Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D
Posted by Jason Chen at 10:00 AM on July 19, 2008
Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D is a Mario Kart-like 3D racer with Crash Bandicoot at the wheel instead of the chubby Brooklyn plumber. You unlock new characters as you collect items, but the controls are pretty much standard for iPhone racing games. The one thing we noticed is that the default calibration is off, leading Crash to always veer left at the neutral point even when we started up the game with the phone on a desk. This means we needed to tilt the phone slightly to the right to go straight. For US$9.99, we expect better. [iTunes Link and iPhone App Review Marathon]

@OMG! Ponies!: As soon as I saw the beginning of your comment "Mario is not from Brooklyn" - I had the same thought. [gawker.com]

Mario is not from Brooklyn. He says he is, but if he ever set foot in Bensonhurst, he'd be beaten within an inch of his life quicker than you can say "It's me! Mario!" He and his guido brother are from Staten Island which is presently at war with Belmar, NJ in what has to be the funniest case of a politician shooting his mouth off EVAH!
And no fun, puzzlish games on the iPhone for me. If Girlie sees Tetris and/or Scrabble on my iPhone, it will become her iPhone.*

Mario Kart can't be beated, but this one is kind of fun...nothing that will blow your mind but is OK.

No Kart gaming could ever beat Mario Kart. NONE.

Mine does the same thing as the review, so you've at least got one who can confirm. Very odd that ours drift like that while others don't?

no problems here. I put my iphone on a desk, which i first check to see if it was level and it drove straight as an arrow. Are you sure you guys don't have one leg that is shorter the the other causing the drift?

I know Mario. I'm friends with Mario. You sir are no Mario.
Seriously, I've met Mario, or at least Charles Martinet, the voice of Mario...and he's nothing like the character. He's tall (6.5 feet?) blond (white?) haired american dude. Got a picture with him at a Nintendo booth at CES a few years back. Google 'voice of Mario'.

@MacTodd: Wow, Mario's a friggin midget compared to his voice. I wonder how big Mario's package is...actually not.

The games all look very cute and are probably fun-ish but I just can't bring myself to pay for them when I've got a Wii that I haven't turned on in weeks.

Once again! Luigi has been left out of the spotlight. Why can't Luigi ever get a bit of attention?
Personally I have never liked Crash Bandicoot in any form, I always saw him as a poor mans Italian plumber.

@CutePuppyz: It's not like Peach will ever touch the dude. He's always scurrying into pipes, killing giant turtles.

Is it possible that the gyroscope chip was mounted in an off-level orientation?
I don't know much about this hardware, but it seems plausible that the chip/board could be installed in such a fashion that it's just "slightly off"? It might be within tolerances for a bench or QA test, but just enough out of whack to cause a slight drift in this game.

Perhaps you've discovered a flaw in your building and all the furniture within it are off level. Someone got some 'splaining to do.

I have the same problem with the veering except mine goes to the right. I honestly believe Hanzo was on to something when he speculated about the gyroscope being off.

Actually, I just tested several apps: Crash Nitro Kart, Cro-Mag, iPint, and Cube Runner. The only one that wasn't off was Cro-Mag, and I think that was just because it was less sensitive. I have a feeling the iPhone/Touches are just off. Really before there were other apps, it only needed to be able to tell if it was horizontal or vertical, so being off a tiny bit wouldn't be a big deal at the time.

I haven't noticed this problem with Crash Nitro Kart, but have noticed it in Cube Runner. I'm thinking that the iPod is just off. I'm amazed that you guys are so harsh on this game, but praise Cro-Mag Rally, which doesn't have circuits or anything. Cro-Mag is just do one race and back to the title screen. Crash actually has unlockables, drifting, circuits, and more Mario-Kart type features and weapons.
I'd say this is one of the best games on the phone right now. And I don't think it's even at the 1.0 release yet.
