Even on EDGE, Mobile Safari 2.0 Is Much Faster
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 7:00 AM on July 22, 2008
The iPhone 2.0 software might be shakier than a true believer's legs in the presence of Steve himself, but there's at least one benefit (besides the app goodness): Mobile Safari 2.0 is much zoomier. John Gruber ran the benchmarks, comparing them against historical ones, and found that it runs at least 1.7 times faster than before, if not faster (depending on the test). Check out all the numbers over there, if you care about the details, and not just the zip zip away. [Daring Fireball via Ars]

Now you all know why Stevo chose to keep the system closed last year when he released the iPhone. Now he has to worry about all those crappy software apps by third parties that are crashing the hell out of the iPhone.

I too have noticed that edge browsing is a lot faster. I keep 3G turned off most of the time.

I still haven't had any problems with mine. Browsing with WiFi is easy breezy and with 3G it's not bad either. Haven't really had a reason to use it on Edge thus far. Also haven't had to do any phone resets and have only had a handful of apps quit on me.
Am I really that light of a user, or are networks more important than hardware in this case?

2.0 is just slow...period. I thought it was my phone until I started reading more reports. At least Safari TEST faster *pfft*

2.0 Screws up fetch Email though - randomly looses the ability to get Email from POP accounts, just goes into and endless waiting mode requiring an Email App reset or a full iPhone power cycle.
Seems to be widespread, and no fix available at this time :(

I believe the term is 'snappier.'

Actually, I take that back. Google maps did seem faster last week when I was trying to map my way to something downtown.

I can't really tell a difference. It still seems slow, even on Wifi, compared to a computer.

It's true, 2.0 improves EDGE speeds.
But the 3G version is snappier still. I was in an are with barely 2 bars and it still loaded pages faster than having full bars on EDGE.

yup. I noticed this to. It runs alot better. A few hours before I got 2.0 i played around with my friends iPod Touch with the January update and I felt his broswer zoomed and ran faster than my 1.1.4. Now my 2.0 runs great!

2.0 slows down the phone because there is so much more data on the phone then before... like apps. So what would you expect? I mean I agree that apple should make some bug fixes. but its basically the same situation as 1.0 it was slow and things were very buggy but in 1.0.1 alot was better. Lets wait till 2.0.1 to make some judgments, eh? (and im not canadian : )

to be perfectly honest, i haven't really noticed on account of a HUGE percentage of the things i'm doing that are web-related being through apps and not mobile safari.
and of course it seems very fast for the most part.

Yeah, my 2.0 is shaky. The animations are choppy, address book is slow, application crash to the home screen. 2.0.1, please and thank you.

I've noticed text input into text boxes-- at say, Gizmodo or such-- is really jumpy and glitchy with the new firmware. I'd love to roll back to 1.1.4... 2.0 is just a pile of crap so far. It obviously needed to be baked a bit more before they pulled it out of the oven.

The article says he hasn't noticed any changes to Safari but I have. When a site has a drop-down jump menu it doesn't automatically select it for you. You have to physically press "Done" for it to take affect. Know it's tiny but for me it's kind of annoying.

@Ferg1:
You think 2.0 slows down the phone because there are more apps installed with it? Since you can only run one app at a time, that doesn't seem to make much sense.

@GeekyNerdGuy:
How come you were using Google Maps in Safari instead of the native Google Maps app?

If Gizmodo or the readers had actually looked at the article they'd realise that the benchmarks demonstrating speed increase have nothing to do with bandwidth.
They are to do with performance of the rendering engine (webkit) and javascript VM updates in the new version of Safari.

I didn't have an original iphone, but I'm glad I'm not crazy thinking this thing's animations and text entry are a bit wonkier than expected.
