Giz Explains: Intel's Centrino 2
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 1:00 AM on July 18, 2008
Intel's Centrino 2 notebook platform officially launched yesterday, and brought an armada of new laptops with it. Centrino (2) is actually just a brand name for a mobile platform, which is really a fancy way saying a combination of Intel parts: a processor, chipset and wireless module. The latest and greatest is Montevina, which is not only energy efficient, but more powerful than the previous set, Santa Rosa. It also makes wireless N standard, puts WiMax in its future, and has graphics that can switch between integrated and discrete for battery/performance needs. In short, this year's crop of notebooks will blow last year's away.
Here's some more in-depth goods on what Montevina offers. The processor soul is the 45nm Penryn--while last year it mainly offered a battery boost, thanks to Montevina's faster 1066 front-side bus, you'll see some real performance gains this time around. (Intel says up to 50 percent). In that same vein, not only are Intel's integrated graphics faster with the new GMA 4500MHD, it'll let you switch between integrated and discrete graphics (like a card from ATI or Nvidia) on the fly, so you can pick performance when you need it and save juice when you don't. Sony and Lenovo are the first to have notebooks with this tech. On the wireless front, it makes wireless N standard with its new WiFi Link 5000 modules. WiMax is optional, and you'll see that in Centrino 2 notebooks later this year. Finally, it (and Penryn) are totally engineered to simply sip power, like an anorexic model with a venti skim half-decaf no-whip mocha (really, check out Lenovo's X200's retardedly awesome battery life).
BTW, to keep the naming deal straight (damn you, Intel), Montevina is the codename for Intel's new mobile platform, which will be marketed as Centrino 2. It's probable that the next mobile platform, Calpella, due next year, will also be known as Centrino 2 to your mum, if she's sorta tech savvy, so the codenames are still necessary for differentiation (there were actually four different chipsets to carry the Centrino brand). The original Centrino and the accompanying Pentium M processor was actually a paradigm shift in Intel's approach to notebooks, and eventually informed all of their processor designs--energy efficiency as the order of the day. (Or as my friend says, "It was Intel going, 'oh shit' and throwing out NetBurst and going back to the old P6 core design.")
That's Centrino, in a nutshell. Bottom line, it's gonna be the best year ever to buy a notebook.

Doesn't Apple have the trademark on the word Core ?

So I have a question? The new Chips are going to be Centrino 2 Core 2 Duo, Centrino 2 Core 2 Due Extreme, Centrino 2 Quade Core...etc
As they are now simply Centrino Core 2 Duo?

The more I look at that new Lenovo notebook, the more the 1200 dollar pricetag looks really really good. Even kicking in the 200 or so for the dock with the integrated optical drive.... It's actually not terrible.
Although I think I'll hold off until more of this generation of notebooks is out. Thanks Giz. You rule.

"gunna"? seriously?
look, maybe it's because you can't afford it, but uh, Pat? is it ok if I buy a vowel for this guy? He has one to trade in. Yeah. An "O" please. You have 3 "O"s? Thanks Pat.

Any chance we'll see this in a MSI Wind kind of netbook? Or is the Intel Atom processor gonna dominate that market?

Given that most people are more interested in what the core CPU can do, I find that the whole Centrino brand confusing.
While the Centrino is much more than pure CPU, if the CPU is indeed Core 2 Duo based (not sure though), wouldn't a branding 'Core 2 Duo Centrino' better since it advertises the basic chipset, yet indicating that it is a variation there of. It almost seems with the current state of things that the confusion is an intended part of the marketing.

@Kharnellius: HAHAH! Sorry that's funny. Mac's will be waiting a while to see Centrino 2. Chances are cupertino won't release an intermittent version of any macbook to incorporate this, rather making mac fanboys wait until the next version to see Centrino 2.
The x200 looks beautiful.

I noticed that you mention WiMAX. If you get a laptop with WiMAX already built in, will that require you to purchase a WiMAX data plan separately?

Posted 3:21 AM 18/7/08
@fogel1492: Not necessarily the actual Centrino 2 platform but effectively a close alternative. Don't they already have Wireless N standard as well as using the new Penryn procs? Or are they referring to a newer version of Penryn (which I would think would use a different codename)?
I realize they don't have the discrete/integrated graphics switching and wimax but that's why I said "a lot of" and not "all".

Bollocks, I just purchased a brand new MacBook Pro yesterday. This must mean that the "Early 2008" MBPs are about to giveway to "Late 2008" Centrino 2 models.
I should've waited....

@Sam_Zebian: I'm more for seeing if you can cut your losses and sell that perfectly usable laptop to somebody as a form of recycling instead of destroying it and indirectly wasting energy.
However, since I'm it's unlikely that you'll get even $1000 out of it, maybe you should just call them and tell them you smashed it before you actually do?

YES this is coming out at the perfect time for me, my hp dv9260nr is something i got a year ago, and I regret buying such a huge 17" laptop, so since I have a best buy 1 year accidental damage plan, I'm smashing it after I get it from repair (hinge broke already), so that way they'll give me my $1400 in credit, and I'll wait until they stock the newer 15" HP's with centrino 2. BTW, does anyone have any experience with best buy extended plans, do they really do what they say or will they just be like "fuck off you broke your laptop now buy a new one with your own money, this plan doesn't cover this this and this blah blah blah"???

I believe the next MAC refresh will feature smoother textures for the palm rests and up to 30% stiffer cardboard for the packaging. Expect the Centrino 2 platform to debut on the MBP sometime Q2 2009.

@dmexs: well, I already have tried selling it on craigslist for 3 weeks, so I give up. Also, yes, that is my inital idea (to say I dropped it down the stairs by accident because I never move it ussually until I had to get it repaired, and when I got home to bring it to my room it fell, then to see what they say over the phone, and if they say "bring it in and we'll give you a replacement unit", then I'll just chuck it down the stairs) I was just wondering if anyone had returned a completely demolished laptop before and I have to act fast as my warranty ends in 1 month and I get my laptop in 2 weeks, so I will do it the first day I get it.

@ANoel:
why on earth would they? it is an Intel brand. have you not seen the Intel "Core" stickers slapped over all manner of PCs? (and not Apple...) no clue where you would get such an idea.
@fogel1492:
based on current rumor the "next version" the "fanboys" have to "wait" for are probably about a month away. i would guess for sur prior to September 15th. most likely mid-end August... possibly earlier. such a long "wait".
