@BostonPimpDaddy: Um, you do know Halo 3 (thankfully) was never released on the PS3, right? So there's no comparison there, and COD4, and GTAIV did nearly exactly the same on the PS3 as on the 360, the difference was negligible. But even if it does double their sales, which it won't, this probably had more to do with another fat bribe from MS. I'm betting it makes the GTA bribe look like chump change.

On the Square side, this just looks like a dumb move. Not only do they piss off a lot of fans by pushing back the release date while they wait for the 360 version, and dumbing down the graphics to keep them looking and running the same (ala GTAIV), but they're vastly over estimating the demand from 360 owners. They're not usually the type for console RPG's, which have all done horribly on Xbox (they're more likely to buy what ever version of Madden is out that week, or the latest rehashed FPS, or Gran Turismo rip-off). And unless Square is able to dumb it down a LOT, that's going to be a lot of discs to ship for one game, greatly increasing their cost for a game targeted at those with too short of an attention span to even be interested in a Final Fantasy game.

What this really says, is they don't think the new game is going to be very good, or live up to the incredible hype, so they need as many people as possible to pre-purchase it to turn a profit.

And I would make a RROD jab here at this POS console, and it's blindly pathetically devoted fanboys, and how many consoles a 60+ hour game would kill, but it's not very funny now that my 360 just died, after destroying my copy of NGII. :(

Gran Turismo 5?! It's half of a game and, more importantly, while GT's makers were busy cramming microphones into engine blocks, Project Gotham's makers were investing in gameplay. PGR3 moved XBoxes. GT does not move PlayStations.

The MGS4 refrain has been trotted out by every defender of Sony's honor for 3 years now. It wasn't until a month ago that people could answer "yes" to the above question.

Sony has games that people look forward to; Microsoft has games that people can play today.

Don't get me wrong - I love my PlayStation 3. It's real good at playing Blu-Ray movies. But if I'm going to play video games, I'm turning on my 360.

Actually FFXIII is only announced for the 360 for North America and Europe. In Japan, it's still exclusive to the PS3 (larger install base).

@Mike918: I don't see how that really screws Sony over in the rest of the world. North America maybe, but in Europe the install base almost matches the 360 and it was released a year later. It's not always about software, but more about the raving fanboys of the world who flame every little thing that goes on. Sony will do just fine, the 360 will do just fine. They'll be fighting another overpriced console war in 3-4 years.

I disagree with the "dumbing down" comment about 360 graphics. I own both consoles, and GTA4 looks better on my 360 than my PS3.

I think this will be a fairly big blow to the PS3. I would have grudgingly bought FFXIII for the PS3, but I would have rather bought it on the 360. And now I will.

I'm no fanboy either way, it just seems like the cross-platform wins always end up in the 360 column.

As to "bribing", what do you call the financing deal that Sony gave to Square which was responsible for the exclusives? In the business world, they're not called bribes. They're called exclusive contracts. Apple did not "bribe" AT&T; Warner did not "bribe" DC Comics.

As to Gran Turismo, I say Project Gotham 3. And Project Gotham 4. And both are more than equal to Gran Turismo 5: Prologue (a.k.a. - half of a game that costs $40)

As to XBox and RPGs: There were a couple of RPGs on the original XBox. Maybe you've heard of them. Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic 2. They sold XBoxes.

As to dumbing down Final Fantasy: It's Final Fantasy. Androgenous male character with fancy hair and a giant sword runs around getting into a turn-based battle every 3 minutes with a mage, a healer, a thief, and a power character as backup. There are chocobos. Did I sum it up accurately?

yeah that is mostly true, b/c the staff is going to be split and you will get a game not as good as it could have been or a great game that we will have to wait for another 3 years for. hopefully in this case it will be different. On multi-platform releases, it is almost always the PS3 version that causes delays. See GTA IV. Alone in the Dark? They are going to release the 360 version on time and just delay the PS3 version. C&C3? They just decided to shitcan the PS3 version.

