First iPhone 2.0 Pwnage Tool Will Not Unlock iPhone 3G, says Dev Team
Posted by John Mahoney at 12:59 AM on July 18, 2008
The tireless iPhone Dev folks who managed to jailbreak the iPhone 3G within five days of launch have announced that the first Pwnage tool will be released shortly, but it will not support a baseband unlock of the iPhone 3G. The team is still working out the particulars of the unlock and rightfully wants to do it correctly the first time. It will however jailbreak the 3G while maintaining App Store support and unlock your iPhone classic running the 2.0 firmware. [iPhone Dev Team Blog] Thanks Mehmet!

Great. Downloaded it, but the program doesn't seem to fully launch. I'm just left with the icon in the dock, and in the menu (and you can't access any sub menus from that). Any clues gratefully followed.

I'll be jailbreaking just to be able to customize the look-and-feel of the interface. I don't understand why Steve doesn't want us to have personalized backgrounds.

@James: "ever" is a strong claim. I do agree that there are a lot of Apps that Apple just can't release though the AppStore channel.

@iCarmen 2.0-Yellow Free Edition!: There are plenty of tweeks that arent, and never will be, available in the App store. Right now, as it stands, nothing that runs in the background will ever be there. Interface manipulation / customization also won't ever show up on the App store.

the only thing about jailbreaking that i don't like is what happens when a new update comes out for the iPhone. BAM all that hard work is put right back to stock, OEM, erased, and you have to repeat the process.

Interesting, so Apple was able to hold off unlocking for the firs 1 million or so users. Well, if they can't get an unlock in the next 30 days ATT will be very happy.

Measure twice, cut once is an adage that should certainly apply to product releases... You'll never catch me complaining about waiting for something more polished to be released.

I've been hoping for this. I definitely think there are many more applications to be had on installer that are not present on the App store. Who want to be a $10 3D iCopter when I can have side-scrolling 2D action for free?! Besides, what is the point of unlocking if you didn't pay the subsidized price of the iPhone 3G? You're still spending a ton up front.

Until an AppStore application enables SMS forwarding, then there will be a reason for jailbreaking.

@hanspecans: im not putting the idea down... relax. i have never done it before and have only heard what other people have told me about it, which is what i was talking about. didn't know that if you just waited till the update for the jailbreak came out that all of your changes would be safe from a reformat. good to know though.

I unlocked my iPhone to use with TMobile. I don't have a contract, just month to month. I am using a BB plan and I have unlimited txt and internet on it for $75 a month. (With 1000 minutes)
Besides not having visual voicemail I am very happy with TMobile using my iPhone.

I was somewhat out of the loop on the last pwnage tool release-- did they finally release a win version or was it osx only? I'm wondering if I'll need to line up borrowing a mac for this new release...

Just so I have it straight, if those that unlock are violating their use agreement they won't be upset when Apple/ATT remote brick their phones right? Just checking.

Mind sharing what app you used to do it, or was it a little bit of hacking on your own?

@x3r0: i used summer board for the theme and customize to rearrange the icons. pretty easy to do. that theme there is called damino: [anjuna.deviantart.com] Both apps should be available through the installer app
