AT&T's Free Wi-Fi Hotspots for iPhones Now Online for Real
Posted by Kit Eaton at 6:02 PM on July 18, 2008
It's been a saga of the on again, off again, on again, off again type, but it looks like AT&T's free Wi-Fi hotspot access is live at last. 17,000 sites across the US are available to iPhone users, including the fabled Starbucks sites. According to AT&T's website, which also offers a hotspot locator tool, AT&T knows "Wi-Fi is hot, and free Wi-Fi even hotter, which is why we are proud to offer iPhone customers free access to the nation's largest Wi-Fi hotspot network." Interesting... after all the shenanigans, it looks more like AT&T thinks Wi-Fi is just "lukewarm", or maybe "tepid." But at least it's finally come good. UPDATE: Well it looks like Wi-Fi isn't here quite yet. AT&T posted the info by accident and made a fail. [AT&T via MacRumors]

Now, it's time to see if they patched the Safari hole.
Probably. :( So, here's to hoping.

I love my iPhone and my girlfriend works at Starbucks, but damned if I'll hang out there...

@itchytooth: The only people who should consider Starbucks their "primary place of business" are people who work at Starbucks.
And I know all about the massive problems of the homeless and impoverished and how they have $500 for an iPhone and $110 a month for service but still can't pay the rent.
If I was willing to pay the $1, I'd play a Tiny Violin for you.

@OMG! Ponies!: I sure this will be hard for you, Rich Guy, but try to consider, for a second, the needs of us homeless, unemployed iPhone users. Thanks.

Great. Now, for those 3 seconds a day I find myself in Buttf*cks (as Paulie Gaultieri calls it), I have free wifi.
Sorry, but my hangout of choice is still my jobsite. I get paid $60 an hour for my ass to be there.

@DelSource: I'm shocked - SHOCKED! - that you would ever use the word "antitrust" when speaking about AT&T.

That's out of order, offering wi-fi at thousands of busy places to iPhones only and not any other device. Antitrust suit?

@itchytooth: It's a Family Guy joke.
It's about as close to true Simpsons-style satire as McFarland got.

Starbucks has just officially become the place to show off your IPhone. Unless you have the old IPhone, then you won't want to risk pulling yours out next to someone with a 3G in white, that would just be embarrassing.

@OMG! Ponies!: You're right. There are much nicer coffee shops to hang out at, which don't charge for wifi in the first place and serve coffee that's actually good. However, I have ended up spending plenty of time in Starbucks, for lack of a better place in some areas, on long bicycle trips.

@sleze69: Are you serious? Because if you are, and you're running XP, you can go to ThemeXP.org. I haven't used it in years (because I've come to like the XP UI) but you can skin your desktop there.
(Make sure you go to ThemeXP.org not .com)

Why would you need free wifi for your iphone when you have an unlimited data connection?

Great, now that we have 3G and don't need the WiFi they decide to release it. What will they think of next? -insert anything redundant you can think of-

Yikes, the trolls are definitely in full effect this wonderful Friday morning...
I just popped into a SBUX this morning and tried to give the Wi-Fi a shot, but I couldn't get a connection without hitting a webpage requesting that I pay up... anyone know where people need to go to log in for the free access?

I just hope the free wi-fi is automatic and doesn't require logging in via Safari, etc. Because that's just useless. Meaning, if I'm in Starbucks and join the network and then have to login, every future visit will automatically switch me to Wi-Fi and I won't receive jack because I'm not logged in. Annoying.
And as for hanging out at Starbucks, etc., doesn't matter to us NYC folks as there's so many of them, walking several blocks means almost continue Wi-Fi coverage.

@0150r: In theory you get faster data transfer. Unfortunately my experience with Starbucks Wi-Fi (old T-Mobile or new AT&T) is that they are slower then data transfer over a dial-up connection. Unsure why, but where I am it is like this if Starbucks is busy or not. Maybe there are a lot of leachers around all of our Starbucks.

Well they seemed to take it away again, the ATT link above is now a 404. When you connected to the ATTwifi ssid from this Starbucks (Domain, Austin) you get the regular log in screen asking for username/password. I can get on with the account I have with the starbucks card, but no special iPhone treatment like the last time this slipped out and you only needed to enter your phone number.

This is important because multimedia streams much better that the video quality is much much better over wifi than 3g, don't believe try looking at youtube video over 3g then look at the same video over wifi, nite and day!!!

Obviously, you've never experienced the vast amount of bandwidth afforded by AT&T on their EDGE/3G network. And by vast amount, I mean it really sucks. Free wi-fi is welcome where I can get it on my iPhone. I live in Atlanta, former home of Cingular Wireless, and specifically less than a mile from a AT&T Experience store and my 3G signal is utter crap. They have a lot of work left to do to make 3G viable here in the States.

While I think this is a neat addition, and haven't yet used it, it is hopefully a widely known fact that any customer of AT&T's automatically has free wifi at hotspots that are run by at&t. I have formerly pacbell DSL and now can logon to hotspots with my old pacbell logon.
