Apple Tells Retailers to Stock Up on Current MacBooks and iPods (Don't Buy One Now)
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 4:20 AM on July 31, 2008
If you needed a bigger hint that new iPods and MacBooks (whatever form they take) are around the corner, AppleInsider is reporting that Apple has "strongly suggested" to its retail channel partners to stock up on at least four weeks worth of their best-selling iPod models, and at least three weeks worth of MacBooks and MacBook Pros.
This indicates they're ramping down production of current models, and gearing up for fresh goods in early to mid-September, though the stretch for new notebooks might be a bit longer. Regardless of the exact timing, save yourself the trouble of kicking your own arse by holding off on buying a new iPod or notebook for the next few weeks, if only to see what's in the pipe. @evangelistc01: I would sell it a few days before the new one comes out. It is a little risky, but a lot of people on Ebay wont know anything about the new one until it is released, giving you a perfect opportunity, I was debating on doing the same with my 17" MBP :)

@jonbaird77: They usually only have 2 options for each ipod out at a time, and when theres 3 it usually means the weakest is about to be obliterated, not replacing it immediately. Since the 32gb just came out in april anyway, I wouldn't count on a 64gb soon; especially not till Flash memory goes down in price again.
@Glaiel-Gamer: that was entirely because of the new iphone data plan, which was widely advertised as costing you MORE than the old plan, thus bursting the bubbles of hopeful adopters. I'd expect your MBP to sell for whatever it's worth now on ebay, minus perhaps a little bit of dough.

> "Apple has "strongly suggested" to its retail channel partners to stock up..."
And where do Apple's "retail channel partners" get their stock from? From Apple!
If stores get their products from Apple, isn't it up to Apple to deliver more MacBooks and MBP? Or by "stock up" they mean that stores need to slow down on how many they sell, to stretch out the supply?

Here's my Apple buying strategy:
If you need a computer and feel like buying a Mac, buy one now. Don't wait for what you hope will come out. Apple is always up-ing processors and RAM and the chances are, you're not a power-user anyway. Whatever MacBook is out there is just fine for browsing the internet, running iTunes, and checking email.
If you don't need a computer right now and want a Mac, wait until after the next big conference. You'll get slightly more bang for the buck.
Never buy the AppleCare warranty. It's $300 and any repair you need will be quoted at around $200. If it's really that bad, I have strategies for getting repair fees waived.
Don't buy new RAM or a hard drive at the store. You can put it in yourself for cheaper. You're not going to fill up your hard drive on the first week. Six months from now, you'll get more storage for less money. Learning to replace stuff in your computer is fun and easy. Spend the 15 minutes to do it yourself.
OMG! Ponies!

@Carmen Sucks: They probably wont be coming out with a successor to the iPod Touch, just one that has more storage. If they do add any cosmetic features though, that would be sweet :D

@NeoXY: Here's the trick:
Explain to Apple how your local small claims court works. For example, in NY, it costs about $50 to start a small claims case. Apple, being a corporation, must appear through counsel. That means legal fees. Opening a case is about three billed hours. Even at $100/hour for a cheap account, just getting the complaint and putting it in the system will run $300.
Then there's the Answer and the Combined Demands. Defense work is a business with slim margins nowadays and you can bet that the firm is bilking Apple by padding the timesheet. Call it another three hours. $600 in legal fees.
Then the conference. We're up to $900 and you haven't done anything but started the case. Nothing has even happened. No discovery. No nothing. Just a conference and the bill is $900.
Explain that you have no problem in letting Apple rack up that kind of bill. Then explain that you're certain that a half-dozen people who have nothing better to do than sit on a jury might feel that a $2500 computer should last more than two years.
When they ask if you'll hold, say "yes". I have never paid a repair fee on any electronic equipment.

Heres my strategy:
Mac Mini: No reason you should buy it, last update was forever ago and the price hasn't discounted (aka: you are paying too much for old technology)
Macbook: If you must have one before college, go ahead and get one, if you think you can survive a few weeks w/o one, the wait will be worth it. PRICE DROPS ARE ALSO RUMORED
Macbook Pro: Just like the Macbook, don't get one if you can survive a few weeks w/o it. I bought mine in June, it sucks a little but I'm not complaining because mine is still amazing. NEW PRODUCT + BETTER TECHNOLOGY + LOWER PRICE = GOOD REASON TO WAIT
iMac: Get one, nothing special happening with it right now. Also get one in place of a Macbook Pro if you DO NOT need the portability, you get so much more for so much less $$$ (and the 24" can really game)
Macbook Air: Dont get one, ever :) (atleast not until it gets more ports and better specs)...its a gimmick as of now
AppleCare Warranty: I would recommend it, $300 (or less of you are a student) for protecting your $3000 investment for 3 years sounds like a good idea to me
RAM installation: If you can install it yourself, do it, you will save yourself about 50% in cost. If you are too busy to do it, if you think it is too risky, or if you trust 'apple-branded' RAM more (yes, I know its not really 'Apple' ram) so ahead and order the Mac with the extra RAM.
Same goes with the harddrive, although the harddrive is a little more difficult to replace than the RAM.

I'd be keeping my 32gb one regardless; the storage is about right and with the 2.0 firmware it does just about everything I need it to do.
Now, if they came out with a 32gb iPhone, then I'd have to think about it. Not likely till next year though.

WRONG. AppleCare was THE BEST purchase I ever made from Apple.
I had a lemon MPB 2.4 that overheated to the point where it warped the bottom casing - twice. After having it repaired for free (twice), one of the fans crapped out and the overheating started again.
Guess what - Apple sent me a brand new 2.5ghz penryn with upgraded HD, LED backlit screen and 256mb more video memory - FOR FREE. I tell you - Applecare techs where the most pleasing techs I have ever dealt with in my life (and I have dealt with many, having owned my own computer business myself).