As much as I love Final Fantasy (and I mean love... I own three boxed copies of FF1 for NES and every other FF game ever released with multiples of some) you're pretty close lol. But a "dumbed down" explanation, such as yours, can be given for any game. But not ever game has Chocobos... +1 for Final Fantasy :c)

Except with GTAIV, which was delayed for the 360 according the dev team. It's never been disputed that the 360 is easier to code for, it's just a dumbed down PC, and the PS3 was an after thought in most early multi-platforms, but with FFXIII, it was the lead system, and the game was more than half done, now instead of focusing resources on one system they're going to split it, and have to bring up another version from almost scratch.

So obviously it's the 360 causing this delay, I don't see how that's even disputable.

Basically if your looking for a quick thrill stick to FPS if your want a great story telling and emotion and games that take much time but give you such a great sense of achievement on completion then you should in MANY ways enjoy the Final Fantasy series.

And Live is crap, you need to deal with this. If paying a monthly fee to use a crappy slow interface to hang out with homophobic 13 year olds is your idea of a "killer app", then you are a true 360 fanboy. I'm not that big a fan of Home, but I'll take it over Live (especially since my PS3 still WORKS), and if it's vaporware, why am I playing/using it now? If it wasn't for the Marketplace, I wouldn't even bother having my 360 online at all.

And you do know that Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is a DEMO, right? Yes, they annoyingly charge you for it but so does Live, forcing you to join the ranks of the other tools who bought a Gold membership, just to get a stupid demo. At least with Gran Turismo's demo you get more of a game than you do with project gotham, which was kind of crap.

And yes, I remember KotOR, it was a great PC game, just like all the good 360 games, it was WAY better on the PC. And it was on the original Xbox, so from a sales point of view, my argument stands.

@robinandtami: Ehem... According to Kotaku who had a interview with SE. It will first come out in Japan. Then and only then will they start the translation and developement gor X360. This is understandable as the game is built on a pc tool kit so it'd be a little of a shlep to get it onto X360, or perhaps even more if they have to dumb things down and tweak certain aspects.

Also about the dumbing down the game thing I doubt it'll be true and I'm thinking that with this game you'll see what the PS3 hardware is capable of when compared to X360 cause this game has long be in development for the PS3 and SE have said for a while that it's going to use the PS3 to it's full strength so we'll see if the X360 can keep up. I also think it'll be interesting because I think this game is at least going to take over 6 discs on the X360 due to the fact that they will have built it with the Blu-Ray's space in mind, I highly doubt they'd now start cutting details out both works due to size constraints on a market that will account for less that 10% of total sales (Guessing due to the fact that it sells loads more in Japan where it will be a PS3 exclusive and due to the fact that it'll sell equal or more for the PS3 in Western areas (More for the PS3 because it's the system it's been developed for in mind and I'm sure you'll find that the Hands-on reviews of the X360 version will show downfalls when compared with the PS3 version).

Also the PS3 has one big thing which I'm sure SE being a good quality company would have utilized to it's fullest which is the Cell, the X360 doesn't have this so the way it's going to process things is going to have to be different and will be a compromise in either frame skipping or game quality.

It'll be interesting to see how this all shakes out... I'm buying the PS3 version no doubt. Also I'm slightly pissed off that X360 got this now more because I realize the fact that it's going to be delayed even more because development for the X360 will hold the title back from English speaking countries. So we're going to hear how amazing the game is and see these beautiful spoiler videos pop up on youtube from Japan nearly a full year before it shows it's face in US and a year and a quarter before it makes it's way to Europe.

So you go MS! I personally have a grudge against you because you've greatly increased the time before I get to finally lay my hands on this game... Not within a year now but within 2-3 thanks.

Also while i am responding to you, I was a little unimpressed with the real time battle system, but, and this is a big but, not enough for that to be a draw away from the game, it wasn't implemented extremely well but it has potential and i wouldn't mind at least seeing what they do with it I mean they have to listen to at least some feedback, why else would there be so many extensions of FFVII (god i hope there are no hardcore FF fanboys (or girls) reading this)

Alright so fanboys (if you are here) get ready to flame me for this, but final fantasy at least in my opinion started to go downhill after 6, i will never ever understand the hype that game gets, yes at the time it was groundbreaking, but when i am looking for a FF game to play it will always be 1 or 2 or well really any before 7. 12 also wasn't bad but it really could have benefited from a more strict class system, the customization was nice but i found that it kinda took something away from it, then again some people probably obviously have a different opinion.

