Cornstarch + Water + Subwoofer = Amazing Physics Video
Posted by Kit Eaton at 1:15 AM on July 12, 2008
It's Friday, you've been swimming in a sea of iPhone news... so what's better to distract you than this amazing vid. It's a demonstration of the joys of non-Newtonian liquids (look 'em up: amazing things), showing exactly how they can confound your expectations. In this case it's a cornstarch fluid on a metal sheet on a subwoofer, behaving as if gravity is optional. Try it yourself: add cornstarch to water until it just gets to a "weird" state, and then play. Fun hey? Just don't make too much of a mess, particularly if you're at your desk (and why the heck have you got cornstarch handy there?) [Random Good Stuff]

wat exactly is a subwoofer? :D my groupmates and I plan to make this part of our project, you see. so i'm looking for enhancements and stuff :)

If you put a cornstarch solution on a picture of Bill Maher, it does the same thing.

The cool thing about cornstarch and water: If you keep it under constant motion and stress, it remains a solid. If you stop, it instantly turns into a liquid, but you can cut it with scissors, since they create a stress point too.

I believe Rutherford won the Nobel in chemistry. Delicious irony.

Come on, guys - this is a gadget blog, let's focus on the technology under this bodacious experiment. In other words, give us the specs on that subwoofer? Who cares if it does not matter. WE NEED TO FOCUS -- I know it's friday, but I can't let myself be distracted by amazing videos of cornstarch coming to life.

If I had one suggestion for the video, find a way to secure the tray/plate to the sub woofer. Maybe some bungie cords so you could still move it, but it would keep it tight, and allow more freedom to interact with the magic clumpy white liquid/solid.

@Lupison: Actually, it's a physics lesson. A non-Newtonian fluid is one that has more than one viscosity constant. Lots of liquids behave like this, across a range of molecules: it's the physics of the shear stresses that makes it all work weirdly.
@opedog: Heh. That's what I said... ;-)

Pretty cool stuff. Its viscosity changes in proportion to the force applied to it. You can run across a lake of this stuff if you keep moving, but you'll sink as soon as you stop.

This sort of thing comes up from time to time. Mixing corn starch and water in the right ratio can create what's called a non-Newtonian Fluid ([en.wikipedia.org]).

This is a chemistry lesson, not a physic's lesson. A lesson on how molecules in liquid form will try to bound but that bound has it's breaking point. A really cool experiment is to take a penny and and one of those medicine droppers full of water and drop a drop of water one at a time and see how high you make your column of water.

Curves knows wassup. I don't know why anyone thinks iPhone G3 is better than cornstarch. At least the cornstarch has tactile feedback and doesn't require activation at the store. WTF, apps? Can you thicken a sauce with your iPhone? How does that iPhone taste? Yeah. I thought so. Steve Jobs has runny gravy and you know it. Maybe none of you fanboys would need GPS to find a restaurant if you knew how to cook a decent meal with cornstarch.

Most body fluids are non-newtonian like blood or milk. The biggest thing to know about them is that they are hard to pump because the viscosity changes with pump speed.

I remember some really out there stuff from higher mathematics at uni, all the set theory and geometry and algebra etc, and that was just the beginners stuff that all IT, comp sci and physics students had to take, I can't imagine what math students had to go through; they probably loved it. Many a time did I think, who the hell made all this up? Because it definitely seemed like someone had been taking the piss with higher mathematics.
