Drobo Open SDK Makes Apps for DLNA Devices, Bittorrent, Media Players Possible

Drobo, the storage enclosure that monitors up to 4 HDDs, now has an open SDK to go with its ability to protect and share your data. What does this mean for Drobo users? They can expect apps that will allow them to stream data across DLNA devices, work as a bittorrent client, interface with wi-fi devices like the Eye-Fi or set up a simple FTP. The SDK is available now and can be found at [Drobo].

The fact that it is 4 drives either striped or spanned in one box scares me. With the amount of heat that the larger drives make now, and with 4 drives inside, there is 4 times more chances for your storage to fail. NO RAID5 parity makes it just a large drive with 4 times less reliability.

Make sure it is used for backup and not archiving and you will be right.

    The above comment is inaccurate:

Comment: Drobo provides the same data redundancy as RAID in the event of drive failure, similar to RAID 1 and 5, mirroring and striping, without the complications, limitations, and inflexibilities of current RAID storage today. You don’t need to know anything about RAID, how to configure, which RAID level to set, just plug it in, add your drives, and off you go. Use any standard 3.5″ SATA I or II drive, any mfg, any size; no cables, sleds, screws, just slide the drive right in.

Best to watch the video at drobo.com, which clearly shows the benefits vs. standard RAID:

If you are familiar on how current RAID works today, you’ll be amazed after watching the video.

Regarding the heat dissipation of current drives on the market today, Drobo has a large fan, very quiet, which easily takes care of the cooling.

    Data protection without the headache.