I own a Wii and a 360. I anticipate owning a PS3 soon enough. Waiting for that price drop, ya know? I'm almost never on Live, but I like the marketplace and I'm lookin' forward to checking out the NetFlix thing. The Wii is a blast, and makes for an excellent "party" box. Wii + alcohol + college kids = fun evening. I'm looking forward to building a Blu-Ray library for my future PS3.

I don't get why people get so worked up about this sort of thing. It seems like a LOT of people who post here own at least two, if not all three of the latest generation consoles. The three all have their pros and cons. The Wii has a remarkable ability to draw in new players outside of the typical 18-30-year-old boy. The 360 has done well where games are concerned. At my job, we sell and rent more 360 titles than any other console. The PS3 won the high-def format war, and remains one of the best (and cheapest) Blu-Ray players on the market today. And it plays a few games, to boot!

The gaming market can easily support these heavyweights. It's kinda funny how the currents of the market can cause such dissent on these tiny, insignificant boards. How many hundreds of such boards exist on the internet? Think of all the people butting heads over what console rules and which drools. Think of all the low- to middle-income 18-30-year-old boys sitting at their keyboards, berating their nearly identical counterparts for making the same choice as thousands of other gamers. How many armchair CEOs, who, in reality, will have virtually no impact whatsoever on the life and times of Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. People are gonna buy the consoles. You guys getting so angry about "fanboys..." Sheesh. We're all fanboys. Big deal. Video-gaming happens to be a hobby we all like. We're idiots.

As a fan of the series, this sickens me. Anyway you look at it the quality of the game just got flushed down the toilet. Unless they plan to put out a 5 disc version on the 360, it is going to be completely disapointing content wise. I love my 360 but this game was supposed to really push the limits of the PS3 and show off what it can do, and now it has been neutered.

Great job Sony! You just lost at least a million console sales and handed MS a million console sales in Japan alone.

Plus they say development for the 360 won't begin until they start the localization process for us english speakers. So either way, game won't be out for another 10 years in the states, with the ps3 version probably dropping first and then the 360 one 10 years afterwards the way square works.

As an owner of a 360 though a long-time Final Fantasy fan [and owner of a PSone and PS2] I can safely say that I don't care...I'll reserve my judgment until the game is out and I've given it a rental before a possible buy. I just can't commit to being excited over FF anymore.

Final Fantasy has a long line of disappointments for me and Enix has just been letting me down in general. I think I'm more excited for FFXIII Versus moreso than XIII itself, but we'll see...we'll see. The hype machine is usually working overtime on any FF release.

Now we just need MGS4 to be ported as well and the sour grapes/foot-eating/whining will be epic. EPIC!

This is great for Xbox owers, but now its going to ruin the game for everyone. Now the developers cant push the graphics to the limit because the game cant be different on either console so now the game will have to be down graded (LIKE GTA for Xbox) because Xbox payed out the ass to get it on there console. So now square enix is obligated to make it for both. So way to go microsoft for ruining a classic title for everyone. Its a fact for anyone that knows about computers, Xbox uses Dual Layer DVDs (8 Gigs) Sony use Blu Ray(up to 50 Gigs) . The same amount of graphical data and etc. will NEVER fit like it would on a blu ray . Now it all has to go according to this shitty Xbox hardware cause it came out so long ago. I mean xbox is a made with extremly cheap parts, just take it apart n look inside.There will never be a game on Xbox in 1080p cause of there Discs. Anyone who says xbox is better OVER a PS3 doesnt have good knowladge of hardware and computers. Rockstar was complaining about Xbox because it was hindering the development of GTA. So they had to basically down grade the game for xbox. The same thing has to happen. Now Final fantasy will prbably be in 720p on both consoles vs 1080p on just ps3 alone. This has to happen. Thanks to microsoft. Of course a development company isnt gonna say no to money, there gonna do it no matter what. So there forced to down grade.GOOD JOB MICROSOFT. And there is definitly no reson to say something like there goes one of PS3s big guns because Final Fantasy isnt coming out for almost 2 years. So there will be so many more games by then and xbox will probably be out of business because of all the returns.