@shaneschofield:
GPS wont work. Mobile gps units need to have some sort of software to communicate with a database of maps. Garmins, Magellans and the like all have built in memory and software to communicate with pre-installed maps that satellites use to plot a position against. Until a company makes such a software to run on the Touch or iPhone, it wont happen. And, while Google's software can interpret a location based on a saved map, its a map that is streamed from an 3g or wifi connection.
I have the same problem with my BB Curve. If only a company developed a software to communicate with maps saved on a mini-sd card, I'd be set with my SIRF Star III.

@Acemonster: I never said that I was quoted $200 for an AppleCare repair. I don't buy extended warranties. AppleCare is an extended warranty. Try reading what is written before you get angry next time.
I threaten litigation against manufacturers when their products fail. For example, when my XBox 360 died, even though I was outside of their 1 year warranty period. I explained to Microsoft that they had already issued a statement admitting that the defect was a manufacturing defect and that they don't want to take a verdict. They waived the repair fee.
When my MacBook's hard drive died three weeks after the one year warranty expired, I called for repair service, which they quoted me at $175. I explained to them that a jury in Brooklyn might think that a $1400 computer should last more than a year and that they don't want to take a verdict. They waived the repair fee.
As to your question: Why would a person not insure a $3000 purchase at just 10% of the cost?
Even if I had bought a $3000 Mac Pro, I would still not buy the AppleCare warranty. First of all, many credit cards confer their own warranty protection which, at the very least, doubles the initial period. AppleCare is a 3 year warranty. My credit card gives me an extra year on top of the first year. And I haven't paid anything extra.
Secondly, the "but my computer cost $3000 so I care all the more to insure it" argument holds no weight. I sue people for a living and I know juries in Brooklyn. Guess what - a jury in Brooklyn probably thinks that a $3000 computer should last more than 2 years. At least the chances are good enough that Apple does not want to risk it.
What's Apple going to do? Get up in open court and say under oath that it doesn't know how to build a computer that lasts more than 2 years? I don't think that Apple wants to do that.
The first rule of products liability: No manufacturer wants to take a verdict because if the jury rules that the product is defective, the manufacturer is estopped from re-litigating the point in future cases. Don't believe me? Ask Merck how much it enjoying taking an adverse verdict.
There is nothing immoral about threatening litigation. Companies threaten each other with litigation all the time when they feel that they are within their legal rights. It's not frivolous and threatening a lawsuit does not clog up the court system. Even Apple threatens people when it thinks it has been wronged - in the form of C&D letters. Apple has even sued individuals who, Apple believed, wronged Apple. Threatening litigation is a valid negotiation tactic.
And it has worked for me time and again. I don't by extended warranties - and that goes for AppleCare protection - and I have never paid for a repair to electronics.
And in case you missed what I said at the beginning, I'll say it again.

@Acemonster: Then you got taken for $300.
You state that you bought a "lemon" (your word, not mine) computer that overheated to the point that it warped the case. If it's hot enough to warp metal, it's hot enough to burn flesh. That sounds like a defectively designed and/or manufactured computer. And if I was Apple, I wouldn't want that kind of computer in the wild.
You paid $300 for an extended warranty meaning that you paid about $150 per repair that should have both been free in the first place.
Your case illustrates the point perfectly: Why should you pay extra to have a company fix its own defect? A computer that overheats without any modifications having been made to it should not be subject to a repair fee ever. The problem was caused by the designer and/or manufacturer, not by the consumer.
Further, your lemon presented a risk to Apple. The overheat adds a whole new claim to a potential case: failure to adequately warn.
Remember the guy who claimed that his MBP burned his genitals? Overheating computers make legal departments wonder how much warning to provide against using a laptop computer in one's lap. If you don't provide enough, a negligent failure to warn claim may lie. Further, given the prevalence of the term "laptop computer", can any warning be sufficient? The deck is stacked against a computer manufacturer on the warning claim.
In essence, Apple shelled out a little extra to keep you happy. There's nothing wrong with that either. It was a calculated business decision that kept you from doing things like posting about your "lemon" computer or, worse, suing.

Not everyone's a lawyer, not everyone knows the intricacies of small claims courts just off the top of their head, and for anyone whose profession isn't litigation it would probably not be worth it to learn. Second ... Congratulations. I'm sure you enjoy your profession. I admit that I am merely a student of law and not a lawyer (yet). Regardless, while it is not immoral to threaten legal action at a company, throwing out the possibility that something can be done legally because a part failed outside of the warranty period classifies you as, in layman's terms, a DICK.
I agree that a computer of that price and caliber should last more than two years. But because a person neglects to buy the extended warranty (Perhaps Apple's way of telling consumers not to rely on a simple one year warranty), it does not mean he/she should threaten legal action to get what he/she wants because people believe equipment should last longer.
No. Ideally, companies like Apple, Western Digital and IBM should band together to set a higher industry for standard for equipment use. Realistically, organizations like the BBB, and other regulatory and consumer oversight committees should see to it that the consumer is protected (to some extent)on large-ticket purchases.
Apple classifies their laptops as "notebooks," thus avoiding such confusion. Call Apple and any tech will say to you that it should not be used on the lap and that because it is classified as a notebook, it should be used on a desk or pad.

You guys know you can get MacBoook Pro Apple Care from authorized resellers over there for only $205 buy it now?
I was about to get it because I just bought a MBP on Ebay. When it arrived I noticed it had somebody elses user info on it. I emailed the guy and sure enough, it had been stolen from his house. Now I am dealing with the police instead of enjoying my new MBP. I guess I will have to wait for the new one to see if I want to get it or not. I may just want to stick with the current design. It is hard to beat this one. So simple and the keyboard is great.
