Coloured Wiis, Redesigned DS: Coming Never

OK, it's a bit dramatic for us to say "coming never," but we shouldn't expect Wiis in multiple snazzy colours (you know, the ones promised by Nintendo when the Wii was announced) or a redesigned DS (it could be RAZR-thin!) anytime soon. Instead, it sounds like Nintendo is more focused on getting each device "into the hands of more people." In layman's terms, that means "making more money selling the crap that you already won't stop buying anyway." [IGN via Maxconsole]

@TravisO: Actually, it was black and indigo, not black and cobalt.
And they did keep their promise on offering different colors for the DS (both original and Lite flavors), so we'll see.

A black Wii would have been nice, but at least I finally got my white one and can FINALLY play mario kart :)

Anybody feel deja-vu here? Let's not forget Nintendo's ideas of offering 5 different colors for the Gamecube and when the time comes, they only offer 2 (black and cobalt) and eventually some special edition silver ones.
Don't hold your breathe people, Nintendo's track record with keeping these kinds of promises has been abysmal. It especially doesn't help when this picture is 100% Photoshop.

@Platypus Man: the colored wiis will have to drink out of different homebrew fountains, have to ride the backend of the bus-speeds. but one day a hack will come that will unite them with the promise of dvd playback and iso-loading without modchip, and it will be a glorious day.

Well, this is a little disappointing. When the wii was first announced I wanted to get one of the Black ones. However, now that I already own a Wii I wouldn't go buy another one just for the color, but this probably means that we won't be getting the colored controllers either.

It doesn't really make sense to offer new options until market saturation has been reached with the old ones, though.
Offering colored Wiis or an entirely new version of the DS would mean retooling their existing production facilities to manufacture the new items. But, if they're still selling the existing units like hotcakes, there's probably no real advantage, yet, to diversifying their offerings. It may even be counterproductive, because it can introduce confusion about which to buy. Never mind that there will be those who will buy a current unit and will then buy a newer model just to have one that matches the sofa or is extra-shiny.

Come on people. Colored Wiis is an extremely offensive term. Please refer to them as Wiis of color.

I dont really care about having a choice of other colors, if there were 5 colors at release I would have been standing there scratching my head because the white, black, silver, and red all look great! I probably would have gone with red. I think a special edition would be a great idea like the NES or Famicom versions of the GBA SP, otherwise I think Wii looks sharp in white...as it would in black but that is beside the point. Nintendo made up my mind for me and I have no problem with the color of the console or the fact that there is only one color available, the white looked fresh and new and its a color Nintendo has never done. Consoles have traditionally always been gray, silver, or black and most people really dont care, its only pansies and polly-prissy -pants people that even care about having that option. Dont give me all that "in this day and age crap we should be free to choose" ..ok fine, buy it or dont, stop crying. VERY RARELY in the 30+ years of video games history have we been given console color options. And its not one of those "its about time deals" because I have no problem with the fact that a machine only comes in one color. Clothing is different, A car different, but do I care that my computer tower, blackberry, or TV is always black or grey...no not really because it just seems to work and I leave that decision up to the designer because they have the trained eye. I dont feel a company should have to concentrate on that, when there are more important issues to spend brainpower on. There are plenty of talented people who can customize your console for you.