Final Fantasy 13 on the XBox 360 is not a bad thing, I think it's good for the PS3. I think the gamer base for the systems are different. I had a 360 and the only game I played on it was Gears of War, I did not care for anything else on it. I played my PS3 for all other games. Now we're talking about Final Fantasy, the biggest rpg export Japan has. XBox has never been big on RPGs, the player base for those types of games has always been on PS and I don't see that changing. I think sales on the two systems will show where the market is for RPGs--PS3.

I don't see anyone with a PS3 for gaming (versus blu-ray movies) not buying FF13. How many 360 owners, the ones who will not buy a PS3, will buy FF13? I guess we will see, hopefully this year. Microsoft had to put up a lot of money to make this happen, but I think it is good for the PS3.

Where exactly do you get your information from? A major chunk of FF13 is DONE. The 360 version will be a completly different dev project. If anything, they will PORT the PS3 version to the 360 and any downgrades will happen at that time. The PS3 version will be unaffected.

@Lm2nlce: Man you are really really angry over this, I mean put down the controller for 5 minutes and see the rest of life, don't get me wrong video games are great, but there has to be some sort of limit.

And really in the end you have a choice, if you don't like that microsoft has it, if you don't like that it will be slightly bastardized (woo worked that one into a sentence) for the sake of the Xbox, then don't buy it, this is the way it works man not all actions are done to please fanboys (well the FFVII sequels and all of the BS is but meh that is a rare exception) so what if it is in 780 instead of 1080, graphics and definition really aren't everything, I really really wish people would realise that, better graphics don't necessarily make better games, same with special effects in movies, it doesn't matter how good it looks if your story and characters are crap you have a crap game. I for one don't care about hardware, if Square-Enix gives me a good high quality story as they have been, with some great characters as they have been, then i shall be happy, the way it looks is secondary to all of that, it's like a nice added bonus

The rule of thumb is any game in the normal, numbered, series will be an excellent role playing game (number 8 is debatable however), but if it's a spin-off (X-2) or non-numbered game (Mystic Quest) than anything goes - caveat emptor.

@darthbaron: I would, but that being said there is really nothing out for the PS3 that i really want to play that I can't get for the 360. Then again i am also no longer a hardcore gamer of any type anymore nor do i really get excited over game releases anymore, this has actually made me happy, 'cause i am a huge fan of final fantasy albeit they have made a few bad games (anything with FFVII attached to it the first was an OK game but seriously give it up there was and will be better ones (I hope i mean XII wasn't that bad) and while i am bashing previous games X-2 CRAP) and it is nice to know that i won't have to convince a friend or family member who owns a ps3 to allow me to take it for a few months (yes months can't play much anymore) so i can fully enjoy the game, so yes i would definitely buy this.

@Rabid Penguin: I dunno, i kinda stopped paying attention, I was fairly out of it, suffice it to say, the game is lame, and kinda repetitive after a while, it has the most moronic job system of any FF game (at the moment I am labelling Tactics as best but that is just me, and tactics probably could have had more classes) you fight the final boss which is like some doomsday weapon or something, and kinda looks or at least it did to me at the time like some sort of mechanical elephant, but anyways back you fight it in stages which i dunno doesn't really work for me. The premise of the game is moronic it's kinda like wow this guy looks like Tidus i am gonna find him leading you through a pointless series of events and a bunch of Dress Spheres (soooo stupid) to this Vegnagun thing (i think that was the name don't quote me on any of this i was sick and it was like 3 or 4 years ago now) and i don't even remember the ending it was so unimpressive, were i you i would just look up a plot summary, unless you are into scantly clad video game women, because really that seemed to be what the game was about honestly the rest of the stuff seemed thrown together and secondary to that.

Man just talking about that abomination makes me want to like crush a ps2 (I very nearly crushed my brother's when i played that game)

Playing FF X-2 to me felt like i was playing an animated version of some asian game designer's wet dream.
