Brando EKmemory Micro Flash Drive Suprisingly Not Cheapest, Smallest Of Them All
Posted by John Mahoney at 11:45 PM on July 29, 2008
I've been meaning to buy a Super Talent Pico flash drive for a while--they're 8GB, 31mm long (claiming world's smallest) and have a metal loop that looks like it won't break (hopefully) on my keyring. Now Brando is jumping into the ultra-tiny flash game, and surprisingly, the 8GB EKmemory Micro will run you US$55--US$20 more than what the Pico is going for. And the Micro is packing an extra four millimeters to boot. For shame Brando, for shame. [Brando via Pocket Lint]

@strider_mt2k: @godwhacker: ...as will I, when I get home: office content filter doesn't allow web-based apps. because that would be a sign of progressive thinking.
(Yes, I know, security, uncertified apps in the production environment, blah, blah, blah... I want my apps!)

I actually own one of these (got it in Korea), and it's actually pretty nice. I only got the 2GB version (which ran me about 20$), but it's surprisingly sturdy.
One slighty important note, This won't work with anything that has a recessed USB slot, due to how the USB slot slides out of the casing.

I dont see what all the fuss is about. I had a 2gig Sony Microvault about 2 years ago. It was about the same size, but lacked the keyring hole--which turns out to be important because I lost it at a laundry mat. I did manage to wash it about 3 times and it still worked.

What happens when you pull it out of your pocket and drop it into the slot of a coke machine by mistake? Too small, cool, but way too small. Would go nicely with that itty bitty cell phone from Saturday Night Live (Will Farrell)

I have a Pico and I'm not crazy about it. In order to make it so thin they had to do away with the outside metal that usually keeps a flash drive connected to a USB port. To compensate for this they make the connector wider so it won't fall out. The problem is that it only fits in about 70% of USB ports.

I run portable applications from my flash drive.
It allows me to run my own web browser with my own bookmarks, and yes even enjoy games and media also stored on the drive.
All this is done using the Windows XP host machine without modifying it in any way or leaving anything behind.

@Wegmans: well, for students they're nigh indispensable. sharing photos is a pretty big thing. and i shouldn't even have to mention the obvious.

What kind of files do you bring with you, out of curiosity? Like go to a friends house and "borrow" some movies? That's probably what i would use it for

Go with the KingMax 8GB - no problems with fitting USB ports, single piece of plastic, fully waterproof and smaller than a piece of trident gum. Flat enough to keep in my wallet and fast enough to support Vista Readyboost.
Widely available online for less tha $30.

I've seen much smaller, though not necessarily capable of as much storage capacity. Can't remember the brand (think it might have been SanDisk), but I once saw a USB wafer drive. All it was was a single piece of plastic with USB leads on one end. No outer casing, no shroud around the USB end...it's pretty much what you'd get if you stripped away all the non-essential bits from a standard USB drive and left only the flash chip behind. And, if I'm not mistaken, the entire thing could fit on that quarter without hanging over the edges.
@Anomynoose:
The obvious? Would that be homework, porn, or illegal music downloads?
@strider_mt2k:
Without leaving anything behind...except randomly downloaded spyware, that is.

I have the Super Talent Pico you mentioned. I snagged some special edition gold-plated model from Amazon. It's surprisingly sturdy and when the contact side is faced away, looks like a small slab of gold. Upload speeds are average to a little slow, particularly for large files, but download speeds from it have been very fast. I've not tried running any programs off it.
I haven't worked up the courage to engrave anything on it, but it's pretty enough that you could do so and wear it as jewelery.
