Gakken Unveils a New 8mm Camera: That's Right...NEW
Posted by Sean Fallon at 7:40 AM on July 23, 2008
I must admit that I was intrigued by the Super 8 projector that Japanese manufacturer Gakken released back in March. My only problem was that you would need to get your hands on an 8mm camera in order to get back to the retro filmmaking stylings of our forefathers. Fortunately for film buffs, Gakken is planning to release a companion to their projector with their own low-cost, no frills 8mm camera.
Gakken's 8mm camera hasn't even been announced, so pricing and release date information are not available. Not to worry though--you can still take a trip down memory lane by hitting the link to check out out OObjects list of 20 classic 8mm cameras featuring famous selections from as early as the 1930s. crossing my fingers for the new Gakken 8 track cassette player, with heat-warped glen campbell tape pre-inserted to complete my obsolete hi-fi collection.

why would they make an 8mm cam? why not a super 8? is this a typo? regardless, have fun finding film stock since kodak discontinued the glorious kodachrome line. you can still find other stocks though...it just takes effort. and then there's processing and transferring costs. i think i'll just save up for a red.

I used to teach at a filmmaking summer camp for kids (8 to 14) and we shot on Super 8, then sent it out for professional telecine to DV, and then we edited digitally. There are transfers back and forth, but only a few companies do it and it's usually rather expensive.
8mm is the bomb. You can learn everything you need to know about filmmaking by shooting on 8mm.

I would like to find a good electronic video - to - 8mm transfer service. Who knows if anyone will be able to see our current movies in the future. At least with 8mm, you could hold them up and look at them if you had to.

Typo? Clueless to antiquated media? If they made a Super8 projector why make an 8mm camera? They are different formats. 8mm has two rows of perferations, Super8 has one row with the image taking up the extra space on the film, thus its Super.

ok... what we see here is a prototype produced on a stereometric printer. the final product will likely not be made from this Elmer's-glue like translucent stuff.

Could that have been made using rapid prototyping techniques?
