Cut Coupons, Serve Pies, Lose Respect With Pizza Scissors
Posted by Jack Loftus at 5:00 AM on July 27, 2008
Does the act of cutting up a pizza vex you to no end? Do you find yourself with numerous nicks and cuts on your palms because you constantly use the wrong end of a pizza cutter to slice pies? Lucky for you, there's pizza scissors. The manufacturer claims the US$20 shears-and-spatula design won't damage plates or trays like a pizza wheel or knife would, but we think if that's the main reason you purchase one of these, you probably have bigger issues on your plate than a few dinged pieces of china. I hope these never make it to Australia. I figure if someone finds cutting pizza to be such a monumental chore, they probably aren't making it at home to begin with. I'm actually on a mission to keep people from buying what I deem the year's most useless kitchen gadget.

@bosskev: I've had many hours of fun with this software. Back when I was going to the gym, I was planning to animate my transformation, but... see beginning of sentence.

@itchytooth: Not planning to display any morphing gifs, certainly did not take any lovely "before" shots. However, if the demand is there, I could still create a reasonable simulation. All I'd need are two similarly-posed photos of Brad Pitt and Jabba the Hutt.

@Trowble (XBL/PSN): Are you some sort of half man, half Italian, half Chinese, and half robot type hybrid? If you are, then you're more of a man than me.

Thank god - I was tired of constantly ruining the cardboard box that every pizza in the entire world comes in. What company is delivering pies on porcelain dishes?

@BiZarRroBALlmeR: Mmmm, Bertucci's... when're they coming to Seattle? I miss 'em.
This product is unnecessary if you're comfortable with circular slices of pizza!

The Italian in me will stick with the pizza cutter. The gadget-loving-Chinese in me will stick to the pizza cutter as well.

I almost like it, but they didn't follow through on their own concept.
Take the same device but make the spatula part into a variable angle protractor-like gauge that sets the width of the cut, calibrated not in degrees but in "how many slices", THEN you've got a winner.
'Course, my solution is just to eat out, let the pizzeria staff do all that for me. (That is, once the happy day returns that I can eat pizza again. Officially halfway there, folks.) (-32)

They should put scissors on both sides and connect the mechanism so you can cut out just one slice with one attempt.

My mom cuts pizza with scissors. It's a good hack. But it sure doesn't require specialized pizza scissors! Regular scissors work just fine.

I'd rather have this than a wheel, since this won't scratch the crap out of a non-stick pan, and all the non-metal wheels I've seen are more than that anyway. And this thing should be able to power through the worst $3 frozen pizza pepperoni without just cramming it into the cut.

Meh.
It's fun searching for, finding and subsequently breaking in a good Pizza cutter.
This looks neither fun nor fun nor delicious.

While its a great idea, if it only cuts one side, how are you meant to cut the first slice of Pizza with that, it just wouldn't work

i love the idiocy in this comment thread. i particularly like the guy whos never cooked his own pizza. i swear, people carry within themselves at all times the means of their own destruction. it may take only a pair of pizza scissors to reveal its shape. which is round, apparently.

@Hiphopopotamus: This invention does seem kind of unnecessary, but I'd like to point out that I don't think this is meant for pizza delivered in cardboard boxes, anyway. Those pizzas come sliced...

The more I look at these scissors the more they appeal to me, and I have no idea why.
I am pretty sure they would look great jammed in the drawer with all the other useless, but cool gadgets that I never use, like the tea bag squeezer and that egg separator that keeps getting caught on my Ginzu knife.

You nutty purists and your rolling cutting tools. A pizzeria does best with this quick slicing equipment, but you don't need that stuff at home, and I'll be damned if I have anyone running their damn circular blades on my good cookware, or ye may venture hitherto unexplored realms of culinary cruelty.

@bosskev: The spatula part will go under the pie with the scissor part open, then you cut and move right and cut out the sclice, but again, real scissors would be easier.

@Hiphopopotamus: What place delivers uncut pie? I think this is more for the "home made" (i.e. freezer made) pies.
Scissors are really the best way to cut without pulling all of the topping off when you get stuck on a damn pepperoni, but I don't think you need to take it to this extreme.
