Beijing's Apple Store Gets Crashed By Windows XP
Posted by Jason Chen at 8:00 AM on July 23, 2008
We literally have no further information other than what you see in the image above, but either way, it's a very interesting photo even if it might be a fake. It makes sense that whatever huge display is running off a Windows XP machine—many giant displays do. What's also interesting in the photo are the cops (are they cops?) manning the line with fire extinguishers in case one of the Beijingnese Apple customers gets outta line. [Thanks Chris!]
In comparison, there's a WSJ shot of the same angle, but this time with an iPod+iTunes ad banner running. Could be that the XP shot is when the thing's in sleep mode?

Is so far as usability/capability there is no edge for either OS anymore, everything can be done just as easily (except writing to NTFS) on either system...

@KRingg: Great points. Apple still has the edge though. Especially when Pixar owned by Jobs is a majority shareholder in Disney that runs ABC, ESPN Miramax, Touchstone, etc etc.
The Brooks institute of Photography, one of the premier photography schools in the country..,and an up and coming film school, uses exclusively Macs.

@atuck: There's pixelation around both the Apple logo and the XP logo. They're both real. It's not too hard to believe that the screen is using Windows to display things.
I remember one place had a giant monitor running and it BSOD'd so there was a HUGE monitor showing MS's failure.

Considering Apple has an app called Quartz Composer Visualizer — which is specfically designed for displaying motion graphics across multiple large displays — i really can't understand why they would use Windows for this.
Then again, they use Windows Mobile on the little handheld units they use to check people out remotely... get these people an iPhone Point-of-Sale app, and a card reader that plugs into the dock port! Sheesh.

@Chester_Copperpot: While Apple used to be the defecto OS for these things, they're losing that edge very quickly. Seems to me that Apple is trying so hard to remain dominate in the consumer world that they're losing pace in the art world.
Example: The USC Film School (the premier film school in the US) has recently abandoned all of its Mac stations and now edits in Windows/Avid exclusively.
Example: Many major motion pictures, such as The Matrix, are now initially cut using Adobe Premier Pro (in Windows) instead of Final Cut (in OSX). Of course, they all use an Avid rig for the final print.

All Apple computers now have PC hardware inside.
So naturally they use a more flexible and reliable software like XP or Vista.

Actually this is very funny because it shows that Vista has been a huge failure... Every time Microsoft designs a new OS it builds it on the garbage of what has come before. XP is a capable OS, they should just go back to the drawing board and come out with XP2, XP3 etc. They basically try to out "Apple" Apple and it isn't what Microsoft is good at. They don't do slick beautiful products. Look at Zune... need I say more?

You're kidding right? Photoshop will only be 64-bit for Windows Vista when the new version comes out. Pixar just switched from AMD PC's to Intel PC's for their rendering. On top of that, you can do everything on a PC that you can do on a Mac and the industry isn't what it used to be where anyone doing graphic art had to be on a mac. It hasn't been like that in a while. Also, how well does autocad run on OSX? As for music, that's personal preference, since you can get very high end programs for both PC and Mac, and I know a lot of musicians that use PC for their editing, sampling, etc.

Epic failure man! OSX is based heavily on FreeBSD, which is an open-source project out of UC Berkley. UNIX is a closed-source commercial product developed by Bell Labs. While Linux, FreeBSD, and UNIX are all of the same family, they are unique operating systems with entirely differentiated code bases.
Saying OSX is UNIX is utter BS, especially in the context of market share. Nice try though.

actually if they were the cops and not security you might be a bit better off. want a little inside information from one of them or get passed those velvet ropes? slip em a few yuan...those guys can be corrupt as hell. If they are staff security though, aka private security...then it could nay impossible.
as for the picture itself...i'm not as blown away as you are giz. you go into the OSX, Linux, and MS world, and you will find plenty of examples in which each side uses the other sides products. I attended the 10 am opening on Saturday in Sanlitun. The screen is rather large but is flawed with the 3 different splits. Also, to note that they are not police, rather they are just security personal. They are more there to direct traffic rather then pose as a deterrent. Actually, I was just at the store the other day, the store is only the two floors below the Apple logo. The building running XP for the display is another part of the mall. I'm guessing Apple must have rented the display space from the mall during the grand opening the other day.

The display most likely runs on Windows Embedded [www.microsoft.com]
