cops and have regular events. But no warning. Oh well.
Oh, and by 'no warning', there is a generic note at the top that says to be careful in unfamiliar areas. That note doesn't count since it was there even in areas I know (as well do the community, county, police, etc) are extremely safe.

Interesting concept, integrating wireless internet with GPS might prove to be the application of the future. Location based services are on the rise, with Loopt and others.
But this is only the beginning, here is an analysis of the future of GPS services: [tinyurl.com]
