CCTV Awesomeness: How to React When a Car Crashes Into You During Lunch
Posted by Adam Frucci at 1:45 AM on July 24, 2008
Here's some of the sweetest CCTV footage we've seen in a while: this guy was just sitting at a table by the window of a diner in North Carolina, minding his own business, when a car smashed through the wall, ramming him into the counter. His reaction? First things first, he put his hat back on. Damn. He escaped with only some minor cuts and bruises but didn't get to finish his lunch.

@zenpoet: Yeah, we are odd creatures. I was hit while jaywalking across a street a couple of years ago (I got the jaywalking ticket in the hospital a few hours later!). I rolled up on the hood of the car, then back onto the pavement until I came to a rest in the middle of the street. But the funny thing? I never let go of my coffee mug until the paramedics took it from me.... had it in my hand the entire time.
I mean it was a nice insulated mug and all, but you'd think I'd have let it go in that situation!

@jcy: This really brought back some memories for me.
I was involved in a wicked accident with a 4x4 mule that broke my nose and gave a bad concussion. To make a long story short, I was driving, dropped the front end into a hidden ditch in a field, and was popped up into the role cage above me where I hit my head and nose very hard on all for bars (picture a pinball, only with eyes).
I was bleeding, confused, and very disoriented. First thing I did? Looked for my hat. I didn't go find help until I located my hat. People do very strange things in extreme and unexpected circumstances.

What is it with Americans and hats? Actually, change that to American men.
@AhnyerKeester: Yes, but drivers in some places suck more than others. Here in California, drivers are worse than in my native England (I'm talking about the average standard, there's very good and totally crap drivers in both places). I think there are two main reasons for this:
1. The US idea that a person's car is an extension of his/her living and dining room and it's appropriate to do anything that you might do in those rooms while driving
2. The piss-easy driving test here

If the seats and table had been aligned differently, he'd have been more seriously injured. From the video, he slides sideways as pretty as you please (as we say) until he hits the bar and his table is replaced by the bar stool. He even puts his arm on it right after while he assesses where his table's just gone.
Had his seat been aligned a foot or so forward he'd have hit the barstool with his ribs instead of flush against the flat bar.

I was in a video rental store one night and a car came crashing inside, sending videos flying everywhere. Obviously is scared the hell out of me; for a split second I thought a bomb went off. Then the car backed out, turned around and started to drive away. I ran after it to get the license plate, and then the driver stopped, got out, and drunkenly stumbled towards me. He started crying saying that he was sorry, and then the store employees grabbed him and called the cops.

I can't tell you how often people (usually senior citizens) jam on the gas pedal instead of the break, and then claim their "brakes failed". I'm sure it happens occasionally, but almost all the time, it's just the person not knowing what the hell they're doing.

@Toshie: Wow! It's impossible to post anything here that makes reference to differences in statistical distributions or populations of people without someone getting upset.
Re 1:
Evidence a: Cup holders (often inserted in the US model of a car and absence in non-US models).
Evidence b: The fact that in many countries just drinking from a cup while in control of a vehicle is a ticketable office. In the US it is not.
Evidence c: Drive-throughs.
Re 2:
Evidence: Having personally taken a driving test in California and the UK. The test here in Cali is a joke. Someone can pass the test without being fit to drive. Included in this is the fact that there is no freeway driving component to the test.
It's funny how most people here in the US make frequent collective references to people in other countries and yet are offended when observation of national tendencies on their own soil are made.

@LittleJon: I'm not upset, just making conversation. I'm sorry if I'm upsetting you, it's not my intent.
So cup holders and drive throughs make us guilty of: "The US idea that a person's car is an extension of his/her living and dining room and it's appropriate to do anything that you might do in those rooms while driving"? Seems a stretch...
As for the California versus UK driving tests, I can't comment, but I agree the driving tests in the states that I've taken them should be much more stringent and comprehensive.
"It's funny how most people here in the US make frequent collective references to people in other countries and yet are offended when observation of national tendencies on their own soil are made."
It's funny how you're complaining about generalizations by making a generalization of your own. :-)

@Toshie: I wasn't complaining about generalizations. I was merely pointing out that we all do it and so shouldn't be offended when it comes back at us.
I think it's actually natural for humans to generalize. We evolved in small genetically-similar groups and our group cohensiveness and in-group socialization would benefit from generalizations about other groups. Of course this doesn't necessarily work well in our current environment. A bit like our craving for fat to reduce our changes of starving to death is bad in our food-rich environment.
